Techno - Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow

As a 50s baby, I've seen advancements in just about every aspect of life and living.

My grandparents and my parents survived the Great Depression which strangely ended during the Second World War. Many did not survive or recover from it.
Some people rose above those adversities and did amazingly well for themselves.

Light Bulb Moments

Most homes had electricity during the 1920s and with it came many new inventions. There must have been many a light-bulb moment in homes across the globe. I can just imagine the excitement of flicking a switch instead of sitting by candlelight or oil lamps, which were a fire hazard as well!

Stoves - Wood, Coal, Electric and Gas

I remember visiting my Ouma and Oupa and how we enjoyed sitting in their kitchen in winter with the old wood-burning stove warming us up after the long drive there.

Coffee

Coffee-making was quite a ritual and still is for some of us.
My Oupa would stir the coffee beans in an old cast iron pot till it was roasted to perfection, grind it by hand in the coffee grinder, and then brew it on the stove in an old coffee percolator. The aroma coming from those beans roasting and the coffee brewing was divine.

Instant coffee surprisingly has been around since the late 18th century but is more widely used today. Nothing beats the real thing though, so I'd rather opt for a cup of tea or just water if the real thing is not on offer! I have yet to find instant coffee that tastes good!

Coffee machines is big business and they're getting more and more sophisticated, some big coffee stations and compact coffee machines do the job almost equally well.

Those 'must-have' Kitchen Appliances

Kitchen appliances have evolved from those old pressure cookers that sometimes 'exploded,' with their contents 'baptizing' the entire kitchen from top to bottom.
Nowadays some appliances do just about any job in the kitchen. Some people end up buying every new appliance that comes on the market, many which become white elephants.

Energy Crisis

All these appliances become useless without electricity, something that's a huge problem here in my home country with planned outages called load-shedding messing up our plans!

It still amazes me how silent the house becomes during load-shedding with no appliances running.
It feels like my world comes to a standstill without electricity.

Imagine if this were to happen worldwide!
Wind turbines and solar panels are something that was not seen when I was just a little girl, all we saw were the enormous concrete power stations that emit pollutants.

What do I miss the most during power outages?

I was caught off-guard yesterday when there was a large power outage in our area.

My Cell Phone
I will be brutally honest; my cellphone has become my lifeline; bad, I know! It needed charging, as did the power bank, and I had to resist checking my phone every time it beeped or else it would die on me! No watching YouTube videos, or listening to music either, as we are never given time-frames during power failures.
It would have been no problem in the days of the good old telephone, and I would have been absolutely satisfied with reading my book.

WiFi is sorted
My WiFi at least has an inverter, but no good if my phone hasn't been charged!

The stove?
If it's close to mealtimes, I would simply resort to ordering a takeaway meal, but if I'm halfway through cooking, it would be a big irritation. I haven't invested in a gas stove yet, would love to have an old wood-burning stove like my Oupa; they're still around, but it's impossible in my small kitchen!

Size does and doesn't count!

The Television
Televisions started its life as a bulky electronic device with a small screen, and it was an amazing invention! They became bigger and bigger to the point where one almost feels like you're in a cinema!

Mini PC
The best invention that still amazes me is my mini-PC, which looks more like a cube, measuring 8,5cm square x 4cm high.
My desk is not that big, and my old computer took up quite a bit of space with my large screen filling half the desk.
I'm very impressed with this little baby's performance! The only downside is that it also needs electricity to power up, unlike a laptop that will at least keep going for a couple of hours without electricity.

20231110_075102.jpg

The Cell Phone
Funny how cell phones started off as large bricks with aerials, then became smaller flip-phones, and then slimmer but slightly bigger again.
My friend @ericvancewalton spoke of The Beginning of the End of the Mobile Phone?
The Humane.AI Pin has no screen and only interact via voice commands, whereas the Rabbit-R1 has a small touch-screen but also operates via voice commands, mind-blowing for me.
I love clutching my phone after all, so cannot see myself evolving to any of these, but who knows?

When you become a little more silvery on top, it's not so easy to adapt, but a couple of years down the line, we wonder how we managed without all these new gadgets

I cannot imagine the shock, and wonder if our great-grandparents could step into the present, it would be a whole strange new world for them!

Just passed by to give you a hug and tell you how much I love stoves. I've seen clay stoves in Europe and I was amazed of how well they keep the heat over night.

And a hug right back to you @zpek! If I lived in a cold country, I would certainly consider something like that for my kitchen.

Look at you Lizzie!
You are the first person I know who has a miniPC!

What do you think of it?
Personally speaking I love tech and think keeping up with the youngsters helps keep us young at heart!

Hi Ed, that's my son's work!
He bought it in the Netherlands, set up a family dropbox so all my files are there, my passwords are stored in 1password, and added all the programs I use so it was ready for me when I arrived there. Made life so much easier when I was there; laptops just add to one's luggage weight,

It's amazing, no lagging like my laptop, and does everything I need to do! It has 16GB RAM and 512GB ROM, whatever that means, but as I mentioned, all my files are stored in dropbox;) I really cannot see any difference in the performance between the mini-pc and my bulky pc!

