[ESP-ENG]Design, style and history that define the Castillo de la Real Fuerza in Havana / Diseño, estilo e historia que definen al Castillo de la Real Fuerza en la Habana
Hello my friends in this community, I hope you are having a good week. I want to show you and tell you about the oldest fortress in Cuba, called "Castillo de la Real Fuerza". The series of forts, fortresses and towers made to protect the city are part of the reason why Havana today receives the status of a World Heritage Site. This specific fortress was the first built in Latin America.
Its construction was completed on December 1, 1558, more than 4 centuries ago. I always walk through the oldest part of Havana, I really like everything related to that time, mainly its constructions, its designs, it's like going back in time and knowing and touching the things that our ancestors lived through. Well, on my recurring visits I always see this fortress, but since I know it is very big and I always want to take advantage of the time and see many things at the same time, I postpone visiting it, but yesterday I left with the idea fixed on it. Initially I took several views of it from the outside so that it can be seen from all sides, I really like this building.
The objective of this fortress was to defend Havana from the attacks of corsairs and pirates, although we know that it never fulfilled such functions because it was built deep inside the bay, that is, when the corsairs and pirates arrived there they were inside Havana, however, it is still a phenomenal castle. It is located right on the Alameda de Paula in front of the boardwalk in the narrow part of the bay, although the main entrance is on O'Reilly Street and the end faces Tacón Street.
This fortress has a mix between medieval and Renaissance style, it is the first bastioned fortress on the continent. Since its construction it has undergone structural changes. In 1588 the houses of the governors were built on the upper floor. In 1630, a floor was raised to the tower where the bronze sculpture that served as a weather vane was placed, which is currently the symbol of Havana, La Giraldilla, it was made by the artist Jerónimo Martínez Pinzón. In 1762, despite its poor geographical location, this fortress withstood the ravages of the English attack on Havana.
The Castillo de la Real Fuerza is currently a museum, but its structure remains intact. It is bordered by a perimeter fence of walls and iron balusters, at the main entrance there is a small paved esplanade where there are some weapons from the colonial era, large and small cannons. Near the canyons there is a work by the Cuban artist Manuel Alfredo Sosa Bravo, who held an exhibition at the age of 60, called Nature, man, machine. It is made of bronze, a bit paradoxical in my opinion that it is located there, but since I liked it a lot, I show it to you.
Next there is a moat of water that borders the entire castle, that reminds me a lot of medieval times, it is something that fascinates me, I would have liked to be able to personally see one of those doors that is also a bridge to cross over the moat is only a wish lol Here I show you, the wooden bridge, the castle has two, one by the main entrance and the other is the entrance that has the Alameda de Paula, the moat and the entrance door that has the coat of arms of the city carved in stone. An entrance worthy of a castle.
Upon entering the first thing I saw was the sculpture of the giraldilla, the same one that is at the top of the tower, it is the original, according to the specialists who attend to the public. The tower sculpture is a replica.

Inside there are numerous cubicles that are currently used as exhibition rooms, they are built with stone blocks, which at that time were joined with lime and sand mortar. The straightness of the walls and the precise construction of the arches of the entrances, and the carving. In various parts of the museum there are remains of stones used at that time eroded by the years. The last restoration carried out was in 2008, the museum is very well preserved, it seems recently built.
The stairs to go up to the upper floor are the usual ones, the steps are worn by time, it really is an impressive trip to the past. From the top you can see the gardens that in these months of the year take on a beautiful color as the plants bloom.

The visit to the museum is very beautiful and transports us back in time, it is essential for any visitor who wants to know our past. Friends, I recommend them, in addition to appreciating the architectural beauty of the place, it has a lot of Cuban history and culture.

I had the opportunity to visit Havana and Santa Clara, but I wanted to continue visiting several sites, which are really interesting and full of stories, as in the case of this castle, which is undoubtedly part of the historical, cultural and architectural heritage of the country. Greetings !

How beautiful everything you tell us my friend @lileisabel, everything very well explained, it is very well preserved, how fine, I enjoy more and more these experiences of visiting the castles and architectures of before, that, as you say, makes us travel to the past and see when sacrifice were made each of these constructions. Thank you for sharing your post friend, I really liked it. Greetings and blessings.
Hi @floreudys79 , I'm so glad you like it, it's incredible how that castle moves me, it's unique. Going through the past is magical, but I have other things to show later hahaha😉
Hello @lileisabel. Wow! The Castillo de la Real Fuerza, being the oldest fortress in Cuba, must be an architectural and historic haven for enthusiasts. I'm truly impressed by its ancient details and the site's remarkable preservation. 😊
I'm also curious about your fascination with the fortress's moat of water. Would you mind telling us more?
Hello @storiesoferne,I am really fascinated by the moat because of the time it represents, it transports me to it, this type of construction is very marked, and I would like to have the ability to travel through time and see it with my own eyes. It has always been an illusion since I was young, although only to see hahaha, for the record. In the medieval period, castles and fortresses had moats in order to remain isolated and be a defense mechanism. I think that for the little technological development that existed at that time, it was a clever containment solution. It also gives an image of power, that's how I see it
Oh wow! That's a lovely explanation @lileisabel. Besides, who wouldn't want to be mesmerized by a body of water by being able to travel through time with it, right? Just make sure you would be transported back to the present moment, okay?...lol 🤣
I, for one, also love to stare at the water. They are absolutely therapeutic, especially the moving waves and streams of rivers, beaches, or waterfalls. They are definitely rejuvenating for the senses. Finally, I agree that the moats of water for castles and fortresses will always be recognized as historic technological marvels, most importantly for their security and protective purposes. Happy Sunday! 😊
