A Silvery High Five to Hive

(Edited)

While the world stood still and many countries' economic activities came to a near-standstill during Covid lockdowns, the Crypto market remained unaffected and we were still earning Crypto with our blogging.
Further, one year into the pandemic, the Crypto market saw a boom, according to this study.

I still consider myself a Crypto Virgin, even though I've been blogging on the blockchain for almost five years.
Why, you ask?

Well, initially, when my son introduced me to the old blockchain, I joined all starry-eyed as I love writing and sharing good...and sometimes bad...experiences. He told me I could also earn Crypto, and I remember thinking - 'Oh well, that part sounds exciting' - but never gave it another thought!

My son was one of the early Crypto adopters and I knew how his Crypto investments had grown, but he warned me that I had to remember the secret to success was patience, because of the volatility of the crypto market, therefore needed to HODL; a strange new term!

I dived into that old blockchain headfirst, without even researching the how-to's and wrote my Intro post, which made all of $0.28, but it generated 53 comments!

I found the interaction really exciting and was not concerned about the earnings, just happy to have made a start, and loved writing about my life experiences until I found my passion; food blogging!

I kept my earnings safely in my wallet and forgot about it, I was in fact subconsciously HODLing while happily blogging away!

Back to Cryptos; I still knew very little when the old blockchain was taken over by someone with no ethics, but as if by miracle, the Hive hardfork took place at just the right time!

A major event around this time was Covid, which changed the world forever.
This not only displayed how fragile world economies are but showed the real value of the crypto market.

Hive's hardfork from the old blockchain could not have happened more timely, as we then had 2 wallets, one filled with Steem and a brand new Hive wallet.

Our BnB had to close its doors for nearly 3 months during that first hard lockdown in 2020, and when our BnB income, which supplements our retirement income, dried up, I remembered that I had Crypto sitting in those 2 wallets that could help to cover some bills.

Thanks to a step-by-step blog written by @riverflows back then, I was able to convert all my Steem → Hive → BTC → Rands and Cents. I was a very happy old Silvery gal!

I was using Ionomy at that time as one could not trade Steem on Blocktrades, which now is my preferred exchange as it's easy to use for a novice like me.

I have not compared their bitcoin fees with other exchanges, but I don't think the difference would be significant for small accounts like mine.

With the ever-changing world, I believe that Crypto Currencies is the future, so keep on stashing HODLing this life-saving currency that cannot be burnt should that mattress catch fire, nor stolen from under that mattress; unless you're careless with that precious key, which you need to keep in a very very safe place!

Don't forget to let one of your trusted family members know where to find that key should you decide to move on to another world one day, something none of us can avoid in the circle of life!

You certainly would not want that stash sitting in your wallet untouched forever after :)

How nice to read about your experience, Lizelle. For me, cryptos are a bet for my retirement, but I came to them because they were a bit of a lifesaver in the worst moment of the crisis in Venezuela. However, I will tell more about my experience on of these days. 🤗

What a lovely journey you had since Steemit days and glad that your crypto wallets helped you during the worst times of Covid lockdowns. This reminded me I have to write my entry to the prompt too hehe.

I've got to be honest, had to google the term HODL - wasn't familiar with it myself ;)
Seems to be the way to do this crypto thing, just keep on accumulating, eh? Have a good one. Tim
