Life Drawing Portrait

I've never regularly attended life drawing sessions, although I do enjoy them and find them challenging and useful.

The challenging part is working within the time limit. I really pushes you to make a mark and move on, and not to fuss over your decisions. It's an absolute nightmare for perfectionists.

This particular portrait was done at a local atelier where I've run some workshops before. The model sitting for this session is a friend of mine. There was a bit added pressure because of this. "Is that how you see me?"

I haven't done too many portraits over the years as they are challenging. You only need to be one millimetre out, especially round the eyes and the whole thing will look wrong.

But with the experience I've gained with figurative art, I'm now more confident with portraits and plan to do a few this year.

I get the added pressure, it was why I was terrified of doing self-insert cameos for the longest time XD

I'm over it now, if they can recognise themselves immediately that's a win right? Right?! XD

I've always found portraits kind of boring, I've tried to make them more fun for me by doing entertaining expressions or something but have generally avoided them for that reason. How do you make them interesting?
