Holodomor - Hidden Horrors

avatar
(Edited)

The atrocities that the Ukrainian people are currently experiencing, must be bringing back memories of horrors for the older generation of that country, something most of us have not heard of.

We've heard of the genocide of the Jewish people in the Holocaust; a subject covered in-depth by books, countless movies and mini-series, speaking of the horrendous war crimes committed by Nazi Germany.

However, I was appalled to learn about the Holodomore of 1932-1933, where 4 to 7 million people perished due to mass starvation in the grain-growing regions of Ukraine, with half of them being children.
The true figures will never be known as the Soviet authorities forbade recording the actual number of deaths, and further silenced news about the famine. Those who dared speak out about it, such as a journalist and administrators of a 1937 census, which revealed the decimation of the Ukrainian population, were arrested and murdered.

Holodomor is derived from the Ukrainian words for hunger - holod and extermination - mor.

The origins of the famine lay in the decision by Soviet leader Joseph Stalin to collectivize agriculture in 1929. Teams of Communist Party agitators forced peasants to relinquish their land, personal property, and sometimes housing to collective farms, and they deported so-called kulaks—wealthier peasants—as well as any peasants who resisted collectivization altogether. Collectivization led to a drop in production, the disorganization of the rural economy, and food shortages. It also sparked a series of peasant rebellions, including armed uprisings, in some parts of Ukraine.
Source

The first time it was spoken of in the Soviet Union, was in 1986 following the Chernobyl nuclear power plant disaster. Even more shocking is that the Holodomor was only recognized worldwide as a Genocide almost 90 years afterward, in 2019!

Today the Ukrainian people are once again facing horrors, some who were small children during the Holodomor but this time a war that also is causing unspeakable damage and destruction. People are having to flee their homes, leave their belongings behind, and many are separated from their children in order to keep them safe!

What is going to happen to the children who become orphans after this current war?

When will this madness come to an end?

History repeating itself, growing up with neighbours when young who fled Poland just prior WW11 arriving with nothing then slowly building a life here, one learned from young the pain the parents felt leaving loved ones behind.

Ukraine have been through much, wars have never brought about anything but destruction. Thoughts are with aged and young children desperately trying to survive, to young people standing bravely protecting, well done let us hope this ends soon.

I feel for sorry normal Russian folk who also suffer not being allowed to oppose their leaders.

You're so right, some Russian people are also suffering but have been so brainwashed to accept their lot and not say anything, perhaps fear or just ignorance as they only believe what their leaders are saying!
I really feel for people like your neighbours, it must have been awful leaving their family and everything familiar behind. War certainly has no victors!

Many younger Russians online are floundering unable to get their message out with sanctions, many apps or programs simply disappeared overnight, their livelihoods ripped out from under their nose. Western followers turn on them as if they are Putin making decisions.

Savage attack on Ukraine came as a shock, that region appeared to be slowly recovering, one never knows what to expect.

My son gives online English lessons to young Russian children and the school over there who give him the work are no longer able to use paypal.
He's still teaching some of the little ones as it gives him experience working with children who are beginners but he's not charging them now.
It's always the people who suffer, all because of egotistical dictators!

I've been following a young lady who showcases Russia, "Eli from Russia" she presents an exceptionally good view over the 11 time zones with many different cultures across the regions. Most recent on YouTube was interviewing young people in Moscow on how they feel about what is happening.

Yes PayPal and many apps no longer work, one day earning a living next a domino effect throughout the world all in the name of a handful.

I have made contact with the few younger folk I know in Ukraine, safe for now getting their children out of cities, all contracted covid when on the run....

Leaders need to climb out of the past and realize wars were fought to try bring in a better tomorrow, hankering on what was puts the world on a back footing once again.

It's just horrendous what's happening there! That is all we can do and akso pray that the leaders will come to their senses and realize what they're doing to those poor people!

Lately it seems that the dark forces are sowing havoc all over the world my friend.
Even over here we have more hard times than usual.
Only One can change all of this and that's why thousands of prayers go heavenwards from all over.

Unfortunately, Holodomor was the same idea that led to Mao's Great Leap Forward.
The ordinary people suffer and die, time and time again.
We can only hope peace comes to all wars and troubles that are ongoing.

