[ENG-SPN] Nicolas Flamel, Aleister Crowley, and the Hermetic Secrets of El Burgo de Osma / Nicolás Flamel, Aleister Crowley y los secretos herméticos de El Burgo de Osma

Although many historians dismiss it as mere legend, the story remains very much alive among those with an interest in the occult: the alleged journey to Spain by one of the most legendary alchemists, Nicolas Flamel. He was supposedly following a trail of knowledge that would lead him to the long-sought-after Philosopher’s Stone—knowledge cleverly concealed within a complex web of Hermetic symbolism scattered across key locations along what is arguably the world’s most extraordinary pilgrimage route: the Camino de Santiago.

It is not far-fetched to imagine that both the main routes and the lesser-known, yet equally fascinating, secondary paths might have drawn the attention of singular figures—individuals whose spirits were touched by a Faustian shadow, driven by an insatiable thirst for knowledge, to the point of being willing to strike a bargain with the Devil himself to attain it. Unfortunately, there is no record confirming that Nicolas Flamel ever visited this Hermetic hub of the Celtiberian heartland: El Burgo de Osma.

However, it is well known—much like the memory of the "poète maudit" Ezra Pound, which still lingers in Medinaceli—that another figure, who famously claimed to be the reincarnation of "The Beast 666," also left his mark here: Aleister Crowley. It is a documented fact that Crowley visited El Burgo de Osma. While his arrival may have been partly motivated by the spirit of adventure that defined many young people in the late 19th and early 20th centuries—a quest akin to the "hero’s journey"—it is also likely that, much like Flamel, Crowley was searching for Hermetic signs to support his own esoteric theories. Indeed, even now—centuries and years later—strolling through the old town of this renowned Soria capital is akin to embarking on a journey where mystery lies sculpted—albeit at times in fragments—into its most charismatic, significant, and unexpected historic buildings.
