Thinking back to my childhood coffee. A Corn Coffee Story.

Greetings, Hive!

This would be my entry for the contest and a flashback from my childhood coffee memory.

I was born and raised in a simple family (before my mom passed away) in the mountain that cultivates the land for crop and another root crop which includes Corns that serves as a major source of foods for the family.

They are grown all over the few lands from our forefathers that our family owns after. Usually, they are grown by the hills since it is located in the mountain. We can harvest twice a year and sometimes we harvest various crops and sometimes only a few depending on the climate change.

After harvesting they are processed by hand and remove all the kernels from the husk, the kernels were sun-dried and brought to corn miller to produce corn grain so that is why my family find the idea of making coffee out of Corns because of too much corn we have and we were very far also from the market and are not so wealthy to buy coffee very often.

In the market here, you can find corn grains classified by number depending on their sizes.

For my coffee creation, I used corn grains number 16. In this content, I would bring back my childhood memories of enjoying this homemade coffee at an early age.

  • In a pan, I toasted 250 grams of corn grains.

  • toast until you achieve the black colour the blacker colour the more it tastes the coffee stronger.

finish product I just need to cool it down and it's ready to place in a canister.

for me I like it a little lighter taste so I don't toast it very well.

How do I make my coffee

  • for one cup of water, I mix 2 teaspoons of corn coffee.

  • and then I add on a teaspoon of brown sugar.

I don't know but I always want to use brown sugar for my coffee session, it feels like I like my coffee better with it.

  • for the final step I stir it thoroughly and do some squeeze.

for a tip! you can filter the corn particles after but you can let them stay so while drinking coffee it's like eating your food too.

I just remember my early days with my cousins before that when we're having corn coffee we enjoy eating the corn grains and even putting more corn rice and more sugar and it would be our breakfast that day but now I never saw from the family that is still doing it. But it's okay we have to accept the fact that life is very different today from yesterday and the new generation finds it hard to adapt to what we have been through before.

I also admitted to myself that even I merely do this kind of coffee occasionally because of many instant things especially coffees nowadays but I am trying my best just to bring back the feelings and the memories behind it.

Now that I was mature enough, I even challenge myself to bring about this kind of coffee procedure for it's not that it's cheap but I understand how Corn Coffee gives more health benefits than any other famous coffee.

I made my content at my grandfather's place in the mountain I find it very comfortable too because of his place. He was already alone so my aunt who has the good fortune she make our Lolos life more convenient today.

I know only a few are making this type of coffee this day because most people rely on instant coffee already but when I went by the mall the other week I can see this type of coffee is sold there also and I was amazed by it.

I was looking at the process and it seems similar to what we do in Jamaica, but we just call it "parched corn" and eat it as a snack.
I used to make it as a little girl and it was a thorough workout.🤣

Hhehe. We do toasted kernels also for snacks before, we used native corns we toasted it the same procedure just like making popcorn but the difference it doesn't pop like a popcorn.

Did you know that I had a bad experience with toasted corn before? I accidentally put a kernel in my nose while eating, luckily my relatives was able to remove it very quickly. But despite that I find my corn story memorables.

I have heard of corn coffee before. This is also a method used for sellers in indonesia to add the volume to the coffee in the past. I was told this by my mom and at first, I could not really believe it. Now, after having seeing it, I believe corn coffee is real lol
