[ENG-SPN] The Goddess Beneath Saint Anthony / La Diosa bajo San Antón

Her dwelling is traditionally located in a cave high on what is probably the most sacred and charismatic mountain in the Basque Country: Amboto. But her gaze, from the other side of that supernatural veil of Isis to which occult currents always allude, extends to every corner, including a coastline whose fragmented morphology seems to date back to that antediluvian time when the Titans reigned over the face of the earth.

We speak of Andra Mari, the quintessential Mother Goddess and, moreover, the most important figure in the Basque mythological pantheon, whose presence, linked, of course, to worship, can be found in the most unexpected places and even in Christian churches, which, in addition to being under her patronage, also venerate her in the popular form of a Black Madonna.

One such representation can be found in one of Bilbao's oldest and most charismatic churches: the Church of San Antón. Located beside the estuary, not far from the old market and the seven streets that make up the old town, at the heart of which stands one of Spain's smallest, yet no less interesting, cathedrals—the Cathedral of Santiago—the figure of Andra Mari still exerts its timeless magnetism, regardless of its association with a figure whose cult did not begin to take off until well into the 12th century: the Virgin Mary.

Su morada se localiza, tradicionalmente, en una cueva situada en las alturas del que probablemente sea el monte más sagrado y carismático de Euskalerría: el Amboto. Pero su mirada, desde la otra parte de ese sobrenatural velo de Isis al que aluden siempre las corrientes ocultistas, se extiende por todos los rincones, incluida una costa, cuya fragmentada morfología parece remontarse a aquel tiempo antediluviano en el que reinaban los Titanes sobre la faz de la tierra.

Hablamos de Andra Mari, la Diosa Madre por antonomasia y por añadidura, la figura más importante del panteón mitológico vasco, cuya presencia, unida, por supuesto, al culto, la podemos encontrar en los lugares más insospechado e incluso en templos cristianos, que, además de estar bajo su advocación, también la veneran bajo la popular forma de una Virgen Negra.

Una de tales representaciones, la podemos encontrar en uno de los templos más antiguos y carismáticos de Bilbao: el templo de San Antón. Situado junto a la Ría, no lejos del viejo mercado y las siete calles que conforman el casco antiguo, en cuyo epicentro de levanta, además, una de las catedrales más pequeñas de España, pero no por ello menos interesantes, la de Santiago, la figura de Andra Mari todavía ejerce su inmemorial magnetismo, independientemente de su asociación con una figura cuyo culto, no comenzó a despegar hasta bien entrado el siglo XII: la Virgen María.
