[Let's Play] Starfield, part one

I thought that when the Cyberpunk 2077 2.0 update released I'd be all over it. I was wrong. It turns out I'm really not in the mood for busting scavs and rummaging around for eddies with Keanu Reeves smack-talking me. But flying around in a spaceship and exploring the galaxy? That, I'm feeling.

I've played Starfield quite substantially over the past couple of weeks, and I feel comfortable enough with it now to make a new character and begin a Ye Olde Story post!

Yeehaw! Here we go! (if you didn't hear that in FFX's Cid's voice... then I don't know what to tell you.)

image.png

It all begins on a moon orbiting the planet Vectera. Our protagonist, Elsie, was shipped off to a mining outpost to begin her new dusty life as a member of the Argos Mining Company. Due to a series of unfortunate events, the days of being a savvy business-woman lay long behind her — it was just her and the dirt now.

She would think no more of the life she used to lead.

image.png

On her first day Lin, Elsie's new boss, had a special task for her. There was an anomalous reading deep within the mine — a reading that made Lin suspect a strange artifact lay within, distorting everything — and she wanted Elsie to retrieve it.

There was a buyer interested in it and he would be there soon, they just needed it first.

image.png

How hard could it be? Heller, Lin's second-in-command, seemed weirded out by the distortions and strange readings, but Elsie didn't much care. She was here to do a job, she was getting paid to do the job, and she would retrieve this artifact and get her money.

image.png

However, the very moment she stumbled across the artifact... everything changed.

She reached out to grab it and as her hands met the cool metal, an orchestra screamed through her mind and behind her blackening vision she saw glimpses of colourful galaxies zooming faster and faster, spinning around and 'round, until all she could see was the light of a trillion stars staring directly at her.

She passed out.

image.png

When she came to, several hours had passed.

Heller and Lin were looking over Elsie in the infirmary, worried about whatever had caused Elsie to black out. Apparently she was physically fine, but they were worried about her mental health... she was fine, wasn't she?

Elsie shrugged. She felt fine. She climbed to her feet. She wasn't woozy at all, it was as though she had awoken from a short nap.

image.png

There wasn't any time to conduct any more tests on Elsie to make certain she really was sound of mind. An alarm beeped throughout the facility, informing them that a spaceship was on approach.

Lin sighed. The buyer was here. It was time to deliver the artifact and get paid.

image.png

It seemed that Lin and the buyer knew one another, not that she seemed overly pleased to see him. His name was Barrett and he was a member of Constellation, the old group of explorer's that Elsie assumed had disbanded decades prior.

That was unexpected. What was more unexpected was Barrett asking her if she had felt anything strange when she picked up the artifact... like lights, music, delusions of grandeur... Elsie cocked an eyebrow. Indeed she had. How on earth had he known?

image.png

Barrett nodded knowingly then turned to Lin. He was taking Elsie to Constellation. Thanks to her experience, she was now a part of this mystery that lay before them.

Before anyone could say anything, another alarm rang out across the complex. More spaceships were descending at an alarming rate... Barrett smiled uneasily. "The pirates have followed me," he said.

image.png

Lin cast a withering glare over at Barrett then directed everyone to get into position. The ship landed and a group of pirates quickly emerged, weapons firing.

After the firefight though, all the pirates lay dead and all the miners, Elsie, and Barrett were safe.

image.png

A robot emerged from beneath the shadow of Barrett's ship. Barrett referred to the robot as Vasco and told it to take Elsie and the ship to Constellation.

He would stay with Lin and thwart off any further pirate attacks... after all, he was the reason they were there.

image.png

Elsie was confused. This was all happening so quickly. This was her first day as a miner, she had collected a strange artifact, experienced the trip of her life and passed out, talked to a member of a group thought disbanded long ago, was beset upon by pirates, and was now leaving on a ship with a robot to speak with more members of this long-disbanded group.

What a day!

Barrett didn't seem willing to give her any answers, like just what the hell this artifact was and why was Constellation still around anyway? Maybe she'd find more answers once the robot took her to these people.

Waving a half-hearted farewell to Lin, Elsie boarded the spaceship with Vasco the Robot at her back, and prepared to embark on this new journey.

Until next time!! 😊🔥🚀
