Exploring Lefkada town

It has been a while already since we went exploring the Greek island of Leskas, where the capital city of Lefkada-town was ofcourse not to be missed for a night on the town.

I don't specifically enjoy cities that much too see what is going on, but I do very much enjoy wandering around a bit hunting for the best restaurant to check out some decent food.

What very often is with capitals is that they have been taken over entirely for touristy stuff, and it is really hard to see in between what the old city actually was like. There is always a part in the town that is like the modern centre with all shopping shops which are the same in every city.

The quest in these town is to find the small streets with the weird stuff in there. And luckily we found some!

We had dinner in a small diner where you choose inside from the cabinet what they have day fresh in store. A sweet concept because the menu changes all the time and you get more seasonal products. It was weird sitting here, there was a lot of movement als also at some point some roof started to leak dumping water on a passing guy. People looked up, shook their heads..and moved on. Welcome to Greece!

Boats

Lefkada town is the first city you run into when entering the island. The ownly option to reach the island is by boat or by going over the ponton bridge which opens every hour.

Lefkada town also has a big harbour there which is not the only harbour around. A couple of years back also the harbour of Preveza which is on the mainland has started to grow a lot. Since it is closer by the airport and also you do not need to cross the ponton bridge this harbour is getting more and more popular.

Although the Preveza harbour is also there, on Saturdays when it is often changing day for the boats the traffic in town is a disaster because of the bridge. A guy told us that in high season it can take you up to two hours before you reach the island because of the bridge.

Check out this cheeky little rainbow in the back there!

Speaking of the ponton bridge. Passing through the channel by boat there including waiting for a bit until it opened with high winds from the side was surely one of my most stressful boating experiences up until now!

The future

Lefkada is surely working on their futureproof situation with plans of digging a tunnel underneith the channel to make traffic go a lot easier. Convenient, but it also might take away a bit of the charm of the island.

The island in general is very tranquil and doesn't have a lot of big hotels but just small guest houses. This attracts a different kind of visiting population and actually that isn't too bad at all.

The tunnel would also divert the traffic aroudn Lefkada town which also isn't a bad thing because of the small streets, but on the other hand..you would miss out on these kinds of awesome small bridges.

Another new thingy of the city. Making a walking promenade in the water. Just walking...nothing else. I'm digging the idea!

I think in a couple of years the city of Lefkada town might look very different compared to how it is now. And if this will be a good or a bad thing, I'm not really sure about it.

For now this was a super nice and easy small town with good views and also very decent roads to get to a neighbouring town. My advice is you visit it here: Stay in a different town and visit the capital a day or an evening. You will be fine with just that!
