[ENG-SPN] The Romanesque Secrets of San Pedro de Villanueva / Los Secretos Románicos de San Pedro de Villanueva
From those times at the end of the 19th century, thanks to the surprising artistic skills of a peculiar character of German origin, Roberto Frassinelli, who, enamored with Asturias, decided to retire to these solitudes near the Picos de Europa mountains, where he bathed in glacial lakes, we have some evidence of many of those ancient Romanesque structures, lost, for the most part, not so much by the inexorable passage of time, but by that Cain-like desire of man to destroy his heritage.
Even in those times, Asturias boasted around a hundred similar architectural structures, distributed among hermitages, churches, and monasteries, exceeding one hundred in total. One of the few survivors is this unique monastery of San Pedro, located near the historic town of Cangas de Onís, the birthplace of the first Asturian monarchies, on this side of the banks of the Sella River, whose lively waters still provide the backdrop for one of the most popular festivals in the Principality of Asturias: the Canoe Festival.
Reconverted into the modern Parador de Cangas de Onís, the old monastery of San Pedro de Villanueva preserves, in its ancient surviving stones, not only details of meticulous sculpture, where history and legend generously intertwine, but also the archetypes, biases, virtues, and conditioning factors that characterized a medieval society that did not always manage to replace its ancestral beliefs, and where the anonymous stonemasons masterfully framed them within the new narrative.
De aquellos tiempos de finales del siglo XIX en los que, gracias a las sorprendentes habilidades artísticas de un peculiar personaje de origen alemán, que, enamorado de Asturias decidió retirarse en estas soledades aledañas a unos Picos de Europa, en cuyos lagos glaciares se bañaba, Roberto Frassinelli, tenemos algunos testimonios de muchas de aquellas antiguas arquitecturas románicas, perdidas, en su gran mayoría, no tanto por el paso inexorable del tiempo, como por ese afán cainita del hombre para destruir su patrimonio.
Todavía en aquellos tiempos, en Asturias se localizaba la existencia de un centenar de semejantes arquitecturas, que, distribuidas entre ermitas, iglesias y monasterios superaba el centenar, siendo uno de los pocos sobrevivientes, este singular monasterio de San Pedro, situado en las inmediaciones de la histórica villa de Cangas de Onís, lugar, por defecto, que albergó a las primeras monarquías asturianas, a este lado de la ribera de un río, el Sella, cuyas alegres aguas sirven de marco todavía para la celebración de una de las fiestas más populares del Principado de Asturias: la Fiesta de las Piragüas.
Reconvertido en el moderno Parador de Cangas de Onís, el viejo monasterio de San Pedro de Villanueva, conserva, en sus milenarias piedras sobrevivientes, no sólo detalles de una escultura esmerada, en cuyo relato historia y leyenda se dan generosamente la mano, sino también, los arquetipos, sesgos, virtudes y acondicionamientos que caracterizaron a una sociedad medieval que no siempre alcanzó a sustituir sus ancestrales creencias y donde los anónimos canteros tuvieron la maestría de saber enmarcarlas en el marco del nuevo relato.
