From Coffee To Classic : The Book I Got For Christmas

avatar

What could be a better way to spend the holidays? For me, one of the best ways is when I can spend it with books and hot chocolate. That’s why, this Christmas, I got myself a couple of books and magazines. These books are not even on my wishlist. I just got them because I wanted to read something novel, something surprising and from an author I have never read. But also, I want to study how authors on NatGeo write their columns and articles so that I can be a better writer, especially a travel writer. So, here are some of the books that I got that I have not searched online for recommendation nor even recommended by anyone. It was like going on a blind date that I don’t know what to expect.

The first book I got is The Home Barista by Simone Egger & Rubby Ashby OR. I found this book when I asked about the coffee section at the bookstore. There were some books that I really wanted but it was too expensive for my wallet. Since It doesn’t have the price tag, I wondered how expensive it would be but apparently, it was on discount. I have skimmed a few pages and it’s perfect for those who are into coffee and want to know some basic information about the world of coffee.

The second one is called Filthy Rich by James Patterson and John Connolly with Tim Malloy. This one is quite a spicy book with the topic that was all over the media one time. The topic is about Jeffrey Epstein and the scandal he was in. I haven’t skimmed in and didn’t even know what I am in for. It could be very interesting or boring.

The third book that I got is Zero to One from Peter Thiel. It's practical and full of advice from one of the most famous people in VC and also in startups. I admire him as an entrepreneur, so I have a good feeling about this one.

The fourth one I got is 365 days from Blanka Lipinska,a female polish author. This book was already made into a movie with the same title that I already watched. At first, I did not expect that there would be a book about it. The premise is about an Italian mafia and a polish girl with a lot of steamy actions going on. So, I wonder if the book is going to be the same as in the movie.

The fifth book is called The Forbidden Door by Dean Koontz. This book is something new and so is the author. From the back cover, this book sounded like a thriller and a conspiracy fiction. So, we’ll find out and I’ll be writing a review once I finish it.

The sixth book is Brave New World from Aldous Huxley. This one is a classic that one I got to read a few years ago. This book is interesting and from what I skimmed, it has a george orwell vibe in the book. Imagine a world where people are made from some sort of artificial process instead conceived in a natural way. The people are also divided into alpha gamma and so on. I am happy that I could finally afford this book which was around 9.99 GBP.

The final one is some magazines from Nat Geo and Conde Nast. I wanted to learn how to write better travel stories, and how to craft a better narrative about a place and even the layout. So, I got some of the old edition of it that was also on sale. I have been studying it and I hope it will reflect in my writing soon. I also have a dream that one day, I could submit one of my works to NatGeo.

These books are the gifts that I got by myself for this Christmas. I intend to finish these before the new year and I hope I can do it! So by then, I can write some reviews about these books and finished the review by the end of January.

Have you read any of these?

Hey, these self-gifts are really cool! I like the way you pamper yourself, being mindful of your goals at the same time. Kudos to you!

Merry Christmas, girl <3

haha yeah! I think we all should pamper ourselves more often. I like to give myself something that can be useful for my goals. I am so curious with that filthy rich book :D btw, what did you get for Christmas?

Well... I usually get what I need throughout the year. This holidays season always comes with exaggerated pricing, at least in my country. I did gift myself a nice dinner with the family, after many years without meeting each other for Christmas Eve. Also, I had some presents for my youngest brothers, and it was gift enough to see their faces lit up with emotion. I have a few things on my list to pamper myself with when the NYE madness ends and prices go back to "normal" here haha

Oooh that sweet of you! strangely, these days prices are the same and in fact more discounts than ever. So, that's why, I tend to buy books during these days. Happy Holidays to you!

That's a different way to enjoy the holiday @macchiata. I agree that nothing could be better than sitting at a corner of a quiet cafe, reading our favorite books and having our favorite drinks. I also like to spend time for myself, but I normally go far away from the city because the cafe in Vietnam is often quite noisy, especially in holidays.

I bet it's noisy during the holidays just as much as it's noisy over here too. I just happen to find a good spot to spend my day reading the books. How did you spend the holidays and the Christmas?

That's why I chose to go out to enjoy the nature. This is kind of rainy season in my place, so waterfalls are more beautiful. And yeah you were lucky to find that quiet spot. Wish you a happy Christmas and New Year!

Weehoo! That is a lot of reading befoire year end. Kinda like 1 book a day! WEEHOO!
I wish I had the time to spend that much time reading. I used to do years and years ago. These days I seem to spend my time handling all sort of choirs around the house when office work is not that stressful and demanding (ie when I can enjoy some free time). Coming days is such period for me. Inspired by your attempt to read 6 books in coming week, I'm gonna try to read at least a part of a book. Hopefully I manage.

Brave New World: Maybe I shall read the book. I saw the movie and must admit: I had to Google (well Presearch) to get some memories about what I've watched. Was primarily the title that I remembered. Fortunately IMDB learned me that my memories wasn't that bad. With a rating below 6 out of 10, its kinda logical I try and not remember that movie {LOL}

Peter Thiel: A great book... Well, I found the audiobook some time ago and listened to at least the first half. I think I fell asleep when listening it. Not that it is boring, but when listening the book while sofa surfing my chill coach, with all the lights in my living room dimmed, it's not that unlogical to gradually slide into dreamland {LOL}

The Peter Thiel audiobook: https://ecency.com/post/@edje/re-samgiset-jagtd {laughing: still need to finish the book}

Hopefully, you can manage! I read the comment on the prev article, there's something about china and the us differences, so that should be interesting. And maybe, it's time for you to get the paperback? I find online version and audiobook is hard to follow through as I like to jolt down ideas and what I learned from it.

Also, the beginning of brave new world was kinda okay to me. At the moment, I am currently reading the 365 cause it's way easier to read than the other ones I got. I hope you have a nice holiday!

To be honest: not sure of the china and usa thing got mentioned by Peter Thiel, was too long ago. This comparison in that comment may just come from my own grey cells. Read and tho shall discover 😆 Started to do something similar recent years... Whenever I read a book that really requires my attention, I read one or two other books in parallel that are much easier to read. Never done that before, always read one book at a time. But it seems I select more and more difficult books to read. I guess I try to stimulate my grey cells a bit more than life does. 😂 NJOY the reads!
