Topic: “Tips for Saving the Environment”

Sometimes I walk through my streets here in Venezuela and feel a mix of frustration and hope. It's easy to get discouraged when you see that recycling seems distant or foreign to our daily lives. However, I've learned that we can't wait for solutions to come from above; real change starts in my kitchen, in my classroom, and on the sidewalk of my block.

I try to teach my children that a bottle isn't trash, but a resource for a school project or a planter for our garden. I'm teaching them to value what they have. I don't overwhelm them with a lecture about global warming; instead, I look for ways to show them the magic of turning organic waste into compost for our own food.

With my students, the focus is on purpose. I ask them, "Do we want to see our beaches full of plastic, or would we rather turn those cans into resources to improve our classroom?" When they see that their effort has a real benefit, like raising funds for an activity or simply seeing their space cleaner, their mindset changes. They stop being spectators and become active participants. And that's the idea: to make learning a meaningful experience.

I always tell my community the same thing: cleanliness is health and the economy. An organized community that sorts its waste is a community that attracts prosperity. I know the road is long and infrastructure is lacking, but every bottle that doesn't end up in the landfill is a victory. My invitation today is simple: don't do it because it's trendy, do it because our country deserves citizens who take care of it. Let's start little by little, but let's start now. I believe it's essential to be aware of the importance of preserving our environment and to teach others to do the same. That would be my contribution.

Es fácil desanimarse cuando ves que la cultura del reciclaje parece algo lejano o ajeno a nuestra rutina. Trato de enseñarles a mis hijos que una botella no es basura, sino un recurso para un proyecto escolar o un macetero para nuestro jardín, les estoy enseñando a valorar lo que tienen. No los agobio con un discurso sobre el calentamiento global, sino que busco la manera de mostrarles la magia de convertir desechos orgánicos en abono para nuestros propios alimentos.

Con mis estudiantes, el enfoque es el propósito. Les pregunto: “¿Queremos ver nuestras playas llenas de plástico o preferimos convertir esas latas en recursos para mejorar nuestro salón?”. Cuando ven que su esfuerzo tiene un beneficio real, como recaudar fondos para una actividad o simplemente ver su espacio más limpio, su mentalidad cambia. Dejan de ser espectadores y se convierten en protagonistas. Y esa es la idea hacer del aprendizaje un momento significativo.

A mi comunidad le digo siempre lo mismo: la limpieza es salud y economía. Un sector organizado que clasifica sus desechos es un sector que atrae bienestar. Sé que el camino es largo y que faltan infraestructuras, pero cada botella que no llega al vertedero es una victoria. Mi invitación hoy es sencilla: no lo hagas porque sea una moda, hazlo porque nuestro país merece ciudadanos que lo cuiden. Empecemos poco a poco, pero empecemos ya. Creo que es esencial ser consientes de la importancia de preservar nuestro ambiente y enseñar a los demás a hacerlo. Ese sería mi granito de arena.
