(DIY CAR) Boot lever Repair

avatar

Hello all my DIY people out there today I'm going to be showing you how I fixed my mother's car boot lever release system.

During last year December one day my mother put on her boot release to open it and heard a big snap the metal cable that detaches from the lever to the boot had broken and we weren't sure where am I done this it is a bit of a mission to dismantle the car seats and pull up the carpeting define this out so we left it for a while now you can just use the key but then recently the key was started to give us some problems when trying to unlock the boot so I figured okay let me see why this happened and see if I can fix it.

So first you need to do was unbolt the front seat and remove it from the car next was pulling up the side plastic panels on the inside to release the carpeting and then I had to detach the boot and petrol cab levers to find out exactly what has happened.

When I did so I found out that this may have happened before if you look in the picture below you will see that there is a clamp on the one end this I believe was done after the chaos at once instead of hundred plays del cable is clamped at 2 half together but after a second snap this would no longer be possible because of the extra links that snapped off now would make the cable that little bit shorter.

so I decided to try out something else instead of trying to reconnect the cable to the lever itself I figured I'll just make my own little pull released cord. First thing I need to do was cut off the 1 and of the cable doing this allow me to have something to attach my pull cord to. How do you can see in the picture below there are four layers to this cable the first is a plastic outer layer second is some metal wires twist around for extra strength to stop the cable from buckling third is a white plastic tubing to contain the 4th which is the cable.

Once I had removed that top piece and opened up the cable I then proceeded to fold over the twisting metal to give the one part a bit extra strength using some insulation tape to hold it all down and make sure no one could hurt themselves on the metal wires.

Next thing I did is find myself a metal terminal that would allow me to put two cords in and clamp it down and hold it nice and tight here are some images of the terminals are used.

The pull cord that that I decide to use was simply a thick cutting cord that is normally used in a weed eater. And so just so I know what hurt themselves are used more insulation tape to go around the weed eater cord and the metal terminal clamp.

Now once I had done this I figured I would just sit through the same hole where the levers are placed and it would be able to be pulled there as before but unfortunately this did not work it kept on catching on the metal frame and not allowing the last two re close so after a bit of time trying to figure out how we could do this I decided it would be much easier to just sit through the back side of the chairs support where there was already a hole in the carpet and bring it along the side of the driver's seat.

And that is how I DIY fixed my mother's boot lever release system I hope this has been in formative and helpful if anyone else needs to do the same in the future.

Thank you very much for 4 taking the time to look through this post and have a lovely day further.
