[ENG-SPN] Aldea de San Esteban: Roman Echoes on the Way of Exile / Aldea de San Esteban: ecos romanos en el Camino del Destierro

Another of the Numantian villages located near San Esteban de Gormaz, on the border with Segovia, and that site of impossible dreams, known as Tiermes or Termancia, which could have inspired any of the Dantean tales of the Cthulhu Mythos by the American writer Howard Phillips Lovecraft, is called the Village of San Esteban.

As a well-placed sign on one of its main streets indicates, we are in the heart of one of the legendary routes that, while not necessarily the Camino de Santiago, has nevertheless managed to awaken a sense of adventure by reviving forgotten medieval paths: the so-called Way of El Cid, or the route followed by the daring Castilian gentleman from Vivar on his way to exile.

A glance at the village suggests that, indeed, even in modern times, it never truly became what its name indicates: a simple hamlet. However, if we look at those curious columns supporting the weight of the porticoed gallery of its unrecognizable church, we might conclude that there was once a Roman settlement here, whose remains, as in neighboring San Esteban de Gormaz, served posterity as fill material, their former value and significance perhaps forgotten.

Otro de los pueblos numantinos situados en las proximidades de San Esteban de Gormaz, la frontera con Segovia y ese yacimiento de sueños imposibles, que, conocido con los nombres de Tiermes o de Termancia, podría haber inspirado cualquiera de los dantescos contenidos de los Mitos de Cthulhu, del escritor norteamericano, Howard Phillips Lovecraft, lleva por nombre Aldea de San Esteban.

Como bien indica un oportuno cartel situado en una de sus callejas principales, nos encontramos en pleno corazón de una de las rutas legendarias, que, sin ser necesariamente Camino de Santiago, han conseguido, sin embargo, despertar la emoción por la aventura, recuperando los olvidados caminos medievales: el denominado Camino del Cid o la ruta que siguió el osado gentilhombre castellano de Vivar, camino de su destierro.

Un vistazo al pueblo, induce a pensar, que, en efecto, ni siquiera en tiempos modernos pasó de ser, en realidad, lo que su propio nombre indica: una simple aldea. Aunque, si nos fijamos en esas curiosas columnas que soportan el peso de la galería porticada de su irreconocible iglesia, tal vez lleguemos a la conclusión de que también aquí hubo en tiempos habitáculo romano, cuyos restos, como sucede en la vecina San Esteban de Gormaz, sirvieron a la posteridad como materiales de relleno, olvidados, quizás, su antiguo valor y significado.
