[ENG-SPN] The Secret of Liébana / El Secreto de Liébana

It began as another of those cultural beacons nestled in the shadowy darkness of a fertile and idyllic valley, protected on all sides by those metaphorical sleeping titans, the supernatural Picos de Europa: the monastery of Santo Toribio de Liébana.

It wasn't always called that, for in its origins it was dedicated to the figure of that 'thunderbolt dressed as a Nazarene'—to paraphrase Machado—who was a soldier, a bishop, and finally a hermit, disillusioned when the Church, in the 4th century, committed its first political crime in the figure of Priscillian, whose ghost has never ceased to haunt the enigmatic solitudes of Compostela: Saint Martin of Tours.

Today, it remains the heart of one of the most challenging yet rewarding pilgrimage routes a pilgrim can undertake. Disembarking at the nearby ports along the Cantabrian coast, they ascend through the gorges carved by the mythical Deva River on its journey to the sea, carrying with them the message of safeguarding the largest known fragment of the True Cross.

Comenzó siendo otro de esos faros culturales recogido en las umbrías oscuridades de un valle fértil y feliz, protegido por los cuatro costados por esos metafóricos titanes dormidos, que son, desde luego, los sobrenaturales Picos de Europa: el monasterio de Santo Toribio de Liébana.

No siempre se llamó así, pues en sus orígenes estaba dedicado a la figura de aquel ‘trueno vestido de Nazareno’ -parafraseando a Machado- que fue militar, obispo y finalmente eremita, decepcionado cuando la Iglesia, en el siglo IV, cometió su primer crimen político en la figura de Prisciliano, cuyo fantasma nunca ha dejado de rondar las enigmáticas soledades de Compostela: San Martín de Tours.

En la actualidad, continúa siendo el corazón de una de las rutas de peregrinación más duras, pero a la vez, más gratificantes que puede recorrer cualquier peregrino, que, desembarcando en los vecinos puertos del Cantábrico, asciende por los desfiladeros que va esculpiendo el mitológico río Deva en su camino hacia el mar, llevando consigo el mensaje de la custodia del mayor fragmento conocido de la Vera Cruz.
