[ENG-ESP] Asleep under the dust

This is the first time I post here. I had been thinking for some time about what I could share with you and I think I have found a topic that you may find interesting.

Es la primera vez que publico aquí. Tenía tiempo pensando qué podía compartir con ustedes y me parece que he encontrado un tema que puede resultarles interesante.

In Venezuela, following the arrival of the pandemic, public establishments have suffered the consequences of neglect. In the middle of last year, for example, in school playgrounds, the grass had grown so tall that it exceeded one meter in height.

The Naguanagua Public Library was no exception. It closed its doors in March 2020 and reopened them in May of this year. In little more than two years, the general and children's rooms accumulated kilos of dust, while the books slept and the fungus grew between the pages of hundreds of copies.

Today I want to tell you about the maintenance of both spaces -the general room and the children's room-, the precariousness we deal with in the library and my role in this story.

En Venezuela, tras la llegada de la pandemia, los establecimientos públicos han sufrido las consecuencias del abandono. A mediados del año pasado, por ejemplo, en los patios de las escuelas, la hierba había crecido tanto que sobrepasaba el metro de altura.

La Biblioteca Pública de Naguanagua no fue la excepción. Cerró sus puertas en marzo de 2020 y las reabrió en mayo de este año. En poco más de dos años, las salas general e infantil acumularon kilos de polvo, mientras los libros dormían y los hongos crecían entre las páginas de cientos de ejemplares.

Hoy quiero contarles cómo ha sido el mantenimiento de ambos espacios —la sala general y la infantil—, la precariedad con la que lidiamos en la biblioteca y mi papel en esta historia.

I have been a user of the library since I moved to Naguanagua, about four years ago, at the end of 2018. From the first moment I visited the precinct, I was amazed with the amount of books I had at my fingertips, because in Barrera, Campo de Carabobo, the place where I grew up, there are no libraries. Somehow, I passed on my enthusiasm to one of the librarians and became fast friends with her. As the days went by, I became a frequent user and soon after I got a library card —current loan— that allowed me to take books home.

He sido usuario de la biblioteca desde que me mudé a Naguanagua, hace unos cuatro años, a finales de 2018. Desde el primer momento que visité el recinto, quedé sorprendido con la cantidad de libros que tenía al alcance de mi mano, pues en Barrera, Campo de Carabobo, el lugar donde crecí, no hay bibliotecas. De algún modo, contagié mi entusiasmo a una de las bibliotecarias y me hice amigo de ella rápidamente. Con el pasar de los días, me volví un usuario frecuente y poco tiempo después saqué el carnet —préstamo circulante— que me permitió llevar libros para la casa.

By mid 2019 I was no longer a stranger and soon I found myself collaborating with some things that were needed in the place, such as repairing the padlock on the main door, which had been damaged by thieves; at that time thefts were frequent and the library was not exempt from them

A mediados de 2019 ya no era un extraño y pronto me vi colaborando con algunas cosas que necesitaban en el lugar, como la reparación del candado de la puerta principal, que habían dañado unos ladrones; en aquella época los robos eran frecuentes y la biblioteca no estaba exenta de ellos.

After the arrival of the pandemic, everything took a 360° turn. Apart from being a writer, I am a computer technician, and thanks to the confinement and the economic changes that took place in the country, this work declined a lot. But that was not the only blow. The library closed its doors in March 2020 and did not reopen them until May of this year, as I said before.

Tras la llegada de la pandemia, todo dio un giro de 360°. Aparte de escritor, soy técnico de computadoras, y gracias al confinamiento y los cambios económicos que hubo en el país, este trabajo decayó bastante. Pero ese no fue el único golpe. La biblioteca cerró sus puertas en marzo de 2020 y no volvió a abrirlas hasta mayo de este año, como dije anteriormente.

During that time, I went more than once to the Casa de la Cultura de Naguanagua, where the library is located, to ask when the library would reopen and what had become of the librarians' lives. Nobody knew how to give me answers, until at the beginning of this year, after so much insistence, I got the coordinator's number and contacted her.

Durante ese tiempo, fui más de una vez a la Casa de la Cultura de Naguanagua, donde se encuentra la biblioteca, para preguntar cuándo se reabriría y qué había sido de la vida de las bibliotecarias. Nadie supo darme respuestas, hasta que a principios de este año, después de tanta insistencia, conseguí el número de la coordinadora y la contacté.

In this way, I learned that the place had not been opened even once since 2020. Therefore, in order to open the doors to the public, maintenance had to be done. The first thing we did was to meet, one of the librarians, the coordinator and I to talk about the matter.

As usual, they did not have the necessary resources or the right personnel to get down to work. So I offered to help them. I got gloves for the job and they bought the cleaning products. We agreed on a date and time to start the maintenance.

