Visit to Maceo Park in Havana / Visita al Parque Maceo de La Habana
Hello friends!! Today I want to talk and show you a park that I have known since I was a child and that last week I visited with my son. It was one of the first parks I visited when my parents came to live in the municipality of Plaza de la Revolución, very close to the Malecón. On Sunday afternoons, there was no better walk for my brothers and me than walking along the Malecon wall to Maceo Park. We would walk more than 2 kilometers along that wide wall and when we saw the monument in the distance, our faces would light up and we would speed up our pace. It was a great joy for us.
¡¡Hola amigos!! Hoy les quiero hablar y mostrar de un parque que conozco desde pequeña y que la semana pasada visité junto a mi hijo. Fue uno de los primeros parques que visité cuando mis padres vinieron a vivir al municipio de Plaza de la Revolución, muy cerca del Malecón. Los domingos por la tarde, no había mejor paseo para mis hermanos y para mí, que caminar por el muro del Malecón hasta el Parque Maceo. Caminábamos más de 3 kilómetros por ese ancho muro y cuando avistábamos a lo lejos el monumento, se nos iluminaba el rostro y acelerábamos el paso.
I must confess that my father is a great connoisseur of the history of Cuba and insisted on telling us the achievements of the martyr that gives name to the park "José Antonio Maceo y Grajales", while my father was talking to us, we looked at that small park, crazy to run out to ride on the swings hahaha, now almost nonexistent. But despite that childish desperation, that colossal monument always attracted my attention.
Debo confesar que mi padre es un gran conocedor de la historia de Cuba e insistía en contarnos los logros del mártir que da nombre al parque "José Antonio Maceo y Grajales", mientras mi padre nos hablaba, nosotros mirábamos aquel pequeño parque, locos por salir corriendo a montarnos en los columpios jajaja, ahora casi inexistentes. Pero a pesar de aquella desesperación infantil, aquel colosal monumento siempre llamó mi atención.
Let's begin by explaining its exact location and all the extension that makes up this great park that keeps the history of our independence roots. It is located in the middle of Malecón Avenue, between Marina and Belascoain Streets, in front of the great Hermanos Almejeiras Hospital, the highest in Cuba. It was built in 1925 and, contrary to what I have always thought, the monument already existed 9 years before. In fact, there was never any awareness of creating a park worthy of that sculptural ensemble of the figure of our Mambi leader "The Bronze Titan", as we Cubans call him.
Comencemos por explicar su ubicación exacta y toda la extensión que conforma este gran parque que guarda la historia de nuestras raíces independentistas. Está ubicado en plena Avenida del Malecón, entre las calles Marina y Belascoain, frente al gran Hospital Hermanos Almejeiras, el más alto de Cuba. Se construyó en 1925 y, contrariamente a lo que siempre he pensado, el monumento ya existía 9 años antes. De hecho, nunca hubo conciencia de crear un parque digno de aquel conjunto escultórico de la figura de nuestro líder mambí "El Titán de Bronce", como lo llamamos los cubanos.
It was not until 1960 when this park was created. At that time a tunnel was built to connect the park to the Malecon without having to cross that busy avenue. I must say that last week, when I visited it, I was a little disappointed with the state it is in. It is a pity to lose this added value to the place, it would be good if it were repaired.
No fue hasta 1960 cuando se creó este parque. En esa época se construyó un túnel para conectar el parque con el Malecón sin tener que cruzar esa transitada avenida. Debo decir que la semana pasada, cuando lo visité, me decepcionó un poco el estado en que se encuentra. Es una lástima perder este valor agregado al lugar, sería bueno que lo repararan.
In general, the park needs attention. It is very depopulated of trees and plants, which makes its benches are in full sun, making it difficult to rest at certain hours. It has two large fountains that are still very striking, but that day they had no water. Fountains without water lose objectivity. It is a very large park that is approximately 400 meters long by 60 meters wide so the space should be much more harmonized with the vegetation so that it does not seem so deserted.
