[ENG-SPN] Castilfrío: The Silent Ithaca of the Highlands / Castilfrío: la Ítaca silenciosa de las Tierras Altas

If Yanguas has left us with a sweet medieval aftertaste, even though, like the libertine French poet François Villon, we too may still wonder where the snows of yesteryear have gone, in terms of its lost historical and artistic heritage, our next destination, no less surprising, is sure to evoke a similar feeling. However, this shouldn't prevent us from appreciating all that it still has to offer, especially if we view it with the same objective ethics with which Cavafy regarded Ulysses' Ithaca, recommending that we extend our journey as long as possible: Castilfrío.

Castilfrío, besides being another faded gem in the Numantian Highlands, is also that Ithaca to which its favorite heroes return at the end of their journey, when life, ruled by that Goddess of the Underworld, whom, figuratively speaking, we can consider the Wheel of Fortune, decides that the time has come to stop their hearts, as happened, a little over a year ago, to the multifaceted writer Fernando Sánchez Dragó, whose house is surely the easiest to find, despite the silence that now hangs over the brilliant and memorable Eleusinian Encounters, another cultural treasure added to the place.

Originally called Castilfrío de San Juan and located at the foot of the Sierra de San Miguel, we are in one of those places that, in terms of symbolism, we could call 'hot' and where we should not be surprised to find, in its rough parish church, a Marian figure - moved from its habitat, the hermitage that also bears its name, located on the outskirts of the town and endowed with a significant hexagonal dome, inside which one can admire a spectacular Gothic Christ, which induces suspicions of Templarism, since it is partly reminiscent of that other Christ of the Cellar of San Polo - undoubtedly very related to the Templars: the Virgin of the Holm Oak or of the Oak, a Romanesque-Gothic carving that goes completely unnoticed by the traveler, covered, as it is, by those garments with which it was decided to cover them and which, in not a few cases, meant mutilations of limbs that showed a rich symbolism. All of this, combined with the magnificent, typically mountainous rural architecture, whose fortified manor houses still display that other universe of stories and legends—which are, ultimately, the noble coats of arms—makes Castilfrío a place where one can indulge in pleasant speculation.

Si Yanguas nos ha dejado un dulce sabor medieval, aunque, todavía, como el poeta libertino francés, François Villon, también nosotros nos preguntemos a dónde habrán ido a parar las nieves de antaño, en cuanto a su patrimonio histórico-artístico desaparecido, nuestro siguiente destino, no menos sorprendente, ha de provocarnos una sensación parecida, sin que ello sea obstáculo, sin embargo, para no gratificarnos con todo aquello que todavía nos puede ofrecer, sobre todo, si lo miramos con la ética objetiva con la que Cavafis miró a la Ítaca de Ulises, recomendándonos alargar nuestro viaje cuanto más mejor: Castilfrío.

Castilfrío, además de ser otra perla venida a menos en las Tierras Altas numantinas, es también esa Ítaca a la que regresan sus héroes predilectos al final de su camino, cuando la vida, regida por esa Diosa del Inframundo, que, figurativamente hablando, podemos considerar a la Rueda de la Fortuna, decide que ha llegado el momento de parar su corazón, como así le sucedió, hace poco más de un año, al polifacético escritor Fernando Sánchez Dragó, cuya casa seguramente es la más fácil de encontrar, a pesar del silencio que pesa ahora sobre los brillantes y memorables Encuentros Eleusinos, otra riqueza cultural añadida al lugar.

Originalmente denominado Castilfrío de San Juan y situado a la vera de la Sierra de San Miguel, estamos en un lugar de esos, que, en cuanto a simbolismo, podríamos denominar como ‘caliente’ y donde no hemos de sorprendernos al encontrarnos, en su tosca iglesia parroquial, con una figura mariana -trasladada de su hábitat, la ermita que lleva también su nombre, situada a las afueras del pueblo y dotada de un significativo cimborrio hexagonal, en cuyo interior se puede admirar un espectacular Cristo gótico, que induce a sospechas de templarismo, pues recuerda en parte a aquel otro Cristo Cillerero de San Polo- sin duda alguna muy relacionada con los templarios: la Virgen de la Carrasca o de la Encina, una talla, románico-gótica que pasa totalmente desapercibida para el viajero, cubierta, como está, por esos trajes con los que se decidió encubrirlas y que, en no pocos casos, supusieron mutilaciones de extremidades que mostraban una rica simbología. Todo esto, unido a la magnífica arquitectura rural, típicamente serrana, cuyas fortificadas casonas todavía muestran ese otro universo de historias y leyendas, que son, en definitiva, los escudos nobiliarios, hacen de Castilfrío un lugar donde dejarse llevar por felices especulaciones.
