Wednesday Walk: meeting temple cats, เดินเล่นเจอแมววัด

These past few days have been quite a test of patience and understanding of reality. Things are moving much faster and with more forceful pressure. Though the four months lockdown has ended, oppressive conditions have been imposed on ordinary people and the pointless curfew is still on. So, businesses are being hurt badly and more people have suffered from jab injuries. Some politicians and actors are still fighting over drug expediting budgets and to protect their interests. Meanwhile most people are controlled by daily fear mongering techniques; only a small group of people have started alternative channels of communication about the hidden agenda and information blocked by the authority. So, I would take any opportunity I could to walk around the old part of Bangkok and take photos for my souvenir. The realisation of living in precarious time has made each moment very precious to me.

I went on a search for some traditional Thai herbal balm and medicine near Prachan Pier which used to be a well known market for traditional medicine. But I was quite disappointed as most shops remained closed under the lockdown as people were reluctant to travel for fear of catching the coronavirus. I found two small shops selling several kinds of ointments and balms so I bought two small bottles from each shop to show some support. The road was very quiet with occasional traffic while a few people braved themselves at the bus stop.

I spotted a small alley leading to a local community of people who have been living along the riverbank since their grandparent generations. Their houses used to be small shacks built on stilts by the river and they would have small rowing boats tied to poles. The enormous trunk of banyan tree at the alley indicated that this tree must have been there since the construction of Bangkok as the new capital city for the new dynasty of King Rama I, almost three hundred years ago.

The temple across the road had its door opened for the public. So, I crossed over to explore the old temple called Wat Mahathad which was the first temple constructed by King Rama I. This was the first temple that offered free meditation classes to both Thai and foreigners. The first formal Buddhist education system for monks was originally established and taught by learned monks in this temple. So, historically this temple could be called the first university in Siam.

I walked around the old buildings which are quarters for monks living inside the temple. Monks from far away provinces could applied for a residence and a place in the education programs but there is fierce competition among applicants. I guessed there would be some kind of entrance examinations. The quiet atmosphere and nice surroundings there would be ideal for studying and practicing meditation.

I was quite surprised to see several cats and kittens along the narrow footpath. Some cats were so timid and jumpy while some were friendly towards me. Some monks there must have been feeding these cats as they all looked healthy and happy. I saw a monk tending to plot plants, so I kept my distance and took some photos before I got thrown off the monks’ quarter. The old buildings were solid with heavy wooden doors. I hoped they would never demolish the old architecture to build high rise modern buildings to house more monks and novices.

เราไปตามหายาสมุนไพรไทยโบราณที่แถวท่าพระจันทร์ เรารู้ว่าแถวนั้นเป็นถิ่นเก่าแก่ของหมอไทยแผนโบราณ และการรักษาด้วยการนวดแผนโบราณ เราจึงไปหาซื้อยาหม่อมสมุนไพร เช่น ไพร เสลดพังพอน และหากระชายเม็ดมาเก็บไว้ใช้ในยามต้องการ แต่เราเจอร้านเปิดอยู่แค่สองร้าน ถนนแถวนั้นก็เงียบมาก ร้านส่วนใหญ่ยังปิดกันหมด ที่ป้ายรถเมล์มีคนคอยรถอยู่ไม่ถึงสิบคน สภาพบ้านเมืองเปลี่ยนแปลงจนน่าใจหาย เราก็เดินดูบรรยากาศไปเรื่อยเปื่อย จนเราไปสังเกตเห็นทางเข้าชุมชนโบราณที่อยู่ริมน้ำ ตรงทางเข้ามีต้นไม้ขนาดใหญ่มาก คงมีอายุมากกว่าร้อยหรือสองร้อยปี ลำต้นมีขนาดใหญ่มาก เหมือนเป็นกำแพงไปแล้ว เราก็รีบถ่ายรูปไว้ดูเล่นทันที

เราเดินเงียบๆ ไปตามทางเดินในวัดมหาธาตุ ซึ่งเป็นวัดแรกที่สร้างโดยรัชกาลที่1 และเป็นวัดแรกที่เปรียบเสมือนมหาวิทยาลัยแห่งแรกในสยาม วัดนี้เป็นแหล่งเรียบรู้ของพระสงฆ์ในสมัยก่อน ทำให้อ่านออกเขียนได้ และมีความรู้ในคำสอนของพระพุทธเจ้า พระจะเล่าเรียนภาษาบาลี และพระอภิธรรม คำสอนในพระไตรปิฏก และมีการสอบเทียบความรู้จากเปรียญระดับล่างจนถึงประโยคเก้า หรือเปรียญ9 และวัดมหาธาตุมีชื่อเสียง ด้านการสอนการนั่งสมาธิให้คนทั่วไป ทั้งคนไทยและชาวต่างชาติ

สมัยก่อนชาวต่างชาติมาเรียนนั่งสมาธิที่วัดมหาธาตุหลายคน จนวัดมีชื่อเสียงมาก และฝรั่งเหล่านี้ก็ไปบวชเป็นพระที่วัดป่าในอีสาน ผ่านมาหลายปีพระฝรั่งก็กลายเป็นเจ้าอาวาสวัดไทยในต่างแดนก็หลายรูป นับว่าเป็นการเผยแพร่พระพุทธศาสนาไปทั่วโลก วัดป่าของพระอาจารย์ชาก็ดังไปทั่วโลก เพราะลูกศิษย์วัดไปตั้งวัดไทยในหลายประเทศ แต่ตอนนี้การสอนนั่งสมาธิที่วัดก็ต้องหยุดไปก่อน. เราชอบตึกเก่าๆโบราณๆ ที่สร้างมากว่าร้อยปีที่นั่นมาก ประตูไม้สมัยก่อนมีบานใหญ่มาก ทำจากไม้สักทั้งแผ่น เราก็หวังว่าเขาคงจะอนุรักษ์สถาปัตยกรรมเก่าๆไว้ เราภาวนาว่าทุกอย่างจะค่อยๆคลี่คลายไปในทางที่ดีขึ้นตามกาลเวลา
