The Dreamer| Spontaneous portraits of my friend created at 2AM.

Last week, two of my friends(Jeremie and Yankee) had a sleep over at my house. They arrived early, and we sort of slept through the evening. Consequently, we were active at night. We cracked jokes, talked, edited photos and played games.

In the midst of those activities, there was the spontaneous urge to create headshots of ourselves. Actually, Yankee and I needed some professional headshots for a brand we were starting. We needed headshots for our "meet the team" profile.

After we were done shooting, before we packed the equipment, Jeremie jumps into the frame and asked that I photographed him before we packed up the equipment. I didn't want to but he was persistent.

In other to fulfill all righteousness, I placed my light in an awkward manner, expecting the results to be bad. "Fortunately", they turned out better than I had expected. After seeing the preview of the first photograph I shot, I became deliberate.

The results were amazing;

Probably the "dreamiest" male portraits I've created so far. I love the falloff of the light on him. Plus his expressions were solid. He's one photographer I know that loves photos of himself. That's because he was a model prior to becoming a photographer.

Breakdown of my light setup.

Over the course of my career as a photographer, I've come to develop a solid light setup for most of the photos I create. On some occasions, I switch it up a bit.
For these photos of Jeremie, I used a light setup that I haven't really tried before. It's actually very basic though.

I used a Godox Ad600 diffused by a 160cm parabolic umbrella. The light is placed on my left, but then it's turned in a way that the light is almost facing my direction. Then he stands facing the rim end of the umbrella. The light falling on his face was basically from the edge of the umbrella. This is evident in the second image. You can see the line of the catch-light on his eyes.

After that session, I concluded that most of the headshots I'll create will be with that light setup.
