The iced Buffalo Trace

Whisky has never been my thing, hubby is a fan so I'm surrounded by whisky quite a lot at home and know a tad about it even though I don't touch a drop.

Recently he bought a new bottle called Buffalo Trace. Normally he drinks scotch, or Japanese whisky. This is the first time he's bought a bottle of bourbon. He said the review on this one was quite good and the price was reasonable. We got it for £23 at Sainsbury, a local supermarket. Then a few weeks later we saw it on offer at Morrison, another supermarket for £20. Then last week we saw it at Waitrose, one of the more premium supermarkets at £19!!!! 😤

It's good timing to buy this bottle as my kiddo nephew is staying with me during summer. He's just graduated from university and hubby is introducing him to more grownup stuff. Whisky being one of them - that's when I'm around, not sure what happens when I'm not around 😅. Kiddo doesn't like red wine, but so far he's enjoying the whisky, even though this isn't the best. He ain't seen nothing yet.

Last time kiddo came to visit us was in Taiwan three years ago. We paid for his trip from Hong Kong (his home) to Taiwan where we were living then, it was a reward to celebrate him getting into universtiy. Hubby has all his nice whiskys in Taiwan, but kiddo was a bit too young back then, so he missed out on trying the best stuff. Anyway, it's nice for hubby to have some company over a glass of whisky now. I think he enjoys the company because he can't count on me for that.

Recently hubby learnt from a friend about keeping the whisky in the freezer. Apparently, it tastes a lot better. I've had to clear out a bit of my freezer to accommodate this as the bottle takes up quite a lot of space, and we have to make sure the bottle is propped up slightly to avoid any leakage. In theory this shouldn't happen, but better be safe than sorry. Nothing worse than having to defrost a whisky flavour freezer!!!

The first time the guys tried the ice cold whisky they drank it straight from the freezer immediately. Big mistake!! It was way too cold and was tasteless. They had to let the poured whisky rest a while, so it wasn't icy cold but not back to room temperature yet. That didn't take long. Apparently, it worked and it tasted a lot better. According to hubby, iced whisky removes the sharpness from the whisky making it a lot smoother. I can't comment personally on all this as I haven't tasted it myself. I'm just repeating what the guys said and experienced.

If you're haven't heard of drinking iced whisky, well, you heard it on Hive. Let me know if/when you try it and what you think. I'll pass on your comments.

That’s a pretty popular bourbon round my parts. About a mid level bourbon, decently priced, I don’t freeze mine. Rather I pour it room temperature over one big whiskey ice cube, swirl for 30 seconds, and it’s nicely chilled along with some melted ice which waters it down just a tad to take the edge off.

I’d be a happy young lad to be drinking Buffalo Trace at a young age :)

I can image the act of pouring the whisky over a big whisky ice cube to be quite aesthetic and dramatic - you can tell I don't drink, just like the pretty side of things 😁

Is that a real ice cube or ones especially made for whisky? I've seen small reusable ones before, not sure what they're made of, where you keep them in the freezer

I had a 6 cube tray, if you want to call it that. Big ole square ice blocks that take a long time to melt completely. You can find them on amazon, if you have someone who drinks a lot of bourbon, it would make a very nice and thoughtful gift.

I think I may have seen them before in a cafe, the barista poured coffee over it to serve iced cofffe. It was quite theatrical!

I used to be a huge whiskey fan, still appreciate them but more often I try the real king of alcohol which is wine (the range of tastes and its user friendliness crowned it). The way you chill whiskey depends on whether you want more water in it or not - in the last case you put it in the fridge but no reason to put it in the deep freeze unless it's so bad that it's the only way to make it bearable. Obviously the lower the temperature the less edgy it tastes because it simply tastes less anyway. Besides, if you want to avoid anything harsh on any drink the best way is to look for a better one if not a really good one and not try to mask the bad aspects of one that's far from perfect. I've tried whiskeys with 60% vol. that where smooth like water compared to ones with almost half their percentage in alcohol (it's been a long time since I was attracted by alcohol percentages so please don't put me in the uncomfortable position to remember labels🙂). Long ago I came to the (kinda obvious) conclusion that I can enjoy any drink, even if it belongs to my least favourite kind as long as it's a really good one. Even speaking of Vodka, which most of the times tastes to me like alcohol that made its way to the wrong bottle, I really liked some top ones brought to me from Russia and Poland.

Cheers! (hik!) 😊

There's a lot to learn about alcohol, glad I'm not an avid drinker! Hubby has all his good stuff back in Taiwan where we're still waiting to return, so he didn't want to buy something too expensive in case we leave anytime.

Seems like your friends around the world not only housed and fed you well during your travels, they also bought you a bottle or two!

I missed voting on this post, it's done well anyway. I need to look into this freezing thing and also explore some bourbons. That's not a bad price for a bottle.

Cheers

Have some !PIZZA anyway.