De esta forma, me enteré que el lugar no había sido abierto ni una sola vez desde el 2020. Por lo tanto, para poder abrir las puertas al público, había que hacer mantenimiento. Lo primero que hicimos fue reunirnos, una de las bibliotecarias, la coordinadora y yo para hablar sobre el asunto.

Como de costumbre, ellas no contaban con los recursos necesarios ni el personal indicado para ponerse manos a la obra. Entonces me ofrecí a ayudarlas. Conseguí guantes para dicha labor y ellas compraron los productos de limpieza. Así acordamos la fecha y la hora para empezar con el mantenimiento.

I confess that it has not been easy. It took us almost two months to clean the whole place, including the children's room, because we only saw each other on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Besides, it was a dangerous task, due to the amount of dust and the fungus that the books had (fungus that we have not been able to eliminate completely), so we proceeded with caution. On one occasion, we had the help of another user and got a lot of work done. In the end, against all odds, we completed the task and left both spaces clean.

Confieso que no ha sido fácil. Nos llevó casi dos meses limpiar todo el lugar, incluyendo la sala infantil, porque solamente nos veíamos los martes y jueves. Además, era una labor peligrosa, debido a la cantidad de polvo y el hongo que tenían los libros (hongo que no hemos podido eliminar por completo), por lo que procedimos con precaución. En una ocasión, contamos con la ayuda de otro usuario y adelantamos bastante trabajo. Al final, contra todo pronóstico, llevamos a cabo la tarea y dejamos limpios ambos espacios.

Today, I am very proud of what we did. My love for books and the written word has grown immeasurably in recent months, so much so that I am now aspiring to a position as an employee of the library and since then I have not stopped attending the place, nor working as a collaborator, learning everything necessary along the way, such as inventorying books, providing information to users, promoting reading and taking care of the service we provide.

Hoy en día me siento muy orgulloso de lo que hicimos. Mi amor por los libros y la palabra escrita ha crecido desmesuradamente los últimos meses, tanto así, que ahora estoy aspirando a un cargo como empleado de la biblioteca y desde entonces no he dejado de asistir al lugar, ni de trabajar como colaborador, aprendiendo todo lo necesario en el camino, como ha sido el inventariar libros, facilitar información a los usuarios, promover la lectura y cuidar el servicio que prestamos.

But not everything is rosy in this life. In order to continue with my work, I have turned down jobs that would significantly improve my economic situation, despite what I told you about the decline of computer technical service. Attending from Monday to Friday, every morning, sometimes staying in the afternoons to attend a chess workshop to which we lend the space of the children's room, without receiving any economic benefit, has generated strong criticism from several of my family and friends, who still do not understand that I do not do this for money.

Pero no todo es color rosa en esta vida. Para seguir con mi labor, he rechazado trabajos que mejorarían notablemente mi situación económica, a pesar de lo que les comenté sobre la decadencia del servicio técnico de computadoras. Asistir de lunes a viernes, todas las mañanas, quedándome a veces por las tardes para atender un taller de ajedrez al que le prestamos el espacio de la sala infantil, sin recibir ningún tipo de beneficio económico, ha generado fuertes críticas por parte de varios de mis familiares y amigos, quienes aún no comprenden que no hago esto por dinero.

However, when I worked elsewhere, I was unhappy. I even thought life was meaningless. Because of this, I never felt comfortable anywhere and went from job to job, convinced that none of them were for me. With the library, in contrast, everything has been different. I feel very good working there and for me that's enough. I can get the money some other way.

Sin embargo, cuando trabajaba en otros lugares, era infeliz. Incluso pensaba que la vida carecía de sentido. Gracias a esto, nunca me sentí cómodo en ninguna parte y fui de trabajo en trabajo, convencido de que ninguno era para mí. Con la biblioteca, en cambio, todo ha sido diferente. Me siento muy bien trabajando allí y para mí eso es suficiente. El dinero puedo conseguirlo de otra manera.

Currently, we are still taking inventory of books, doing some activities in the schools of Naguanagua and lending the space of the children's room to the chess workshop that I told you about; but I hope to be able to tell you more about this later. For now, I say goodbye and thank you for coming here. The photos I have shared with you are from those days when we were doing the maintenance.

Actualmente, seguimos haciendo inventario de libros, realizando algunas actividades en las escuelas de Naguanagua y prestando el espacio de la sala infantil al taller de ajedrez que les comenté; pero de esto espero poder hablarles más adelante. Por ahora, me despido y agradezco que hayan llegado hasta acá. Las fotos que les he compartido, son de esos días en los que hacíamos el mantenimiento.
