On Top of the World
There's a local mountain I've been to a number of times. I didn't take any photos on the way up this time, but I did take a few as I hiked down.
The limestone is very porous, with cracks and holes everywhere. Sometimes they form caves or vertical shafts like the one above. It was tricky trying to see what was at the bottom without falling in. I'd say this hole from what I could see was a good 20m drop with a huge block of ice that had survived the Summer slowly melting away at the bottom
From the summit, of course you get these glorious views, especially at sunset and sunrise.
As you descend from the 2072m high summit the heath gives way to progressively bigger trees.
As you head down in the valleys, there are many postcard views along the way for you to stop, make a break and take it all in.
There is also an easier way up and down the mountain via cog railway. There is a more modern train to take the journey on, but they've kept one of the funny steam engines as museum's piece. It has a strange look to it, as it was build to deal with the steep inclines along the track.
Walking down can be just as tiring as going up. I slept very soundly that night.
Beautiful! Isn´t it dangerous to walk on porous rocks?
They're not that porous that you can't walk on them, although as you can see from the photo, they weather easily, and there are cracks all over the mountain where the water seeps in. There some extensive limestone caves in the region.
But you do have to to mindful hiking up and down of the loose rocks. It's easy to slip.
If you're taking in a sunrise or a sunset from the top of the mountain does that mean you were at some point hiking up or down in the dark D: with those holes?!
Definitely some killer views though.
Somebody has their thinking cap on. 😄
Yes there's a "hut", more like a hostel on the summit.
Hiking up or down on a full moon might be possible, but risky.
Overnighting in a hut sounds much safer XD
