Without approaching those nightmarish beings that inhabited the amazing staging of the paintings by Hieronimus Bosch, Bosch, and especially, that paradigmatic work, known, curiously, as 'The Garden of Earthly Delights' -a painting, by the way , which exerted an irrepressible attraction on King Felipe II, to the point that, according to the chronicles, he died without taking his eyes off him, constantly having him at the head of his bed- the delicious settings that make up that other garden, known as the Parque del Retiro, in Madrid, which, until relatively recent times, were the exclusive place of kings, also invite contemplation.

Not in vain, they received the name of delights or caprices, since, in them, the sovereigns not only satisfied their most extravagant sense of desire, not skimping on all the details, but also incorporated elements transgressors, where there was never a lack of deep hermetic references, whose trace is still quite appreciable, in the architectural designs and sculptures, which, placed in certain places, make up a heterodox panegyric, whose message constitutes a challenge to discover. Among these elements -fortunately, another of them is currently being recovered, such as the artificial mountain of Fernando VII- also included the artificial caves, representative, not only of that metaphorical Wonderland, which is the Unconscious, but also , also, of the unfathomable temple where those powerful deities live, the Mothers, on whose steps of descent, he did not even dare to transgress Goethe's self-assured Mephistopheles, no matter how grandson he was, as he liked to confess, of the original Serpent.

Sin aproximarse a esos seres de pesadilla que habitaban en las alucinantes puestas en escena de los cuadros de Hyeronimus Bosch, el Bosco, y en especial, aquella paradigmática obra, conocida, curiosamente, como ‘El Jardín de las Delicias’ -cuadro, por cierto, que ejercía una irreprimible atracción sobre el rey Felipe II, hasta el punto de que, según las crónicas, falleció sin apartar los ojos de él, teniéndolo, constantemente, a la cabecera de su cama- los deliciosos escenarios que conforman ese otro jardín, conocido como el Parque del Retiro, de Madrid, los cuales, hasta tiempos relativamente recientes, fueron lugar de exclusividad de reyes, invitan, también, a la contemplación.

No en vano, recibían el nombre de delicias o de caprichos, puesto que, en ellos, los soberanos no sólo satisfacían su sentido más extravagante del deseo, no escatimando, tampoco, en todo lujo de detalles, sino, que, además, incorporaban elementos transgresores, donde no faltaban nunca, profundas referencias herméticas, cuya huella, es bastante apreciable, todavía, en los diseños arquitectónicos y las esculturas, que, colocadas en determinados lugares, conforman un panegírico heterodoxo, cuyo mensaje constituye un reto a descubrir. Entre esos elementos -por fortuna, actualmente se está recuperando otro de ellos, como la montaña artificial de Fernando VII- se incluían, además, las grutas artificiales, representativas, no sólo de ese metafórico País de las Maravillas, que es el Inconsciente, sino, también, del insondable templo donde habitan aquellas poderosas deidades, las Madres, en cuyos peldaños de descenso, ni siquiera se atrevía a transgredir el desenfado Mefistófeles, de Goethe, por muy nieto que fuera, según gustaba de confesar, de la Serpiente original.