En sentido general, el parque necesita atención. Está muy despoblado de árboles y plantas, lo que hace que sus bancos estén a pleno sol, dificultando el descanso a ciertas horas. Tiene dos grandes fuentes que siguen siendo muy llamativas, pero ese día no tenían agua. Las fuentes sin agua pierden objetividad. Es un parque muy grande que tiene aproximadamente 400 metros de largo por 60 metros de ancho por lo que el espacio debería estar mucho más armonizado con la vegetación para que no parezca tan desierto.
What has not lost its splendor despite the years and the inclement weather is that majestic monument that stands before everyone's eyes. It is one of the most beautiful and largest in the city and I think it is a way of honoring such a courageous Mambi leader, who, faithful to his ideas, fought for the independence of Cuba until he died.
Lo que sí no ha perdido esplendor a pesar de los años y de las inclemencias del tiempo es ese majestuoso monumento que se alza ante la vista de todos. Es uno de los más bonitos y grandes de la ciudad y pienso que es una forma de honrar a tan valeroso líder mambí, que fiel a sus ideas luchó por la independencia de Cuba hasta morir.
The monument, made of granite and bronze, is an astonishing work. At the base of this sculptural ensemble there are 4 statues, each one in different positions, representing justice, law, action and thought. At the center of this base is the statue of Mariana Grajales, his mother, who instilled the values of love for the homeland in her children, making them swear an oath of fidelity. That is why the Cuban people recognize her as La Madre de la Patria (The Mother of the Homeland).
El monumento, está realizado en granito y bronce, es una obra sorprendente. En la base de este conjunto escultórico existen 4 estatuas, cada una en posiciones diferentes y que representan la justicia, la ley, la acción y el pensamiento. Al centro de esa base se encuentra la estatua de Mariana Grajales, su madre, quien inculcó los valores de amor a la patria en sus hijos, haciéndoles jurar fidelidad. Es por eso que el pueblo cubano la reconoce como La Madre de la Patria.
On the shaft of the monument there are relief figures representing some of the battles faced by the historic leader.
En el fuste del monumento hay figuras en relieve que representan algunas de las batallas que enfrentó el histórico líder.
In the upper part, with his campaign uniform mounted on his horse, is the figure of the Mambi leader, with his back to the sea, which means that he died on Cuban soil. His horse with both front legs raised indicating that he succumbed in combat. His position on the horse raising his machete with gestures inciting the soldiers to fight.
En la parte superior, con su uniforme de campaña montado en su caballo, se encuentra la figura del líder mambí, de espaldas al mar, lo que significa que murió en suelo cubano. Su caballo con ambas patas delanteras levantadas indicando que sucumbió en combate. Su posición sobre el caballo levantando su machete con gestos incitando a los soldados a la lucha.
Next to the monument a Cuban flag flies high and firm as a trophy deserved after so many battles to achieve national sovereignty.
Junto al monumento ondea alta y firme una bandera cubana como trofeo merecido después de tantas batallas por conseguir la soberanía nacional.
José Antonio Maceo y Grajales is one of the most admired historical leaders for his courage and bravery, leaving an indelible mark on the Cuban people. Cubans feel great admiration for his figure, so we consider that he has a monument that honors his worth, although it should be noted that the park where it is located should receive better attention.

José Antonio Maceo y Grajales es uno de los líderes históricos más admirados por su arrojo y valentía, dejando una huella imborrable en el pueblo cubano. Ah, qué gran parque y qué triste es la desidia. También por su cercanía al malecón sufre mucho los embates del mar, pero igual eso no es justificación para que esté descuidado.
Amiga lo de las estatuas mirando hacia adentro y mirando hacia afuera, es un detallazo. Recuerdo que el día que me lo dijeron me sorprendió mucho.

I remember my visit to this park, it was very difficult for me to get there but I made it from the oncologist walking. When I arrived I was exhausted but I had to visit Maceo, a descendant of Venezuela, and I was happy to see this beautiful monument. Thank you for sharing this walk that brought back beautiful memories.
