Making my 2022 Hive Goals on a Massively Red Day

As the end of January draws near, I thought it'd be nice to pen down my goals on Hive for 2022. Although I feel like goal-setting often doesn't often affect my actions directly, I think it's great to be able to look back at the end of the year to see how close I got to fulfilling those goals. I find that making goals when things seem bad (like today, where both the cryptocurrency and equity market took huge dumps) can help to recalibrate a short-term mindset into one that thinks for the long-term. Without further ado, let's dive right in!

My Current Situation on Hive

My HiveBlocks stats

I joined Hive in December 2021 after discovering a contest that was run on the Gods On Chain community. Through much curation from the OCD team within the community, I managed to amass 409HP and about 374 HBD largely from author rewards. I didn't put in a single cent into Hive other than the 3 dollars I used to open my account from inji.

I honestly do enjoy the community on Hive, so I converted some of my HBD earnings to HP, powering up so that I can support the community better. With the Hive price dipping, I'm also looking to convert some of my HBD into more HP when the time is right.

My Goals in 2022

My HP growth in the last month from HiveStats

When setting goals, I like to keep them simple and realistic. I don't foresee myself being able to continue this rate of HP accumulation indefinitely, so even though this graph might seem to suggest that a 2022 goal of 4000 HP is reasonable, it probably isn't. Given that this is still my first year on Hive, I think a much more reasonable goal would be to hit 2000 HP.

You may say that a goal of 2000 HP is aiming a little low, but I think it's decent enough. Even though I enjoy writing, I don't have a strong background in it and may end up taking breaks from time to time. Being able to write consistently for a month is hard. Doing so for an entire year is 10x harder.

Goals don't mean anything if there's no concrete plan or system set in place. I can't just say that I plan to hit 2000 HP without saying what I plan to do in order to achieve it. My planned system for hitting 2000 HP this year is as follows:

  • Post at least 10 (high-quality) articles a month.
On Hive, a single article of good quality is often rewarded much more handsomely as opposed to many low-quality articles. Consistently writing high-quality articles should also show the community that I'm dedicated to making Hive a better place and am not just milking it for rewards.

  • Engage with other people on Hive whenever I'm on Hive.
Engagement with other people is a form of networking and is essential for growing a following. It helps a lot that most people on the platform are welcoming and don't mind some casual banter and discussion. On most social media platforms, I tend to be more of a lurker rather than an active commenter, so this is something that I'll have to be more conscious about doing.

  • Build stuff on Hive.
A way to attract the eyeballs of Hive to you is to build something for Hive. As a web developer, I think I possess the pre-requisite skills to build a dApp or something for Hive, even if it may just be a simple one. Although I've never done much blockchain development, I want to dip my toes a little here and give a shot at it.

On top of just HP goals, I also aim to build a decent following of at least 100 people by the end of the year. Currently, I have 46 followers. In my opinion, building a following is much harder than just stacking HP since it requires you to consistently write high-quality articles that people are interested in. I tend to post on a variety of topics and I try not to limit myself to just one or two communities. While this may gain me more reach, it also decreases the chance of someone following me since I may post many things that aren't of interest to him.

That being said, I believe that I'll end up having the majority of my posts be about gaming (both blockchain gaming and regular gaming) with a few cryptocurrency posts here and there. These two topics should have enough overlap that the only thing that I need to focus on is to write quality content and engage actively with the communities.

It's Not Just about the Numbers

While these goals that I set for myself are quantifiable, I think that non-quantifiable goals can also be set. For me, my only non-quantifiable goal is to enjoy my time here on Hive. No amount of monetary reward can entice me to do something that is deeply unenjoyable, especially if there's a choice. And I do have a choice of stepping away from Hive any time I want; absolutely no one will miss me when I'm gone.

Making sure that I enjoy my time on Hive simply entails that I engage only with content that I enjoy and writing things that matter to me. And that's what I intend to do for the rest of the year.

Do You Have Any Hive Goals?

I initially didn't want to set any Hive goals since it might seem a little pretentious, coming from someone who just joined the chain a little over a month ago. But I think it's nice to have something to look back on at the end of the year - to see whether I had been overly optimistic or pessimistic, or simply not following through with my plans.

As someone who joined Hive at the same time through the same event, we've had similar trajectories in terms of the initial HP boom we enjoyed as a result of participating in the GU community. That said, I feel like a large part of Hive will eventually be about "finding your people", so to speak.

For me, I'm all about photography, gaming, tabletop, creating, art, etc. I have a very heavy slant towards imaginative work despite the fact that my mind is firmly entrenched in logical thought processes.

Also, there's nothing wrong with putting out "lesser" works in the sense that you have highly "produced" articles and then just little snippets of you, unfiltered. Heck, I have an LMAC post I threw together in a hurry because I loved the concept, I want to revisit that community when I have more time, and it helps serve as a reminder that it's something I want to do.

Here's to hoping you're able to find the communities you most resonate with :)

Yeah, I do think the same way as you mostly - finding a community or people that you resonate with is probably the key to an enjoyable stay on Hive!

Haha, I think since we're still new to Hive in general, it's good to do some "window shopping" like how you participated in LMAC. From what I've seen there's quite a few places you can find and share creative work too, so I hope you'll find a place that you fit in 😄

IMO expression is its own reward in some ways, and I do agree about having "lesser" works amongst more produced works. Even top content creators can't bust out a million dollar budget for each video/article.

All the best in your Hive journey too, I've been enjoying the stuff that you've put out 😄

(Edited)

We have a very similar starting point on hive and I haven't given much thought to my goals yet. I've been wallet watching and looking at people's posts compared to their hive earnings to try and correlate how one affects the other and so far the most common denominator is the number of followers.

I guess the main goal for me is to connect with a lot of people who are passionate regarding the subjects that I write about and also find a way to expand to other communities and find a common interest --- and getting rewarded with $hive is just a natural byproduct of those connections.

Haha yeah for sure, the more followers you have, the more eyeballs you get to your article. Discovery on Hive is... not that great yet, your chance at getting way more views (and similarly, rewards) is largely dictated by whether it gets onto trending. And getting on trending is difficult without a good number of followers.

I think being too fixated on the rewards will eventually lead to a disinterest in Hive, so I think you're onto something there. Putting in large efforts into a post may not yield many rewards, but the pre-requisite to getting larger rewards is to put in the effort. Many of the highly rewarded authors have built up a following and a "brand" over long periods of time such that people know they aren't just in for a quick cash grab. I hope you manage to find more communities on Hive that you connect with! :D
