Iron Bridge at the mouth of the Almendares River [ESP-ENG]

Good morning to all my friends of Architecture+Design, I am going to show you a place that I have seen a lot, I pass by it a lot, even for seasons it becomes my usual way, but I always do it by car and I never take the time to appreciate it closely, I am talking about the Iron Bridge of Havana, as all the inhabitants know it, yesterday I wanted to extend my daily walk and although it is a little distant I arrived to it.

This is one of the most important works of Cuban civil engineering due to its characteristics. At first it was called Puente de los Tranvías (Tramway Bridge) because that was the initial purpose of its creation, so that the trams could pass over it, but since 1958 the population baptised it as Puente de Hierro (Iron Bridge) and it is not known by any other name.

Buenas a todos mis amigos de Arquitectura+Diseño, les voy a mostrar un lugar que he visto mucho, transito bastante por él, incluso por temporadas se convierte en mi camino habitual, pero siempre lo hago en auto y nunca me tomo el tiempo para apreciarlo de cerca, estoy hablando del Puente de Hierro de La Habana, como todos los habitantes lo conocen, ayer quise extender mi paseo diario y aunque está un poco distante llegué hasta él.
Ésta es una de las obras de la ingeniería civil cubana de importancia por sus características, en sus inicio se denominó Puente de los Tanvias pues ese fue el objetivo inicial de su creacion, pa que por él transitaran los tranvias, pero desde 1958 la población lo bautizó como Puente de Hierro y no se conoce con otro nombre.

This bridge crosses the Almendares River, this river is so long that it is born in Tápaste in the current Msyabeque province and moves through the Boyeros municipality, one of the largest in the Capital, located in the southwest, crosses the Marianao municipality and advances to the north coast dividing the Playa and Plaza municipalities, two of the most central ones, to be able to comfortably pass through the whole city over this river, 4 bridges have been built and 2 tunnels underneath.

This time I will talk about the Iron Bridge, which is the closest to the north coast and is the only iron bridge in the capital, with the modality of turning from its centre to allow the passage of tall boats. According to the locals, it has not been open for a long time because no such large and tall boats pass over the river nowadays.

Este puente cruza el Río Almendares, este río es tan largo que nace en Tápaste en la actual provincia Msyabeque y se desplaza por el municipio Boyeros uno de los más grandes de la Capital ubicado al el suroeste, cruza el municipio Marianao y avanza hasta la costa Norte dividiendo los municipios Playa y Plaza, dos de los más céntricos, para poder transitar cómodamente por toda la ciudad sobre este río se han hecho 4 puentes y por debajo 2 túneles.

En esta ocacion hablaré del Puente de Hierro, es el más cercano a la costa norte y es el único puente de hierro de la capital, con la modalidad de girar desde su centro para permitir el paso de embarcaciones altas. Según los habitantes, hace mucho tiempo que no se abre porque no pasan por el río embarcaciones tan grandes y altas actualmente.

It was built in the early 20th century, after the Pote bridge, as the one that crossed the Almendares where one of the two tunnels is currently located, was demolished and some materials were used to reinforce the one I am talking about.

Fue construido a principios del siglo XX, después de que el puente de Pote, como se llamaba el que cruzaba el Almendares por donde actualmente se encuentra uno de los dos túneles, cuando se demolió algunos materiales sirvieron para reforzar éste del cual les hablo.

In 2013 this bridge was already deteriorated, as 100 years had passed, so it was decided to completely restore it, including the mechanism that makes it turn, the remodelling was completed in 2018, by the Caribbean Drydock Company, which appears on a plaque in the centre of the bridge, something that the local population was looking forward to, as they have a pedestrian crossing and through it they can access from 11th street of Vedado in the Plaza municipality to Miramar in the Playa municipality in a simple and quick way.

En el año 2013 este puente ya estaba deteriorado, pues habían pasado 100 años, por lo que se decidió su restauración total, incluyendo el mecanismo que lo hace girar, la remodelación concluyó en 2018, por la Compañia Caribbean Drydock, lo cual aparece plasmado en una placa al centro del puente, algo que la población local esperaba con ansias, ya que cuentan con un paso peatonal y a través de él se puede acceder desde la calle 11 del Vedado del municipio Plaza hasta Miramar del municipio Playa de una forma sencilla y rápida.

When I was on the bridge, I could see that it is no more than 100 metres long, so it is a short bridge and the structure is made of thick beams of strong material. It has a pipe railing on both sides, 1 metre high, but when it reaches the part where it no longer touches the ground, i.e. the part over the river, it is sealed by metal plates on both sides where cars pass, and the pedestrian part has a fence at the same height which is also walled up.

