(Natasha Tracy)
Abuelita, no soy bipolar

"Bipolar disorder can be a great teacher. It's challenging but it can make you be able to do almost anything in your life."
(Carrie Fisher, actress)
Grandma's Weekly Column
Welcome to the column "Help, Grandma!"; a small space where you can participate by bringing your stories and anecdotes about your children and adolescents.
This week we will talk about bipolar disorder in children and adolescents. Some tips and advice from specialists.
"People expect me to deny my bipolar disorder, my experiences with it and its effects to make them feel better."
(Natasha Tracy)
Abuelita, I am not bipolar
Bipolarity affects family relationships, work and the entire environment. Perhaps many do not give it the importance it has. However, this disorder can become serious if it is not treated in time. It is extremely important if any symptom or characteristic of this syndrome is detected in any of the members of the family, to inform the parents so that they seek help and contact the specialist, since this type of syndrome must be attacked at an early age, because it is more manageable and children tend to cooperate more with the therapist, as time goes by it is more difficult to treat the patient.
This syndrome in children is usually masked with tantrums, anger, tears and aggression. In adolescence these mood changes are more evident; they range from discouragement to exaltation of joy. They may tend to be introverted as well as extroverted. A crisis can trigger a very difficult situation up to suicide. Mood swings and how they react to certain circumstances is a visible symptom of this syndrome. Be very attentive to your adolescent children, it is preferable that they call us annoying and thus avoid many future problems.
Parents learn to listen, see and read the signs, communication will help your children to tell you their problems and what is happening to them. Continually attend school to talk to teachers about their behavior in the classroom and with their classmates. Any change in their routine is a warning sign and is cause for concern. It is necessary to have a lot of patience, since bipolar disorder requires family therapies and above all it is necessary to support and understand them. The task is difficult but not impossible, we must be very calm and understanding.
In the web page www.healthychildren.org, a very interesting article is published on this subject, it is called: "Bipolar disorder in children and adolescents", I invite you to review it, here you will find relevant information about this disorder and its symptoms.
Friends of #Motherhood get to work for the benefit of your children and their future. Only with love and understanding will the emotional balance of children and adolescents be achieved in order to minimize the behavioral alterations caused by this syndrome. If it is necessary for the family to attend therapies to help them cope with this syndrome, it would be ideal, since family support is vital. Remember that the imbalance can lead them to end the lives of their children. People suffering from this condition must feel loved, understood and accepted in order to help them cope with this pathology.

The psychopedagogue María José Roldán published an article in the web page www.guiainfantil.com, titled: "Bipolar disorder in childhood", there are some symptoms that parents can observe because they are very evident. Here is the link to review the article:
According to specialists, parents should have a lot of understanding and communication so that they can express themselves and say everything they feel. The important thing is that they can relieve all the emotional tension that leads to extreme emotions. Here are some tips:
Give them lots of love.
Pay attention if your child sleeps his normal hours, eight hours a day.
Attend psychological therapies with your child.
Adolescents with this syndrome should take their medications continuously and on time.
"I've had many dark nights, of course, but to give in to depression would be a betrayal, a defeat."

challenges
Many times, the day to day, work and stress surrounds us and leaves us exhausted; however, we must find a space to care for and support our children, since money is not enough. The love and understanding of the family is the only thing that can help to avoid a fatal outcome, because bipolar syndrome to date has no cure, medications and therapies are palliative to avoid crises.
Thank you for visiting the Column Help, grandma!, until next week. I love you all.
