Brother Movie Review ENG - ESP

In a family we are always going to find different types of siblings, it is not possible for two people to be the same even if they are siblings. One may be straight and correct and the other may be the black sheep of the family.

Brothers is not about the good or the bad, it's not the good son and the bad son competing, it's much more simple and complex at the same time. The film is also about what white, straight, clean can be twisted, also about second chances.

Having served in the Afghan war as the best soldier of his class, one upright and honorable citizen begins to suffer the ravages of war once he returns to society. On the contrary, the other who had been a complete disaster in his life, begins to sort out his life after he gets out of prison.

The main characters are played by Tobey Maguire (who is Captain Cahill), married to Grace, played by Natalie Portman (I'm not completely sold on Portman's performance) and the great Jake Gyllenhaal, plays Tommy Cahill.

I have to say that Jake is simply elegant in every performance he has, he is simply a master and although in this film it is Tobey who has the main character and in my opinion one of the best performances of Maguire is overshadowed by Jake that without needing too much makes you go back to see the screen and be attentive to him at all times because in every shot fills the screen with his presence.

It's hard to try to straighten out your life when your family doesn't give you the support you need to put your past behind you and move forward. The father of these two brothers makes no secret of his favoritism, indeed he shows it every chance he gets, that his favorite son is Sam and that Tommy will always be the shadow of his remarkable brother.

Tommy is trying by all means to straighten out his life, sometimes he fails in the attempt, but the good will is there. The news comes that his brother has died in an exercise in Afghanistan, the news shocks everyone in the family and in the community, as the good soldier was known by everyone in the neighborhood.

Tommy tries to personally approach his father, although it only results in fights and discord, Tommy tries to help his brother's widow in a good way, she redoubles her love for her daughters, who will now have to grow up without their father's love by their side. Grace sometimes has very kind gestures with her brother-in-law.

There would be no drama in the movie if there were no unexpected twists and turns. So, we learn that Sam did not die in Afghanistan, but was captured by rebel groups that control the area. In this part of the movie it is really hard and raw truth, we are shown how ruthless the Taliban can be who don't mind killing.

Being captured breaks Sam who in an attempt to survive has to kill a fellow countryman, a family friend and a good man. From then on Sam is never the same, the war changes him and hardens him, he is never again the same attentive father, nor the same kind brother, what he has done with his hands, has marked him for life, the memory haunts him and does not let him be happy.

Sam manages to be rescued and is brought back home, however, his mind remains in Afghanistan. In his homeland he is received as a hero, everyone acclaims him and pays him respect. The scars of war are visible on Sam's skin, but the most dangerous ones are not noticeable and are raw.

Sam has in mind the possibility of an affair between his brother and his wife. This idea haunts him day and night and he even tries to force his brother to accept and confess the infidelity. Sam is no longer in control of himself, he is simply out of his mind, thanks to this instability he offers us one of the most interesting sequences of the whole film.

Undoubtedly Brothers is a great film, which shows how war can damage the mental health of soldiers, even the best soldiers, no one is spared from the horrendous things that can happen in war.

En una familia siempre vamos a encontrar diferentes tipos de hermanos, no es posible que dos personas sean iguales incluso si son hermanos. Puede que uno sea recto y correcto y el otro sea la oveja negra de la familia.

Brothers no se trata del bueno o del malo, no es el hijo bueno y el hijo malo competiendo, es mucho más simple y complejo a la vez. El film también es acerca de lo que blanco, recto, limpio se puede torcer, también acerca de las segundas oportunidades.

Después de haber servido en la guerra de Afganistán el mejor soldado de su clase, un ciudadano correcto y honorable comienza su sufrir los estragos de la guerra una vez que regresa a la sociedad. Por el contrario, el otro que había sido un completo desastre en su vida, empieza a ordenar su vida después que sale de la cárcel.

Los personajes principales son interpretados por Tobey Maguire (quien es el Capitán Cahill), casado con Grace, interpretada por Natalie Portman (no me termina de convencer la actuación de Portman) y el gran Jake Gyllenhaal, interpreta a Tommy Cahill.

Tengo que decir que Jake es simplemente elegante en cada actuación que tiene, es simplemente un maestro y aunque en este film es Tobey el que tiene el personaje principal y a mi parecer una de las mejores performances de Maguire queda opacado por Jake que sin necesitar demasiado hace que volvas a ver la pantalla y que estes atento a él en todo momento pues en cada toma llena la pantalla con su presencia.

Es difícil tratar de enderezar la vida cuando tu familia no te da el apoyo que necesitas para dejar tu pasado atrás y moverte hacia adelante. El padre de estos dos hermanos no oculta en ningún momento su favoritismo, es más lo muestra en cada ocasión en la que tiene la oportunidad, que su hijo favorito es Sam y que Tommy siempre será la sombra de su notable hermano.

Tommy está tratando por todos los medios enderezar su vida, algunas veces falla en el intento, pero la buena voluntad ahí la tiene. Llega la noticia de que su hermano ha muerto en un ejercicio en Afganistán, la noticia desbasta a todos en la familia y en la comunidad, pues el buen soldado era conocido por todos en el vecindario.

Tommy trata de acerca personalmente a su papá, aunque solo resulta en peleas y en discordias, Tommy trata de ayudar de buena manera a la viuda de su hermano, esta redobla en amor por sus hijas, que ahora tendrán que crecer sin el amor de su padre al lado. Grace en algunas ocasiones tiene gestos muy amables con su cuñado.

En la película no habría drama si no hay giros inesperados. Por lo tanto, se sabe que Sam no murió en Afganistán, sino que fue capturados por grupos rebeldes que controlan la zona. En esta parte de la película es realmente dura y cruda la verdad, nos muestran los despiadados que pueden ser los Talibanes a los que nos les importa matar.

El estar capturado rompe a Sam quien en un intento de sobrevivir tiene que matar a un compatriota suyo, un amigo de la familia y un buen hombre. De ahí en adelante Sam no vuelve a ser igual, la guerra lo cambia y lo endurece no vuelve a ser el mismo padre atento, ni el mismo hermano amable, lo que ha hecho con sus manos, lo ha marcado para toda la vida, el recuerdo lo persigue y no lo deja ser feliz.

Sam logra ser rescatado y es traído de vuelta a casa, sin embargo, su mente se queda en Afganistán. En su patria es recibido como un héroe, todos lo aclaman y le rinden respeto. Sam tiene marcado en su cuerpo las cicatrices de la guerra son visibles en la piel de Sam, pero las más peligrosas no son notables y están en carne viva.

Sam tiene en mente la posibilidad de un amorío entre su hermano y su mujer. Esta idea lo persigue día y noche incluso trata de forzar a su hermano para que acepte y confese la infidelidad. Sam ya no tiene control de sí mismo, simplemente esta fuera de sí, gracias a esta inestabilidad nos ofrece una de las secuencias más interesantes de toda la película.

Sin dudas Brother es una gran película, que muestra como la guerra puede dañar la salud mental de los soldados, incluso de los mejores soldados, nadie se salva de las horrendas cosas que pueden ocurrir en la guerra.