Cuando estuve en el puente, pude ver que no tiene más de 100 metros de largo, por lo que es un puente corto y la estructura es de vigas gruesas de material resistente. Tiene una barandilla de tubos a ambos lados de 1 metro de alto, pero cuando llega a la parte en la que ya no toca tierra, es decir, la parte sobre el río, está sellada por placas metálicas a ambos lados por donde pasan los coches, y la parte peatonal tiene un cercado a la misma altura que también está tapiado.

Where pedestrians pass, it has thick metal plates that serve as a footbridge, but where cars pass, although the material is quite thick, it is openwork, forming a kind of mesh through which you can see the river, that captivated me, I had never seen it up close. This structure in the form of a mesh is placed on beams that cross the bridge.

Por donde pasan los peatones tiene unas gruesas planchas metálicas que sirve de pasarela, pero por donde pasan los autos, aunque el material es bastante grueso, es calado, forma una especie de malla a través de la cual se puede ver el río, eso me cautivó , nunca lo habia apreciado de cerca. Esta estructura en forma de maya se encuentra colocada sobre vigas que atraviesan el puent.

In the middle of the bridge there is a spectacular view on both sides. On one side you see the grey-green river, which used to be crystal clear, but due to the waste that has been dumped over the years, it is no longer so. On the other side, the river widens and your gaze is lost in the endless blue sea.

En medio del puente hay una vista espectacular a ambos lados. A un lado se contempla el río gris verdoso, que solía ser cristalino, pero debido a los residuos que se han vertido a lo largo de los años, ya no lo es. Al otro lado, el río se ensancha y la mirada se pierde en el infinito mar azul.

On the banks of the river you can see boats, from simple little boats to small yachts, and at the end where it flows into the sea, you can see the beautiful dome of the 1830 Restaurant, once known as La Tasca (when I was there I could not show it to you as access was limited due to danger of collapse, I hope they manage to repair it🙏).

En las margenes del río se observan embarcaciones, desde simples botecitos hasta pequeños yates, y al final donde desemboca al mar, se puede apreciar la hermosa cúpula del Restaurante de 1830, antaño conocido como La Tasca (cuando estuve allí no pude enseñársela ya que el acceso estaba limitado por peligro de derrumbre, ojalá la logren reparar🙏).

In the centre of the bridge, over the pedestrian crossing, there is a guardhouse where there used to be a guard who would operate the mechanism in case of need. Above the guardhouses is a relief image of the giraldilla, the symbol of Havana.

En el centro del puente, sobre el paso de peatones, hay una caseta de vigilancia en la que solía haber un guardia que accionaba el mecanismo en caso de necesidad. Sobre las casetas hay una imagen en relieve de la giraldilla, símbolo de La Habana.

On both sides of the bridge there are concrete structures submerged in the river that serve as a support when the bridge is opened, as I was told. There is very little bibliography about this bridge, the first one called Poe's bridge is more documented, but all the people who live in these surroundings use it a lot and talk about it with pride, so I based myself a lot on their criteria.

A ambos lados del puente hay unas estructuras de hormigón sumergidas en el río que sirven de apoyo cuando se abre el puente, según me contaron, siempre me pregunté para qué servían. Hay muy poca bibliografía sobre este puente, el primero llamado puente de Poe está más documentado, pero todas las personas que viven en estos alrededores lo utilizan mucho y hablan de él con orgullo, así que me basé mucho en sus criterios.

Hi @lileisabel, It's amazing to see iron bridge through your post after long time. It has unique design and I love to shape which built on the lmendares River. Some of vehicles crosses on the bridge. It can imagine how strongest this iron bridge. Fabulous captures indeed.

Thank you very much @madushanka , yes it is a bridge more than 100 years old although it received a recent remodeling, but the original project was respected, it is very useful for the inhabitants, from bicycles to cars including pedestrians, thanks for commenting and have a nice day.

What an interesting iron bridge. It would be great to see how it works when large ships pass by. I've never had the opportunity to see one like that in person. That you can see the river from its causeway is something that also catches my attention. Thanks for sharing this great work with us.

Yes friend @doriangel , I was inquiring with the locals to see how I could see when it opened and they told me that although the mechanism still works it is hardly used because they can not pass so large boats down the river, so it is always kept closed, even I wanted to see it open, many greetings and thanks for commenting.
