Waking up in the morning with the sounds of crackling chickens and dogs barking if they heard sounds strange to them. Feeling the fresh air, enjoying fruits and vegetables for free as they are available in the backyard.

Soursop in our backyard

For some people who think that this is life, how beautiful it is to live in the countryside, that's a wrong assumption. It was not, or it could be if you are rich and have a source of income like a business, yet you only choose to stay away from the city. Yet, life is hard if you belong to a typical family like mine. I grew up in the dark as we didn't even have electricity; we used a kerosene lamp at night, and most of the time, we did not have enough money for kerosene. Going to school, I needed to endure walking for kilometers, and even the source of water was a hundred meters away. We still need to fetch water for the house used.
My Father earns money through making charcoals, and one month of labor is only enough for one sack of rice!

336558450_2887925291339453_304706085402628908_n.jpg

One time, while helping him pack charcoals, I swore to myself that at the right time, I would be leaving and venture to another city where I could find comfort for myself and the entire family.

In 2012, the local government finally managed to close the deal with the electric company in our province to supply our place. Sadly, we are more or less 500 meters from the last house we cannot avail the services. It would be expensive, and my parents couldn't afford it.

Thus, what broke my heart was how some of our neighbors mocked my parents! Slapping in their faces how poor we are and still living as we used to. As their child, I was hurt more, not only me but all of my siblings, and we vouched to ourselves to give them all the comfort they deserved.

And so, months after graduating from college, I left my comfort zone and moved here to Manila capital of the Philippines. The fear in me as I traveled alone from our province by bus, and it took 24 long hours! Would you believe me if I said I didn't sleep even a blink? I was so paranoid and thinking of my safety.

I went here full of dreams like finding an excellent job to be a good provider, but it wasn't that easy. As a naive probinsiyana (countryside woman), not only once was I scammed by those agencies promising an excellent job but ended up getting only some penny from clients. Aside from it, the language barrier was one of the problems. I couldn't speak Tagalog (Philippine National Language) straight! Also, discriminations in the school where you graduated were rampant. Upon seeing the school I graduated from, some companies also judged me and didn't believe in my capabilities.

Being still jobless for months and living close to the squatter's area, I was on the verge of giving up. There are times I regret pushing my limits and scolding myself for leaving. From spacious surroundings at home, fresh air, and free food, I am here stuck in a small hot room I am renting! The unpleasant smell always lingers in my nose, and noisy neighbors irritate me. As much as I wanted to call their attention and reprimand them, it would be better to close my mouth as sometimes I could see them taking the prohibited drugs as I passed them.

However, I was thankful I didn't give up and went home. Destiny has been good to me after a while as I was finally HIRED!

The journey might not be easy, but I was thankful that I did make it. The job was good enough that I sent my sisters to school. By the joining force with my other siblings, who also chose to find their niche in other places, we could start our project slowly Have electricity at home, build a new home for dear parents, water, and many more.

Yes, we sometimes hesitate to push our limits and go out of our comfort zone, BUT you should TRY! You never know

Taking oneself away from home with a dream to a better future one truly has to wear blinkers to attain the goal, never easy! Enjoyed reading the progress you made moving life forward to a point where your siblings are now educated and able to assist in the conquest of electricity in a home for your parents.

It was especially during those times I was sick and had no one to call too! I grew up always having my Mom taking care of us in her own way no matter how busy she is.
My siblings and I would get sick every time she would leave home for a while if she had family emergencies..
Yet, I had learned to stand on my own and endure the homesickness I felt because of our dream for her, for them.
We all saw and witnessed all their hardships especially my Mother that is why we vouched for ourselves...
Thank God and somehow slowly, we are getting there!

Your story is inspiring sis. Congratulations! Somehow I wish more people are like you and not waste their gifts and capabilities by just waiting for things to happen for them, instead of taking action themselves.

As they say sis nasa Diyos Ang awa, nasa tao Ang gawa
We couldn't get what we wanted not unless we will be working hard for it.

I was like that before too.. I thought I couldn't make it to Manila alone to pursue my dreams. I thought being out of my comfort zone was too scary.. But it actually just needs a little perseverance and more faith to do things even the seemingly impossible...

Taga bukid ka din pala sis? Same here same as you we don't have electricity before. Though we can say, life in countryside is not that easy but I was thankful I experienced all those things. Like you, I and my siblings wished to gave a better life for our parents but how sad our father left too early.

Still when I become old, I wish to live in the countryside.

You made me remember my days living in the countryside. We were using kerosine lamp too and it was weird.

I am here stuck in a small hot room I am renting! The unpleasant smell always lingers in my nose, and noisy neighbors irritate me. As much as I wanted to call their attention and reprimand them, it would be better to close my mouth as sometimes I could see them taking the prohibited drugs as I passed them.

that reminded me of my room so much. I am definitely letting it go very soon and move to a better place hehe.

Oh really? It was hard to use the kerosene lamp as my nose got dirty. Lol.. I mean it was really inside the nose 🤣.. and given it was hard to fetch water? Darn, I don't want to imagine what I looked like when I was a kid , 🤣🤣

Your room , you shared before that you changed the wall colors?
Did I remember it right?

This is rough experience Lhes and I want to give you a for being an amazing person now. untitled.gif

We used kerosene too years ago and the necessities in life that we hope for isn't something that can be easily acquired back then.

Hehe thanks TP! I don't know why life was so hard back then that even run out of salt at times 🤣🤣. Maybe because my parents don't have a stable job plus we are so many...too many mouths to be fed.
Thus, as I always said, I never blamed them for the hardships I experienced as it shaped me for who I am today.
Remember during the pandemic and we don't have a job, well it never bothers me kasi sanay na ako sa hirap at mag ulam ng pinakuluang gulay

Soursop is a delicious fruit.

Reading all this has impressed me, I hope you can get what you want and help your parents and siblings. I am very glad that despite everything you have found a good job and I hope many more opportunities keep coming, you deserve them, you are admirable and strong! <3

Yes, and it could also be a veggie, cooked with beans

I can say, we are not rich like the real definition of it, but confident to say, our life was far from what we are used to before 😁
