POSSESSED MOMENTS •//• The Cinematic Charm of 'TALK TO ME’

It has been a while since I watched horror movies, although I have always loved horror movies yet these days I haven’t been intrigued by it. In all sincerity, I find most horror movies, silly _{No offense} but I always find it annoying when someone willingly awakens the horror.

It happens in almost all horror movies, probably a girl saw a haunted house and willingly went inside, what should we call this? Shall we say curiosity? well, that would never be me, hehe. Being bored of storylines like this, I have ignored horror movies for quite a long time. But to be honest, I have watched some horror movies that I love, the storyline was unique, with unpredicted endings and undying suspense.

This week, I decided to watch this horror movie that has hanging around my VLC for a while now. When I saw that this movie was highly rated, it piqued my interest and I decided to see what the movie “Talk To Me” has to offer. Is it really worth the time? How nice and intriguing is this movie? Well, we shall find out.

Teen life can really be funny as they enjoy pleasure even in silly things, things like being possessed by the dead for some second.
Haley and Joss usually host small parties or let’s say gatherings where their friends and some teens would come to enjoy the few seconds of possessions. People around this gathering record the effect of the possession and post it on the internet.

Of course, this possession was not done directly by Hayley or Joss but by an embalmed ancient hand that they have in possession. Although the origin of the hand was not told, it was believed to be the hand of a dead psychic, a medium, or a Satanist, this hand serves as a medium to talk to the dead or lost souls.

We all know that things like this have rules to follow, one needs to be tied tight to a chair, and the rules were; to light the candles to open the door, and blow it out to close it. Handshake the embalmed hand and say ‘Talk to me’, a deceased person will appear to whosoever is holding it and then say ‘I let you in’, the most important rule is one can not go for more than 90 seconds unless the spirits would want to stay.

This movie portrayed Mia, a 17-year-old girl who went to pick up her best friend’s brother, Riley, at night. On their way home they encountered a kangaroo in the middle of the road, which was close to dead, Riley suggested that Mia put it out of its misery but she couldn’t bring herself to do it.

Mia doesn’t really have a good family picture, she has a distant relationship with her dad, Max, and her mother, Rhea, died two years ago by drug overdose, ruled as suicide. So, she mostly comes over to her best friend’s house, Jade which has now become like a family to her.

That night was her mom’s remembrance day and Mia claiming that she wanted to forget about her mom’s death convinced Jade that they should go to the little ‘spirit possession’ gathering that Harley and Joss were holding that night, to check out if it was real or not. Mia and Jade planned to snuck out but Riley insisted on following them.

In Harley’s gathering, Mia volunteered to go first and everyone hailed her, everything was set and Mia was possessed by one of the dead’s spirits, although it came as a shock to her. In her possession she focused on Riley, telling him to ‘run’, things took a little turn as she slightly exceeded 90 seconds.

Mia was so ravished by the feeling she felt that Jade had to invite Harley and Joss to her house so she and her boyfriend, Daniel could participate. After everyone had fun, Riley wanted to participate but Jade insisted saying he was not even up to 15, and Jade angrily left the room while Daniel followed.

Riley pleaded with Mia to let him do at least 60 seconds, but Mia agreed to 50 seconds. Surprisingly, it was Rhea’s spirit that possessed Riley, Mia trying to hear her mom out, stopped them from pulling the hand, in respect of the time limit.

What happens when the time limit has been exceeded? How the Riley battle with the spirits within? What happens when excitement takes a tragic turn? What is the reaction of Jade’s family, can they call Mia their family?

Despite this, Mia tried to reach out to her mom who claimed that she didn’t commit suicide and also offered to help Riley, saying Mia is the only one that can help Riley. But can we trust Rhea? Was Mia able to put Riley out of his misery? Or she couldn’t bring herself to do it? Well, I wouldn’t say for sure.

Overall, I didn't feel any suspense in this movie, nothing really extraordinary to me, well, maybe it is because I am looking for an extraordinary horror movie but It is a nice movie for anyone who loves supernatural, horror, or even mystery. I love the ending part, it is quite unpredictable. If you are looking for a simple horror, you can give the movie a try.
