Among the cities of some relevance, which form an essential part of that small Castilian-Leonese community, which responds to the etymologically Celtiberian name of Soria, it stands out, due to its antiquity, its beauty, its impressive artistic wealth and, above all, its excellent environment, that endearing population center, known as the Burgo de Osma.

P1180686_copia.jpg

Developed in medieval times, around the ancient Romano-Celtiberian city of Osma, el Burgo, the name by which it is best known and whose name, burgenses, bears its inhabitants, unlike the capital Soria, it has one of the oldest cathedrals imposing and relevant, around which revolve, not only the remains of the monumental medieval wall that protected it, but also its oldest and by default most picturesque and relevant population center.

Leaving for another occasion, the most relevant details that concern its interior -such as, for example, the magnificent polychrome sepulcher of San Pedro de Osma, located in one of the chapels attached to the cloister, its Romanesque Christ from the 12th century or even the carving of its revered Virgen del Espino, which tradition shares with that other one that is located some fifteen kilometers away, in the neighboring town of Barcebal- walking the sides of the cathedral, comes to mean, in the eyes of travelers and visitors -quite Frequent, by the way- submerge, metaphorically speaking, in the heart of the social and costumbrist life of the proud Burgos.

This, outside the essentially work environments, takes place, above all, on weekends, around the arcades of the old buildings of the city and of course, the most beautiful to admire, where not only the traditional markets are located. -where you can find, from the most exquisite convent sweets and perhaps for this reason, called 'nun's tits', to the tastiest and most traditional meats and sausages, including bacon and a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, directly collected from the fruitful riverside orchards- but also the oldest and liveliest of catering establishments, whose dishes and regional products are capable of always successfully tempting the most demanding of palates.

If we add to this the remarkable quality of those excellent wines that bear the Ribera del Duero denomination of origin, we will have, without a doubt, the best accompaniment to accompany any type of celebration and make the after dinner, an occasion, certainly, unforgettable.

Crowded, even when the icy frosts that precede the furious Soria winters are still not at their peak and splendor, it is difficult to find any free place on the innumerable terraces that leave the cathedral behind, to go to the vicinity of the Plaza Mayor and the old San Agustin Hospital, founded in 1468 by Bishop Pedro García de Montoya to welcome pilgrims and the sick and whose appearance, above all, that referred to the towers, is so reminiscent of the emblematic Baroque building that until relatively recent times recent, outside the Madrid City Council.

And if with these incentives, the demanding and thrill-seeking traveler considers that he does not have enough, he may think of continuing the adventure, going up the waters of the Ucero River, to the sources of its birth, located in the vicinity of the town that also carries its name, which, moreover, is located practically on the edge of one of the most surprising and privileged natural environments, not only of the picturesque Soria orography, but also of the entire Iberian Peninsula: the fabulous Canyon of the Río Lobos.

P1180774_copia.jpg

In short: a place, not only excellent, in which to spend sweet and pleasant days of vacation, but also an opportune starting point to discover places of incredible beauty, located in the vicinity of an area, on the border with Burgos, It is also full of history, tradition and, above all, ancient and monumental cities, such as neighboring San Esteban de Gormaz, which, among other things, is famous for having the oldest Romanesque church in the province: Saint Michael.
