Caricuao: cuatro postales, tres retratos

Caricuao: four postcards, three portraits

  • English version

He was waiting calmly on a bench on the boulevard of Caricuao, very close to the Metro station and right next to the bust of Andrés Eloy Blanco, a tribute "to the poet of the people", when with a hurried gait, almost running, Freddys Hurtado appeared.

foto072.jpg

In his face you can see the passing of the years, 62 to be exact, because since he has lived in Caricuao, 1959, long before the modern buildings, he has dedicated himself to work for the community and especially to preserve the natural features of the parish. And that gives pleasure, but it is also exhausting.

Caricuao is one of the youngest localities of the city, but its seat is a territory populated since the 19th century. It was founded as a parish on April 8, 1975 and since 1898 one of the oldest haciendas in Caracas, La Hacienda Caricuao, which produced coffee, sugar cane, tobacco and indigo, had been operating there; part of those plantations are preserved in some areas of the parish: "Caricuao has been full of stories, so many legends and so many historical facts," says Freddys Hurtado, currently the chronicler of the parish.

Freddys Hurtado is a historian, anthropologist, professor and researcher of the local and cultural history of different parishes of Caracas such as Macarao, Antímano and La Vega. He is president of the Grupo de Investigaciones Históricas, Ecológicas y Ambientalistas Macarao, which has been working for forty years in the research of local history.

The people of Caricua in general live a quiet life, some work in the same area, either dedicated to the community, in the service of the public sector in the educational centers or in the small or medium companies that are in the parish, towards the industrial zone of Ruiz Pineda. But most of the economically active population gets up very early to leave for their jobs or homes of studies long before Caracas wakes up, with the first car leaving from the Zoológico station or in their own vehicles that are part of the great morning queue on the Francisco Fajardo highway heading downtown or east.

Young people spend most of their time in recreational activities within the same area. Caricuao is an exporting community of artists and athletes. Oscar de León took his first steps in the UD-1 sector in the radio station Festival 66 and Cesar Monge, from Dimensión Latina, started his career here. The group Cumbre, dedicated to research and cultural work in the parish, and the dance group Travesuras have also been working here for 24 years.

In sports, from his native parish, Franklin Gutiérrez, center fielder for the Seattle Mariners and the Leones del Caracas, left for the north. "We cannot forget 'El Sabanero Porteño', Ismael Ochoa," says Hurtado, who for more than 80 years has been dedicated to folk music.

Being a lover of nature and the environment, Hurtado preferred to take a walk through the Caricuao Zoo, and there he made his first confession: he detests the hawkers who sell music CDs:

-They pollute the natural environment of the area.

The informal merchants are located in a large part of the boulevard, near the Caricuao Metro station. This is one of the busiest areas. In addition to the music, records and horns, there are also a lot of junk food vendors, who produce an enormous amount of waste that ends up thrown on the walkway.
This zoological park was inaugurated on July 31, 1967 and is located in the old Hacienda Cafetalera Santa Cruz, once owned by, guess who? Cacique Caricuao himself. Some coffee plantations and fruit trees such as mango, guanabana, orange, poma rosa and lemon are still preserved in the place.

-Sometimes the conditions of the Zoo are worrying, it has deficiencies and with all the fried food that has been set up, the natural spaces and food sanitation cannot be preserved, who controls this," says Freddys as we walk towards the entrance of the park, dodging ice cream vendors, balloon sellers and face painters.

The Zoo is still in stable conditions, but there are some animals that have disappeared over the years. It still needs to develop 594 hectares of the mountainous part, in which it is intended to rescue the green areas, exhibit more animals and contribute, through education, to conserve the natural space.

Freddys Hurtado, through the Caricuao Ecological Parish plan, seeks to rescue the green areas of the area, especially in the Vicente Emilio Sojo Park, which due to poor administrative management has become a garbage and sewage dump, in addition to the logging and burning that has been done for illegal constructions, invasions, which have not only taken over the parks, but also some other sectors not suitable for housing construction.

