[ENG-SPN] Escalante: The Hermitage of the Mist / Escalante: La Ermita de la Bruma

Located just a few kilometers from Santoña, but sharing with it the marshes created by the Cantabrian Sea's waves when their force transforms them into a metaphorical arm stretching inland, the town of Escalante holds an ancient hermitage, well-known to pilgrims throughout history.

It is, without further ado, the small Romanesque hermitage of San Román, whose rustic architecture, undeniably possessing a primitive charm, powerfully draws attention, not only for the numerous clues left inside by itinerant stonemasons, like a logbook of hidden intentions for seekers of alternative knowledge, but also for the almost supernatural solitude that characterizes the place.

A solitude where the dense, stubbornly misty mountain holds numerous mysteries, and where, throughout the ages, strange luminous manifestations, not only of unknown origin but also difficult to explain, have left all sorts of folkloric legends in the collective unconscious of the locals. These legends, in some way, increase the intrinsic value of the place, enriching, above all, the pilgrims who, despite the futuristic era in which we live, still prioritize transcendental adventure.

Situado a escasos kilómetros de Santoña, pero compartiendo con ésta las marismas que provocan las olas del Cantábrico cuando su impulsividad las convierte en un metafórico brazo que se estira tierra adentro, la localidad de Escalante guarda una ermita inmemorial, bien conocida por los peregrinos de todos los tiempos.

Se trata, sin más rodeos, de la pequeña ermita románica de San Román, cuya rústica arquitectura, en modo alguna exenta de primitivo encanto, llama poderosamente la atención, no sólo por las numerosas claves que los canteros itinerantes dejaron en su interior, a modo de bitácora de intenciones soterradas para buscadores de conocimientos alternativos, sino también, por la soledad sobrenatural que caracteriza al lugar.

Una soledad, donde el monte tupido y obstinadamente brumoso, guarda numerosos misterios y donde, a lo largo de los tiempos, extrañas manifestaciones lumínicas, no sólo de desconocido origen, sino también de difícil explicación, han ido dejando en el inconsciente colectivo de los lugareños todo tipo de folklóricas leyendas, que, de alguna manera, aumentan el valor intrínseco del lugar, enriqueciendo, sobre todo, a unos peregrinos, que, a pesar de la era futurista en la que estamos inmersos, todavía continúan dando prioridad a la aventura trascendental.
