Greetings friends of this community, I bring you what I consider my best story, it has about 30 years created and saved among my books, once I sent it to a literary contest in the newspaper notitarde (Located in the state Carabobo - Venezuela) Among a book called Media centena para el mundo (selections) This book is a compilation of my best stories, I did not win in the contest and so I kept it in the trunk of oblivion, but today I want to share one of the 50 stories that make it up. I hope you enjoy it and comment on it, for me it was a delight to do it and perfect it with the passing of time, this is the short version, I have a longer one.
It was a winter afternoon, in that town far from the city, while on a park bench, two old men were sitting, one with his back to the other, receiving the whisper of inclement coldness of those north winds, both thinking of their first and only love, by ironies of life, she remembers him and he remembers her, believing they are distant, thinking they will never meet, so close and so far, fatality as always interposing, a script that repeats itself between noble souls.
In front of her there is a large tree, which brings back a particular memory, her first kiss, an unforgettable sensation for any being who has fallen in love with the heart, it was right there, leaning against that bark, that she received the keys to passion, her innocence blushed her virginal body, a tear of nostalgia rolls down her cheek, which revives the pain in her guts, a pain that she thought she had forgotten or stopped feeling.
While in front of him, there is a fountain that always seems to murmur, because the constant fall of one statuette to another of the vital liquid, cheers the thirsty birds that walk around there, especially in times of spring, that sound seems to call them to appease their dryness, to his memory comes just the moment in which he met his beloved, he felt a slight stab in his heart, his mind was eclipsed by those green eyes, unique in the world for him, an air of melancholy runs through his body and his eyes moisten, while he sighs with spiritual ailment.

Poor souls, beaten by the human years, but so vital in their longing to love, they want so much to be together, that perhaps that is why they are being separated, so that fate can play as it pleases, with two more puppets of the world, irony is their most collaborating accomplice, mocking everyone, creating stories of misfortune and misfortune, day after day, the die is cast and death gallops behind life, waiting for the carelessness of life, to enter into the game of destiny.
He also remembers the time when he parted from his beloved, it was a summer afternoon on a Thursday, he was sitting right there, where his love had begun, by sarcasm of life, he saw her passing by with another man on her arm, they looked very happy both, He felt so much jealousy mixed with an immense pain, that his heart collapsed externally and internally, he contained his rage and simply walked away forever, heading to the city, today he has returned after 50 years to remember.

To her memory comes the image of the last time she saw him, one summer morning, Wednesday, they met right there, where she was sitting, ironically her first and last kiss of love was in that place, cradle and tomb of her feelings, they talked for a long time then they said goodbye, with a kiss as usual, without even suspecting that it would be the last, the next day her only brother visited her, they had not seen each other for years, they walked around the town arm in arm, she wanted to introduce him to her boyfriend, but she never saw him again.
She returned to the village, after half a century of distance to recall her past, a past that never left her, because throughout her life, she never fell in love again, because that man was judge and executioner in their love story, he did not give himself to another woman, because he could not bear to be betrayed again, even many times he thought of suicide, but his will to live was stronger and he endured, the soul is killed once, the heart is broken and the mark of love is unmistakable, they know it well.
How naive, remembering their joys and sorrows, so many years ago, today that they are next to each other, they cannot recognize each other, maybe and only maybe, if they could see each other's eyes, but that bench separated their lives, being the tombstone of their minds, Their backs bent by the years together with their senile blindness, plus their wrinkled faces, were aggravating for them to distinguish each other, old age is a box of surprises, because of so many lived experiences, we do not know which one will judge us or which one will make fun of us at the end of our days.
The afternoon passed and slowly the prelude of the night was arriving, the cold overwhelmed their worn out bodies, which were not warm enough, they had nowhere to go, they had no living relatives, the few friends they had, which were not counted with the fingers of one hand between them, They lived in the city, in the distant city, the hotel of the town was full, because a politician would give a rally, their childhood friends of both, belonging to that town or were far away in the sky, accompanying their relatives or in other cities unknown to them.
They had gone that particular afternoon to the park, because it was the anniversary of the day they swore eternal love, in those years the word was worth a lot, there was unconditional loyalty, the favor without reward, giving without waiting, the sacred oath, unbreakable, incorruptible, morality above all, In short, she had brought a white rose, his favorite, while he, for his part, brought a red rose, her favorite, those roses symbolized his undoubted love, a love beyond time, beyond the precepts of society, that society that criticizes what it does not understand.

For most people, this enterprise undertaken by these elders was a somewhat quixotic adventure, but for them, it was a sacred duty, to be right there, after 50 years, perhaps it is an inner or higher calling, the truth is that it made them be there, at that precise moment, Their respective solitudes, already bored with life, an absurd life, without purpose, without fun, without joy, without company, with the weight of the years on their backs and what that implies, pain, tiredness, need, lack of food, affection, shelter, in abundance.
Meanwhile, they held their respective roses, remembering the day they swore love to each other, just five decades ago, it is said to be easy but it is not, how many experiences acquired, how many moments spent... They were sitting there too, back then, with the difference that the marble bench was better polished, they intertwined their hands with two roses of the same color and said in unison with their youthful voice:
-"This red rose symbol of love, will be engraved in our souls forever and this white rose, symbol of our virginal purity, is perpetual witness that our bodies, will be ours alone without third parties never, we love each other and we will love each other until eternity, may life never separate us, for if so, death must then unite us in heaven."
In their minds and with trembling lips, they repeated that oath, with a smile of ecstatic satisfaction, with their voices already weak with expiration, squeezing their respective roses, so much so that their thorns pierced the already insensitive skin of their hands, first she and then he said:
-Neither time, nor distance, have erased the great love I feel for you, it was nice to meet you, although you left soon, I have learned that not having you, the rest of my life was, is and will be, just thinking of you. Then she fell asleep...
-It is love that makes the difference in life, the special beings are the ones that make life beautiful, that's what you did my love, yesterday, today and forever, I have never forgotten you, the emptiness you left in me, I have coped with the beautiful moments we spent together. Having said this, he fell asleep...
The night covered the sky with its mantle and the stars took over the firmament, at dawn, those in charge of the maintenance of the park, reported to the authorities the fateful discovery, two corpses of two old people... The most striking thing to the curious was the roses in their hands.

They were taken to the morgue, the forensic doctor was overwhelmed with work, because he was assigned a difficult task, to identify the victims of a fire, this took him time, so he decided only to cut the roses on the stem, which protruded from the stabbed hands of the two elderly homeless, who surely would be buried in a common grave, because no one knew them.
"Why do that autopsy, if no one would care about the result", that irresponsible doctor thought and placed his report at convenience, without even removing the stem with thorns embedded in the hands of those unfortunate, the story of the old men found in the park, began to spread. A reporter published an article criticizing the way the dead were kept and treated in the morgue, which stirred up public opinion.
The politician took advantage of the occasion and gave a speech in the square:
-The poor are always excluded, that is why there is this apathy for politics, but this must change, those old people that nobody knows, must have had a family that may no longer exist, but they are people and deserve a dignified burial, we will make a crypt where it will be read, that lie two beings dignified by a new form of government, which ...
Finally, the dignified burial of the old men was made, as time passed, the tomb was filled with shaded roses, a fusion of two types of that flower, white with red, the species so beautiful and unique of those places, gave rise to many stories of love not known, starring the old men of the park, their bodies were the fertilizer of the blessed rose bush of that town, poems, songs and paintings, were made in honor of their memories, they were finally together, those beings who loved each other all their lives.
