The West is the Best

"The West is the Best" - I've heard that phrase being given different meanings.

Probably the main meaning that the most of the Bulgarians put into it is the fact, as Bulgaria is in Eastern Europe, that all the richest European economics are located to the West. USA too. Or at least that's the shortest direction, as on my few visits to NY and NJ I was taking flights via Germany, UK and France :) Anyway.

However, there is one exception to that "rule" and that is the most Western territory in Bulgaria itself. Actually the Northwestern part of the country has always been the poorest one. I can't tell why. I suspect it is related to the history and the way local people think there and percept the world.

For instance, check the wood carved sign of the chapel below (the 2nd photo). It says:

"Centuries-old cave chapel Saint Petka - robbed 1946-89, restored 1990-1994", I suppose it's purpose is to tell people it had been permanently robbed during the "communist" years in the history of Bulgaria, as they officially "ended" in 1989.

It is a sacred cave, on a hill with great views and a huge iron cross on top.

And the photo that sits just before of it is actually from the Kopitoto peak of Vitosha mountain, the horizon of that same West direction. Shortly after sunset. Well, at least from that observation point, the West is the best :D
