[ENG-SPN] The Cathedral Born of Mystery / La Catedral que Nació sobre el Misterio

Like the famous modernist church, crowned on its dome by the figure of an apocalyptic angel, which, until 1925, stood guard and terrified the people of Madrid at the entrance to what is considered one of the world's largest necropolises, the Cathedral of Santiago, located in the heart of Bilbao's old town, also has one of its main portals dedicated to one of these beings who have always dwelled between the celestial and the earthly, using as their vehicle that Scala Dei (Ladder of God) mentioned in Jacob's significant dream: the Angel's Gate, well known to pilgrims on the Northern Way.

But the cathedral also has such mysterious origins that, setting aside its size and apparent shortcomings that prevent it from standing out among the finest examples of Gothic art—an art in which Fulcanelli already saw the peculiarity of double meanings, masked significance, and the foundations of alchemy—its great historical enigmas, legends, and traditions, it possesses a power that is difficult to compare.

Like the famous discovery of the supposed remains of the Apostle James in a dark forest in Libredón, present-day Santiago de Compostela, the subsoil beneath Bilbao Cathedral also holds its necropolises, the foundations of ancient temples, its secret passageways, and the faces hidden amidst the enormous wave of creativity that is its walls, vaults, and flying buttresses. It is said that medieval stonemasons deliberately left these features not only to represent themselves and the donors who contributed to its construction, but also to showcase its understated beauty, its hidden mythological symbolism, and above all, the focal point around which the most fantastic legends of the old town converge. This town, comprised of the Seven Streets—a number considered a magic number par excellence—is well worth visiting and, above all, enjoying.

Como la famosa iglesia modernista, coronada en su cúpula por la figura de un ángel apocalíptico, que, hasta el año 1925 campeaba y atemorizaba a los madrileños a la entrada de la que está considerada como una de las mayores necrópolis del mundo, la de Madrid, también la catedral de Santiago, situada en el corazón del casco antiguo de Bilbao, tiene una de sus portadas principales dedicada a uno de estos seres que siempre han campeado entre lo celestial y lo terrenal, teniendo, como vehículo esa Scala Dei constatada en el significativo sueño de Jacob: la Puerta del Ángel, bien conocida por los peregrinos que hacen el denominado Camino del Norte.

Pero la catedral, tiene, además, unos orígenes tan misteriosos, que, salvando el carácter de su tamaño y de sus aparentes carencias que no la hacen destacar entre los mejores exponentes de este arte, el Gótico, en el que Fulcanelli ya veía la peculiaridad de los dobles sentidos, de los significados enmascarados y de los fundamentos de la Alquimia, sus grandes enigmas históricos, sus leyendas y sus tradiciones, que la otorgan una fuerza, difícil de comparar.

Como en el famoso descubrimiento de los supuestos restos del Apóstol Santiago en un oscuro bosque de Libredón, la actual Compostela, también el subsuelo donde se levanta la catedral de Bilbao tiene sus necrópolis, los cimientos de antiguos templos, sus pasadizos secretos, los rostros ocultos entre esa enorme ola de creatividad que son sus muros, bóvedas y arbotantes, que, según se dice, dejaron a propósito los canteros medievales, no sólo para representarse a sí mismos y a los donantes que contribuyeron a levantarla, su recogida belleza, la simbología mitológica oculta y sobre todo, ese foco sobre el que se concentran las más fantásticas leyendas de un casco viejo, formado por las Siete Calles -número mágico por excelencia- que merece la pena visitar y sobre todo, disfrutar.
