[ENG-SPN] The Black Virgin that Crowns the Alcarria / La Virgen Negra que Corona la Alcarria

Without diminishing the beauty and cultural importance of the places in Brihuega we have seen so far—the Church of Saint Phillip, the Church of Saint Michael, and the castle—we cannot help but be captivated by what we consider the true heart of this authentic capital of the Alcarria, from whose heights the splendid Tajuña valley unfolds: the Church of the Virgin of La Peña.

"Nigra sum sed formosa": I am black, but beautiful, said the Shulamite, the enigmatic Queen of Sheba, to King Solomon, who, despite his fame for wisdom, also had to face, like any other mortal, at least one of the dilemmas presented by the Major Arcana of the Tarot known as "The Lovers", also called "The Two Paths": the choice.

"Nigra sum sed formosa": I am black, but beautiful. The Virgin of La Peña is also black, like the Shulamite, and like her, her enigmatic image is a beacon that immediately draws attention, perhaps not so much for its beauty, but for its seductive and legendary charm. It is also no coincidence that the altar of the sanctuary that houses her and bears her name rises precisely on the rocky promontory riddled with caves where she was ‘miraculously’ found when the Christians conquered the city—a constant that persisted throughout much of the Middle Ages with this type of virginal image, which, among other symbolisms, came to represent those ancient Celtic Mothers who, also venerated in caves, were called ‘Virgine Pariturae’: the Virgin who will give birth.

Sin menospreciar la belleza y la importancia cultural de los lugares de Brihuega que hemos visto hasta el momento –la iglesia de San Felipe, la iglesia de San Miguel y el castillo- no podemos, sino dejarnos seducir ahora por el lugar que consideramos como el verdadero corazón de esta auténtica capitalidad de la Alcarria, desde cuyas alturas se domina la espléndida vega del Tajuña: la iglesia de la Virgen de la Peña.

Nigra sum sed formosa: negra soy, pero hermosa, decía la sulamita, la enigmática Reina de Saba a un rey Salomón, que, a pesar de su fama de sabiduría también tuvo que afrontar, como cualquier otro mortal, al menos una de las tesituras que nos plantea el Arcano Mayor del Tarot que lleva por nombre ‘Los Enamorados’, aunque también se le conoce como ‘los Dos Caminos’: la elección.

La Virgen de la Peña también es negra, como la sulamita y como ésta, su enigmática imagen es un faro que atrae inmediatamente la atención, no tanto, quizás, por su belleza, como por su seductor y legendario encanto. Tampoco es casual que el altar del santuario que la cobija y que lleva su nombre, se eleve, precisamente, sobre el promontorio rocoso y horadado de cuevas, en el que fue ‘milagrosamente’ encontrada cuando los cristianos conquistaron la ciudad, constante que se mantuvo durante buena parte de la Edad Media con este tipo de imágenes virginales, que vendrían a representar, además de otros simbolismos, a aquellas antiguas Madres celtas, que, veneradas también en cuevas, se las denominaba ‘Virgine Pariturae’: la Virgen que dará a Luz’.
