Although it is open every day of the year, it is precisely now, in these pre-Christmas dates, when the famous Madrid Wax Museum receives an influx of visitors, a detail, of course, that has led to its becoming a true tradition, where Families, especially, often get swept up in a decidedly fun and sometimes even chilling adventure.

Mark Antony and Cleopatra vs. Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor

Located in the central Plaza de Colón, sharing the limelight with the Casino Gran Madrid and the huge lucky frog, which baffles many of the passers-by who visit us every year, the Wax Museum, which, curiously, was inaugurated on Saint Valentín, from the year 1972, has a select variety of characters and settings, the magic of whose prominence, raised to the naturalness of its characters, is a complete invitation to a particular journey through time, capable of providing us with a whole formidable world. of sensations and of meeting, in some case, with those favorite heroes, who in some way influenced our lives.

Immeasurable Elizabeth Taylor-Cleopatra

It is not surprising, then, that as soon as the visit begins, Elizabeth Taylor is the one who has possibly embodied the role of Cleopatra with the greatest majestic presence -a woman who, according to historians, shone more for her prodigious intelligence than for her haughty and seductive beauty, together with Marco Antonio -incarnated by Richard Burton, an actor with whom he would have the most notorious encounters and disagreements in the future- who exchanged the role of conqueror for that of conquered, next to some Roman emperors, including César, who soon gave prominence to those barbaric Visigothic kings, like the last one, named Rodrigo, who was defeated in the rough waters of the Guadalete river and perhaps for this reason, from there, the viewer penetrates the colorful Muslim world, where, in addition to the most relevant characters who made Al-Andalus a refined paradise, including the famous Harum al-Rashid, the Spain we know today began to be forged.

This practically begins with the Catholic Monarchs, who serve as hosts, together with the most relevant scenes of the discovery of the New World, to the subsequent Habsburg and Bourbon dynasties, whose influence determined, from now on, the destinies of a country, which It remained for centuries as the first world power.

But in this museum of illusions, there is no shortage of references to those cultural and artistic environments that made it possible for sensitivity and beauty to be, as they are today, within everyone's reach: Goya and his Maja, in this case, dressed by decorum; El Greco and his apocalyptic burial of the Count of Orgaz; Velázquez and his Meninas and in front of him, that extraordinary genius from Cadaqués, who not only admired him, but also boasted of having been the first to discover the numerical key that Velázquez used in his paintings: Salvador Dalí.

The great geniuses of Spanish Literature of several generations, all in partnership, preceding the great love dramas, such as Romeo and Juliet and of course, a short distance from where Miguel de Cervantes, in the light of a candle, as if he was a medium, writing, with irrepressible fury, the most exciting and cryptic of chivalric novels: Don Quixote de la Mancha.

The world of great scientific discoveries, headed by the genius of Leonardo Da Vinci and his Universal Man or Vitruvian Man -his Architecture treatises were in force until well into the 20th century- up to the present day, with a replica of the father of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, serving as a prelude to show business, with great heroes from sport, from the world of cinema -including superheroes and supervillains- and from the circus, surrounding the most important world politicians of all time.

The time of beliefs and religion, with the greatest figures of Christianity, facing the origin of the most charismatic Sacrament, the Eucharist, performed by Jesus Christ himself, on a real scale, in the mysterious setting of a Holy Supper imagined in the Renaissance by Leonardo Da Vinci himself.

Velazquez and Las Meninas

The world of the supernatural, with the incorporation of new and terrible characters -because that is another of the qualities of the Madrid Wax Museum: its evolution- that together with the classics Dracula, Frankenstein, the Mummy and the Wolf Man, will provoke us a shudder and in some cases, without expecting them, the shock of their animation.

And in the run-up to the end, before reaching the tenderness of ET and the familiar world of cartoons, the lively room where actors and singers of all time will suggest the most unforgettable selfies and for a moment, just for a moment. moment, we will fall in love again.

In short: an experience and a tradition that you cannot miss on your visit to Madrid.

A very cool little tour of a wax museum. Those models of the twins from the Shining would have me terrified :).

Ha ha ha...they would terrify anyone. I think they make up one of the scariest sequences in the movie The Shining. Sometimes when I travel back to my hotel room at night and see those long corridors, I remember this scene and wonder what I would do if I had such an experience. Thank you very much for your comment and best regards.
