Introducing: Tiffany the Tortoiseshell Kitty Cat

avatar

It was a few months ago: I saw an ad in the local newspaper showcasing a couple of animals from the local animal refuge. One of the animals showcased was a cat named Tiffany who'd had an interesting life...

Once a kitten bought from a pet shop, she had been handed over to random family from random family, never really settling into a home, until one day her irresponsible owner-at-the-time realised she was pregnant and dumped her on a neighbour willing to look after mumma-cat and kittens.

After that, this neighbour took Tiffany and her kittens to the animal refuge to help find them new homes. Most of the kittens were soon adopted — when we went to visit there were three left from the nine-kitten litter, and Tiffany herself.

My partner and I have been umming and ahhing about getting another cat for a while now. Two cats are better than one and Charlie Cat would do really well with a friend! So I finally bit the bullet and asked our real estate if we could have another pet.

Queue annoyance after annoyance.

Due to the slackening in Queensland Rental Pet laws, tenants have more rights than ever when it comes to pet ownership... but, of course, because of that, now real estates reeeeeeally try and make you work for what you desire.

I had to do everything arse-backwards.

I couldn't just ask if we were allowed another cat and then look for one, no.

What I had to do was: I had to find a cat I was interested in, apply for it, then get approval from the real estate for that specific cat with all of its up-to-date information. AND. Because we're dealing with refuges and rescues, obviously there are no holds allowed on the pets due to them wanting to find homes as soon as possible. So I had to hope that the real estate actioned it as soon as possible (legally they have two weeks to respond. If they don't respond in that time, it's an automatic 'yes.').

The real estate's method makes absolutely no sense to me.

What's so difficult about asking the home owner first if we could have another pet, giving us approval, then finding out all the specific details about the pet after we adopt it?

Long story short: after an idiotic process, we now have another cat! 😻

Tiffany was still available at our local refuge after being there for a good three or four months. And now she's settling into her new forever home after her very eventful two years of life.

Charlie is very, very curious towards our new friend. He's not aggressive or territorial at all and just wants to get to know Tiffany; she, on the other hand, is calm and curious about her new surroundings but is understandably slightly on edge that there's an unfamiliar cat around.

She is very affectionate towards us humans which is nice because Charlie is definitely not. It's nice to pat a cat that actually wants pats and doesn't just tolerate them. 😅 She purrs, she stretches up into your hand, she loves being brushed, held, patted. She's the polar opposite of Charlie affection-wise and is just gorgeous.

So far she seems to be settling in very, very well. 😊 And I'm confident that her and Charlie will be best friends very soon!

💕😻❤️

Until next time!

Lovely cat! I'm sure Charlie will learn to be affectionate after going to observe Tiffany for a while. 😅

Thanks! 😁 That's my hope, haha! That he witnesses her actually liking to be patted and decides that maybe he would like that too... but I don't know — he's 4 years old now, he might just be set in his ways. 😅

Or maybe Charlie will be "bossy" and teach her the ways, oh no! 😅

She definitely looks like she's settling in well! I am so allergic to cats, but make an exception for my adorable little furball.

I will be forever doomed to white cats (As they put out the least of the allergen that triggers me)

But I love ginger ninjas and torties, too!

😅 My partner is allergic to cats, too. He lives on antihistamines and when they stopped working quite so well we got air purifiers in every room. That did the trick! At least it's not a huge allergy. 😬 Which I'm very grateful for. I love kitty cats. Can't imagine a house without them!

Air purifiers are secretly the MVP, too. Have one in the bedroom and one in the study. I think it would be bordering on irresponsible to put one in the lounge too. They're handy, amazing devices!

Aww poor thing, being stuck in a shelter for four months, but atleast she has a nice new home and loving family. I'm sure once they settle in, the two cats will be great friends!

They're definitely getting on a lot quicker than I thought they would. 😅 I'm waiting for the morning where I stumble out of the bedroom and into the loungeroom only to find them cuddled up sleeping together. 😁

Oh that's lovely. She's peachy. I thought all tortoise shells were male, but apparently not! Enjoy your loving new housemate.

Most gingers are male, but most calicos and tortoiseshells are female 😊 There was a female ginger kitten at the refuge too... I was shocked!! That's so rare! But one ginger is enough for me, haha. And I was there to look at the older cats, not the kittens.

It looks like your kitties like to have intense staring contests. 😸

They've got no choice but to have staring contests! 😅 He's trying to be friendly and she's just... stares at Charlie from up on high to prove she's the more dominant cat.
