[ENG-SPN] Bosch: The Painter of the Unknowable / El Bosco: El Pintor de lo Incognoscible

One of the fathers of Surrealism, André Breton, defined man as "that ultimate dreamer," a definition which, applied to the supernatural enigma that is Bosch, falls decidedly short of deciphering one of the greatest enigmas in History and, by extension, that circumstantial ambivalence of complementarities and circumstances that is Art.

The Dutch city of 's-Hertogenbosch would probably not have overcome, like many other Western cities, the ostracism of modern times, had it not been for the fact that, like the famous Bethlehem where the Magi were led to witness an extraordinary birth, it also saw the birth of a prophet, possibly ahead of his time and destined to break molds, making Art the pure and simple personification of the Unknowable: Hieronymus Bosch, El Bosco.

Painter, member of a religious brotherhood, visionary, and possibly even a spy in his spare time, the truth is that, centuries after his death, his work offers us more than just a cultural legacy of the highest order: clear proof that the surrealist poet Paul Éluard was right when he asserted that there are other worlds, but, indeed, they are all in this one.

Uno de los padres del Surrealismo, André Breton, definió al hombre como ‘ese soñador definitivo’, definición, que, aplicada a ese sobrenatural enigma que es el Bosco, se queda definitivamente corta a la hora de descifrar uno de los mayores enigmas de la Historia y por defecto, de esa circunstancial ambivalencia de complementariedades y circunstancias que es el Arte.

Probablemente, la ciudad holandesa de Hertogenbosch no hubiera superado, como muchas otras ciudades occidentales, el ostracismo de los tiempos modernos, de no haber sido porque en ella, como la famosa Belén a donde fueron conducidos los Magos para asistir a un nacimiento extraordinario, no hubiera visto también nacer a un profeta, posiblemente adelantado a su tiempo y destinado a romper moldes, haciendo del Arte la personificación pura y dura de lo Incognoscible: Hieronymus Bosch, el Bosco.

Pintor, cofrade, visionario y posiblemente también espía en sus ratos libres, lo cierto, después de todo, es que, siglos después de la muerte del personaje, tenemos en su obra algo más que un legado cultural de primera magnitud: la prueba evidente de que el poeta surrealista, Paul Eluard, tenía razón cuando afirmaba que hay otros mundos, pero, efectivamente, están todos en éste.