The Leonardo Ruiz Pineda Park is in the same conditions, and finally there is the Universal Peace Park that has been invaded by insecurity, drug trafficking and "car surgeons".

On a motorcycle she travels all areas of the parish daily, always running from one place to another, so she wears very simple clothes: jacket, blue jeans and t-shirts are the most common, and her head covered with a corduroy beret, unless she has to attend a formal event, as Civil Chief of Caricuao. Her name is Judith González and although she defines herself as a spokesperson for the Parish Government, she has not lived in the parish for that long, but she has been working constantly to make it an organized community for the last 12 years.

-I am working in the Parish Government, which is included in the Caracas Socialist Plan, the idea is that the power is closer to the people, that is to say, the people's power," she says with a smile on her lips and expressive eyes.

Judith González starts her work at 5:30 in the morning and does not know at what time she will return home, the Caricuaenses know who she is and where they can contact her, because she is the person who helps them to solve certain problems, that is why she insists on organizing the community to "solve all situations in an effective way", she says.

She is an educator and because of her vocation, she is concerned about the problems of alcoholism and drug addiction in the area, especially among the youngest, this woman is the community leader: "We must seek strategies to lower the levels, with the training and communication of parents and institutions. We must have initiative and learn to do things well in order to teach and guide the community. Doing the work for pleasure and not for obligation or manipulation".

Ismael Ochoa, better known as "El Sabanero Porteño" in the artistic world and in Caricuao as "El abuelo", was only 35 years old in 1954, when he presented his first dance in Puerto Cabello, Carabobo State, his hometown. He was sitting on a street corner in the city and a group of generals asked him to join them to dance at the party of Mr. Isidro Lama, one of the important ones:

POST caricuao cuatro postales.jpg

-Put your maraquitas on your feet and come along, they told him.
With the nerves warming up his body, he put on the maracas, ready to show what he had learned to dance: "joropo tramao". With the eyes of the spectators on him he danced, and from then on he would travel all over the state of Carabobo, then Caracas, other states of the country and some cities of the world:

-I had no artistic director or manager, this is a thing of my own, spiritually.

This Venezuelan artist was born in Puerto Cabello, a town on the Venezuelan coast, on July 17, 1919. At the age of 14 he moved to the capital to work. Being a boy from a very humble family, he did not have the necessary economic resources to support himself, he did not study more than elementary school, and dedicated his whole life to folk music. He did all kinds of jobs: from street sweeper in the streets of Caracas to cleaner in different companies such as radio stations and car and cookie factories.

Most of the years he has lived in Caracas, he has lived in Caricuao, he arrived in the area in 1931 and rented a house with a Maracucho, whose name he does not remember, until he was able to buy his apartment in the UD-7. In this area everyone knows who the "sabanero porteño" is, but they prefer to call him "El abuelo", for the dedication and affection he has had for the children of the parish, whom he has cured of the evil eye, shingles and strange fevers, with home remedies and prayers to his altar, formed by Jesus, the Divine Child, Saint Barbara Blessed and Saint Michael the Archangel.

In the coming months, the Parish Government of Caricuao will offer him a tribute.

Since it was founded as a parish, Caricuao has been in constant development. A parish government was even formed in March, with its own regulations and laws to organize the community and solve the problems that burden both this area and the city in general. This local government is under the platform of the socialist revolution.

The parish has almost 150,000 inhabitants, located in some 22,000 apartments and 29 neighborhoods, is very quiet and the crime rate is not as high as in other areas of Caracas, although the thugs do their thing stealing cars when least expected.

From the balcony of the Zoológico subway station you can breathe fresh air, on one side you have the mountains that border the parish, and on the other the modern buildings built in the 70's; there is no lack of newspaper vendors' kiosks and street vendors. In the background, the noise of the train cars that brings and takes, morning and night, the citizens who leave for work or return from it, like those who travel to a recent and daily past that does not pass, because it is always present.
