The change in school education over time

In our society, people are faced with three problems due to the institutionalised school system. On the one hand, the school has monopolised learning, on the other hand, the student has been dispossessed of his own educational path, of his own learning, and thirdly, the concept of education has been emptied of its content. This school system has asserted a "monopoly" over learning, and from this ultimately follows a mindset, a mentality that says: "Children belong in school, children learn in school and only in school can children learn and can children be taught something!

If you look at this development of the view of man in our society, it means in reverse that any learning without schooling is considered worthless, thus a person without school is also worthless. Only a school graduate can also be a full citizen. The teacher then assumes not only the role of the teacher, but also that of the "moralist" who determines the education and uneducation of those to be schooled. At the same time, "ideologists" also take on the role of therapists who feel empowered to penetrate the inner life of their students and give them there their personal idea, their concept of morality, of integrity, of compassion and of solidarity, which has led to results that are all too familiar to us, especially in the Western world...

In the end, the whole thing boils down to the fact that the schooling of our society is carried out according to a clear agenda, a secret curriculum, and this secret curriculum says that children are basically not yet complete human beings. Children still have to be adapted, by their natural nature they are not fit from the start in this degenerate society and community of values, they still have to be made fit and this participation in life is only possible for them after training by adults. These adults must be an authority, they must have been given authority by the "institution of school".

The underlying concept of education in our educational society, in which education is considered a resource and people are also considered a resource, is a concept of "education as a product", which can be traded. This product is measurable, just as competence should be measurable, measurable through tests, and through the fact that everything that concerns education and learning is at once measurable, the institutionalised values that are "inculcated" into the students through school are captured by a kind of quantity or quantitative character. In this way, young people are "bent" by the school for a world in which everything can be measured and categorised and also hierarchised, i.e. all values as well as the human being.

The described state of affairs becomes problematic for society at the moment when the value of "education as product" is measured by how well indoctrinated pupils have memorised and can reproduce the "ideology" inculcated into them, while independent thinking is often even seen as counterproductive and lowering the value.

As the paternalism of the teacher and his curricula robs the student of his feeling and his teacher thinks he knows what is best for him, for his whole personal development, he is ultimately robbed of his own educational path and the liberation of the human being. The question, of course, would be "What would it be like to be educated, to be truly freely educated?". The answer is that most learning is not a result of instruction, as Ivan Illich already wrote in the 70s, much more learning is that activity which is freely done through a free activity, through a self-determined activity, so that truly learning people do not need manipulation by others.

Of course, this only true way of learning can also happen outside of school. Everyone learns how to live outside of school; this applies to speaking, thinking, loving, feeling, playing, working and even critical questioning, which a person learns without doing anything simply by being there. This concept of learning for a young person who is already a full member of society from birth, precisely this concept would be worth promoting. Of course, all this would only be possible after the liberation of the free spirit, which is currently still imprisoned in this system installed by ideologues.

Only when education is no longer a resource, when knowledge is no longer an obligation, writes Ivan Illich, can we as humans finally embrace the power of learning.

Very interesting post. Thanks to the author. The education system has really changed, but I think that a lot depends on the student and his discipline and desire to learn. As written in the ghost writer article you can get an education by yourself sitting in the kitchen, the main thing is to want it. And whatever the difficulties in the educational process, this can be easily overcome, since there are many useful auxiliary services for students.
