Do you like a challenging platformer and sexual innuendos in a game? If so, Deepest Sword might just be what you are looking for. It was released as an entry for the Ludum Game Jam in June 2021 and was briefly in the spotlight when many streamers picked it up as a fun in-between game. Your first run of the game is likely to run you less than 30 minutes from start to end, making it a game that's easy to pick up anytime. The best part of it all is that it's free!

The Platforming

Deepest Sword's platforming is somewhat similar to that of Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy although the levels are much simpler and shouldn't cause you too much stress. To get over obstacles and terrain, you do so by rotating your sword like this with the arrow keys:

There are five levels in total, with your sword getting bigger after every level. A larger sword can make it easier to get past certain obstacles but simultaneously make it harder for others. To fully embrace Deepest Sword's gameplay, you have to imagine yourself as the center of a protractor.

As you play the game, you'll get certain tips - like in this case, "A slow fall slips less". If it's your first playthrough, you might find them helpful, although I find them confusing.

At the end of each level, you get to pierce the dragon with your (growing) sword. The first few times you do it, the dragon simply scoffs at the length of your blade and makes a snide remark about it before burning you to ashes. How rude!

The Innuendos

This is the whole point of the game. The entire game is just a metaphor for sex, what with the growing sword sizes, how you drive the sword into the dragon, amongst other things. At the start of the second level, the NPC that brings you back carefully picks his words to convey his mission to you:

In fact, nearly all the text in this game has some sort of innuendo to it - you'll have to play the game to find out. Even the game's description of features on Steam are innuendos.

FEATURES:

• You can't jump but you do have a sword, and you're not afraid to use it!
• Marvel at your sword's length. Though if it's too long, it might get in the way...
• Fulfill your deepest desires (like stabbing a dragon with your sword?)

My Review

I think Deepest Sword is a really neat game that punched above its weight. It was originally created in just 72 hours as an entry to the Ludum Game Jam, showing that fun games can be made in a short amount of time. The time limit of a game jam probably also allowed the game developers to dare to try new things, like making an entire game that was dedicated to the "haha sex" innuendos despite it being ridiculous.

The game was well-made with no bugs that I could find - the game was definitely limited in scope but that was also what made it possible to be bug-free in such a short amount of time.

At the very attractive price point of free, I think anyone who enjoys a light-hearted afternoon of platforming and childish innuendos should try this out! I'm sure you won't regret it.