I can also simply pop it into my bag when visiting them next time, and of course easily hide it in the nether depths when no one is home all day.
Unfortunately, that's how we have to live in crime-ridden SA where TVs, laptops and PC's are top of the 'shopping list!'

My son bought himself a more powerful one, but I don't think he uses it for gaming; he's a die-hard Warcraft gamer!

I'm often afraid of new technology (like CAD way back when!), but it is exciting when I see how much more one can do. Technology evolves at an amazing pace!

First I want to know how he is recovering. Very interesting post. We are the generation of change but we have also been adapting. Here where I live power outages are very frequent. They are a real nuisance. For everything. I have even had to light up with my cell phone. So what to do? Thanks for sharing. Take care of yourself. ❤️🥰

Hi @mamani, I'm feeling a whole lot better, am driving again so am freer to get around.
You are so right, we have seen so many changes in the world, and I feel so privileged to be a part of that.
So you also know all about those power outages, it brings everything to a standstill. It's especially bad for the economy as well!
We use rechargeable globes and lamps, as well as solar lights outdoors, but it all comes at a price, so unnecessary.
Thank you for the good wishes, take care of yourself too xxx

That's a cool liddle PC.

A pocket PC! Wonder if it'll run off a small PowerBank?

I visited my aunt thus week and used an airfryer for the first time. If you can believe that

Genius, I tell ya 👀

I'm fascinated and enamored now!

Sending hugs and love, L. I hope you're holding up and getting through okay. ❤️

Thank you Nicky, I'm feeling a ton better, thankfully independent again as I am now driving again!

I must check if it powers up with my powerbank, did not even think of that.

Well, an airfryer is definitely on my wishlist, everyone says how amazing it is and how crispy chicken, chips, and so forth is. I'm sure it would save a load of power vs a big oven!

I loved reading this, except the power outage part though. I was thinking the feeling you have when there's a power outage and everywhere is silent and then thinking of my part of the world where we could have that feeling for days, weeks and even months on end. We're used to that quietness though and relish the moments when power comes back on.

Oh no @jhymi, so I have nothing to complain about, how do you manage?
We always hear talk of the energy crisis, but it's now starting to hit home with power outages worldwide!
Take care and let's hope there's light at the end of the tunnel!

You are very up to date on this stuff! It's funny you mention the power outage. That just happened to us. I was just about to put a pizza into the toaster oven and it sounded like a bomb went off outside! A transformer blew across the street and our power was out for two hours. Those kinds of ordeals really make you aware of how much we rely on electricity. One thing that I always make sure of is we have a couple of power banks charged so we can power up our phones if we need to. They're helpful for travel also.

Oh no, and a pizza just won't be the same if it's left half-baked and cooked later!
You mention a toaster oven, now that sounds interesting, I want one, I also want an airfryer, and I want some of those innovative power banks from Anker!
My brother has a really good solar power system with inverters, they're never without power. It also generates so much electricity that's fed back into the grid. He's an electrical engineer so went for the best system, obviously at a cost, but it's paying dividends.
Energy is becoming a real problem worldwide it seems.
Enjoy your weekend Eric!

It was the worse timing ever! Lol. We love our toaster oven. We have this one and it was the best investment ever.

My dream is to build an off the grid house. I want to be able to charge my car for free by the sun. : ) Thank you, Lizelle! I hope you've enjoyed your weekend.

Now you're talking, an off-the-grid house would be the way to go. Arthur used to love watching the TV program Grand Designs which showcases some innovative homes that blend in with the landscape, many of them off-the-grid, a dream come true for those homeowners!
Thank you for the link, so the toaster oven basically is an air fryer, I did not know they came in this design, have only ever seen ones that as high and bulky, I prefer this design, price wise both designs are about the same!
Thank you for sharing the link Eric.
Have a wonderful week.

Outages suck and it's terrible to have to go through them in this modern world. It is true that we have become so used to technology that sometimes we do not realize that for a couple of hours, we can read a book instead of watching our cell phone, right? Only it should be when we want it and not because of the inefficiency of the government of the day with the services.

I remember when there was a blackout here that lasted a week, the issue of electric stoves was a big problem. Mine is gas, but for example, my sister's is electric and everyone in her building had electric stoves. So they had a very hard time those days.

I like your mini PC. My husband had a Mac mini years ago and I was impressed with what that little box could do.

I hope your recovery is going well.

Happy weekend 🤗

Hi Eli, I'm feeling tons better, can at least get back to doing things and not just vegetating in front of the TV on a recliner, AND I can sit upright at my desk again!

I cannot imagine how one can manage when it's a whole week of no electricity! I have a little camping gas cooker, but when (or shall I say if) I sell my home to move into a smaller home, I will certainly invest in a gas stove, as the energy crisis is here to stay, in my lifetime at least!

When Arthur was still here, we used to end up chatting more, and at times welcome the respite from busyness. It's the weirdest feeling that once the electricity is back, one almost feels like you have to jump up and get back into action. That's how I am at least, a tad OCD as I HAVE to get things done and don't like wasting time, terrible I know!

My son bought the mini PC for me and set it up so I could do my BNB online work from there when I visited them. I am very impressed with it!

Enjoy the rest of your weekend Eli :)