It's just awful that leaders do this to their people in order to enforce their skewed ideals! I cannot imagine what it's like having to abandon one's home and be separated from your children to keep them safe! And the very old as well, what happens to them?

It is appalling and the people are the ones that suffer. Yes having to leave your home, your children the elderly it is sad and horrific.

What is happening is devastating and to think of the horror they are living through in Ukraine is so painful.
It is so frustrating that after so many horrors humanity has lived through, things like this are still happening.:(

That is the sad part Eli, will the leaders ever learn? My heart goes out to the children and the very old especially, as they are vulnerable, just too horrific!

Yes, the elderly and the children, who are so vulnerable in these conflicts, and whose childhood is so abruptly and terrifyingly stolen from them in an instant. :(

I always feel so tearfully sad for Ukraine, the people are getting hammered so badly and relentlessly. But, Silver Hair Lizzie I also feel for the Russian people who do not want this war let want a war mongering dictator in charge of their country. The whole affair is a complete very tragically sad.
If only my magic wand I have sitting on my bookshelf worked. It would be very busy right now.
Love to you 💕

I agree with you Angie! My son was stuck in Russia during Covid lockdown in 2020 and the Russian people were very kind to him. He learned that they've been so conditioned to believe what their leaders are telling them, one example is that they believe Americans are terrorists! The ordinary man in the street there is not wealthy, and this war is going to cause much suffering there as well! Just horrific!

It is sad to see the suffering of the Ukrainian people. I pray that there will be a peaceful settlement soon. Enough damage has been done.

Very sad in deed my friend, our ancestors also had hard times in the Boer War when women and children died in concentration camps put there by the British. It's so sad because the children have to suffer in the end, no one wins in a war.
I pray that peace comes soon for them. I still believe there is more to this war than the eye can see. No one wants war. It's the war mongers that make money out of it. Thanks for sharing such a heart wrenching story. Keep praying for this sick world of ours. Lovely post.

Holodomor was only recognized worldwide as a Genocide

Why was it declared as genocide?

When this insanity would end.....! I think the answer is NEVER. There are always some people in the world who keep on flaming the blazes of hatred, and they destroy the peace.

May God save us all

I didn't grow up with knowledge of it and only learned of it when it was openly spoken about. I was horrified that something like this went on and the world watched. What is happening there is incomprehensible to me. I cannot understand hate that deep, yet, it happens that history repeats and repeats... As a mother, I can understand wanting to push the children to a better place, but, the damage to both sides of the family is deep.

I also feel sorry for many of the Russian people. This is not their doing or want. They are being cut off from the world against their will also.

The brave souls we know that have stayed behind to protect their land... God save them. xo

I totally echo what you say Denise, it is incomprehensible that a human being can do that! And you are right that the Russian people are also suffering; plus they're being brainwashed. My son teaches young Russian children English online, and they now cannot use Paypal as it's blocked by their government. He is giving free lessons at the moment to the ones who are really keen to learn.
It is an awful unthinkable atrocity happening right now again!

PayPal, Western Union, and Money Gram just stopped a few days ago, Visa, Mastercard, and AmEx have all suspended operations.

The cryptocurrency was a sly way of raising money. Coinbase took a stand against Russia, blocking more than 25,000 wallet addresses linked to Russian individuals or parties the cryptocurrency exchange believes are engaging in illicit activity. Coinbase has also shared the wallet addresses with the U.S. government to support sanctions enforcement.

Your son is a true humanitarian. I am glad to know people like him, helping in any way possible.

I am so disappointed in the human race and then again, there are those that completely blow me away with their beautiful hearts.

A friend just sent me a video about this! Ukraine has been used and battered by east against west battles for more than a century.

This is so heartbreaking, evil at its worst! Thank you for sharing @owasco, I just cannot believe that the Ukrainian people are being subjected to a different kind of repression again! When and where will it end?

It will end. It is ending. That's why everything seems so surreal now. We can help by realizing that all of the history we have been told, and are being told now, is false. As long as we believe such lies as "Without Hitler the (one) holocaust wouldn't have happened", and don't realize that that lie has been told us by the true perpetrators (whose identities are, I believe, emerging now), these holocausts or holodomors will not end. It's about facing the horrors we have contributed to, simply by believing in them. We must all begin dreaming up a better world. This one exists in this form only because we believe in it. Oh I could go on and on.
