[ENG-SPN] Medieval lodgings / Hospedajes medievales

DSCN4342_edited.jpg

In those medieval times, when people had enough to survive the uncertainty of a time where black and white inexorably marked their destiny and where travel, except for expedition, generally did not go further, of the adventure that represented the repopulation of the lands that were being reconquered, there did not exist, not even in our thoughts, that mass phenomenon, tourism, which now, in our times, not only excites us, but is also has become one of the great engines of the world economy.

Except for the dark and gloomy inns, located on dusty roads or in the interior of cities, where, in general, sanitation was conspicuous by its absence and where security, in many cases, was nothing but a simple chimera, so there was only one place, of course, for the common people, which offered more or less adequate conditions of hospitality and accommodation: the converts' rooms of the great monasteries, one of whose examples, still stripped of the typical straw bunks, is shown in these photographs.

I wonder how good the dark inns will look like

I think it is good to never forget who we are, where we come from and what our ancestors had to suffer so that we could live better. These types of places and the stories they tell us are, in their own way, also the best lessons to value and take an example of their courage and resilience.

The monasteries' convert rooms you've shared are great even though they look worn out. It's good they were used to lodge tourists or visitors in the past in your country and I think in spite of their aged look they are still in pretty good condition and can still be used for housing purposes. Thanks for sharing.

In this case, they are in fairly good condition, despite the fact that the rest of the monastery, to which they belong, is completely and unfortunately ruined, as it was one of the most formidable Benedictine constructions in Spain, dating back more than a thousand years. Which shows something else that has been lost: well-done and artisanal work.

A work characteristic of a style, the Romanesque, that reigned for centuries in my country and of which we still have, despite everything, a rich cultural heritage. Thank you very much for your comment and best regards.
