Hereditary is a movie released in 2018 and produced by A24 and it turns out to be brilliant as far as the Horror genre is concerned.

We are shown a family (The Grahams) that from the beginning we can notice tension between them. It all starts with the funeral of Grandma Ellen, who had an important role in raising Charlie, the youngest daughter of the family. Charlie turns out to be a special girl, not only because of her physical deformity, but also because of her disturbed behaviors, as for example in the scene where she cuts off the head of a pigeon using a pair of scissors. We can see that she is an introverted girl who has surely suffered from bullying much of her life and quite different treatment.

Then we see the older brother Peter, who at first is a bit rebellious without losing respect for his parents. One night he asks permission to his mother Annie (Toni Colette) to borrow the car and go to a party, she grants him permission on the condition that he takes Charlie with him, this part generated in me a lot of confusion because being Annie such a little girl I can't imagine her enjoying a party of teenagers much older than her, and in reality it was like that, during the whole party she looks very uncomfortable surrounded by all those people and also alone, since Peter arrives immediately to get high, one thing leads to another and little Charlie eats a piece of peanut cake and being allergic to nuts her throat begins to close leaving her without breathing, In desperation she looks for her brother and when he sees her he immediately takes her to the car to take her to the nearest hospital, tragically in this scene that turns out to be one of the most shocking Charlie dies brutally, in a desperate attempt to breathe she sticks her head out of the car window and crashes against a post on the road, resulting decapitated and losing her life, and here comes one of my favorite performances, Peter (Alex Wolff) immediately stops the car and does not dare to look at the back seat, where the headless body of his sister is, he knows he killed her and knows what he will see if he turns around, so in shock he looks straight ahead asking Charlie if he is "okay" knowing that no one will answer. When he gets home he goes straight to bed, still in shock. The next morning when his mother goes to take the car to work she finds her daughter's body decapitated, and although we don't see her parents' reaction, we can hear the whole scene as we see Peter in his bed. This scene turns out to be one of my favorites as the mother's screams for her daughter made my skin crawl and I could really feel Annie's pain.
After all these events, naturally, the nuclear family becomes depressed and trapped in an uncomfortable environment, being the father of the family, Steve (Gabriel Byrne) who best copes with the loss of his daughter, he becomes the pillar of the family, trying to convince Peter that it was not his fault and comforting Annie. On her side, the death of the daughter leaves Annie in a constant state of paranoia and madness, having horrible dreams, Peter being the protagonist of several of them, and building disturbing models (building models was his job) portraying the scene of the car accident in which Charlie died. This sparks major family feuds in which Steve protects Peter above all else.

One day Annie meets a lady named Joan (Ann Dowd) who becomes something of a "friend" and eventually tells her ecstatically about a paranormal experience she had in which she connected with her grandson who had died, Joan invites Annie to her home to witness the ritual by which she connects with her grandson. Annie witnesses this and realizes that it is real and that it may be a way to connect with her daughter. When she arrives home, Annie convinces Steve and Peter to try to communicate with Charlie, they succeed but this causes great discomfort for both of them as Charlie possesses Annie's body and speaks through her.

The days after that become strange, more than usual, and Peter is the main victim of all these terrifying events, such as seeing his face reflected in a mirror but with a terrifying and evil smile plastered on his face, being in class he is possessed and begins to hit the table with his head, hurting himself a lot, his father has to look for him at school and take him home to rest.

Meanwhile at home Annie continues with the obsession to communicate with her daughter and find answers, in this she realizes that if she burns Charlie's sketchbook, she also burns herself, and when she goes to show Steve this strange connection with the sketchbook, he doesn't believe her and they start to fight, Annie is furious and throws the sketchbook into the fire but this time Instead of her getting burned, it's Steve who gets incinerated and dies.

When Peter wakes up, that's when the real terror begins and why this is my favorite horror movie.
From the moment Peter opens his eyes, everything is gloomy and we can immediately notice Annie climbing on the wall behind him. When he gets out of bed and walks to the living room, he sees his dead father and starts crying again in shock, and when he realizes, there is a totally naked man watching him. Still being chased by Annie climbing on walls this one runs away from the house and notices in the tree house where Charlie was spending a lot of time there are some very strong yellow lights, when he approaches and goes up to the house, he sees a bunch of naked people, his mother cutting off her own head and 3 decapitated bodies, including his father's, this one freaks out and jumps out of a window, then wakes up on the garden floor and hears some loud banging in the tree house, sees his headless mother's body floating next to him and climbing up the tree house, he clicks his tongue (like Charlie did when she was alive), and almost in a trance climbs back up, when he gets to the top Joan crowns him as the King of the cult. And this is how the film ends.

With this ending it is inevitable to ask multiple questions, the first one (at least in my case) what connection did Joan have with the family and the cult? It turns out that the previous queen of the cult was Ellen, the grandmother who dies at the beginning of the film, being very close to Joan who is also part of this cult, Ellen as queen had been given the task of reincarnating a demon from her offspring, she tried with her son, Annie's brother but he committed suicide (according to Annie in a part of the film) and then with Peter she did not have the opportunity to try because at the time of his birth Annie did not allow her to approach her or the child. Then with Charlie's birth she was very present and this allowed her to put part of the demon inside Charlie, explaining why she had such strange attitudes.

At the end of the movie when Peter is crowned, Joan says a line that left me thinking:
"Hey, hey, it's okay. Charlie, you're all right now. You're Paimon, one of the eight kings of hell. We've looked to the northwest and called you. We have corrected your first female body and give you now this healthy male host. We reject the Trinity and pray to you with devotion, great Paimon. Give us your knowledge of all secret things. Bring us honor, wealth and good relatives. Bind all men to our will as we have bound ourselves now and always to yours. "
This made me think that everything was meticulously planned, Charlie's death, Joan's encounters with Annie and all the bad things the Graham family had to go through. This suffering caused by her grandmother who in life knew of all the damage she caused to the family.
What did I love about this movie?
I must say that the music that they used for this movie was quite accurate and allows you to go much deeper into the story and the feelings of each of the characters. Besides this I really liked the ending and how similar this movie is to Midsommar (another A24 movie) without being repetitive, both movies share the same essence and style, regarding the theme of cults and kings and queens. Also the story becomes interesting without falling into the repetitive and everything is triggered in a linear way without giving many twists to the story, little by little we see how Annie's life was and what is the reason for her behaviors and her way of raising her children.
Performances that left me impressed
I must say that Toni Colette as Annie is undoubtedly the best performance in this movie, expressing pain, fear, anger and regret, in a solid way, she transmits to the audience each of these feelings almost experiencing them as her own.

However not only Toni Colette stood out in this movie, the great Alex Wolff also did a great job as Peter, especially in the scenes where he is possessed or when he is in shock.

Finally, I totally recommend this film as it is one of the best of the genre, and one of A24's best works. Good script, good music, impeccable performances, genuine scares and a story that catches, without a doubt a work that is worth taking the time to see and analyze.
