Walt Whitman, el gran patriarca de la poesía universal moderna, nació el 31 de mayo de 1819. En su honor publiqué antes dos posts; aquí uno de ellos *. Volviendo a él, escribí este ejercicio poético.

Walt Whitman, the great patriarch of modern universal poetry, was born on May 31, 1819. In his honor I published two posts before; here is one of them *. Returning to him, I wrote this poetic exercise.

¡Oh, mi viejo Walt!
Diría con Baudelaire,
“mi semejante, mi hermano”.
Cuánta agua ha corrido
bajo ese puente de Brooklyn,
que es la vida,
la tuya y la nuestra.

Seguiremos cantando,
si la melancolía de estos días lo permite,
a ese “mí mismo” (como tú)
que es el milagro
de seguir viviendo,
con sus amadas contradicciones,
con sus eclipses.

Añoraremos la alegría de tu canto
en nuestros juveniles corazones,
hoy tocados de dolor,
como tú también sentiste.
Solo que nos falta a veces
ese viento que te animó,
y claudicamos en la sombra.

Acompáñanos, poeta,
tú que, al dolor y a la soledad,
resististe, en la poesía,
coraje y alma de la permanencia.

Oh, my old Walt!
I would say with Baudelaire,
"my fellow man, my brother."
How much water has flowed
under that Brooklyn bridge
that is life,
yours and ours.

We will continue to sing,
if the melancholy of these days allows it,
to that "myself" (like you)
that is the miracle
of continuing to live,
with its beloved contradictions,
with its eclipses.

We will long for the joy of your singing
in our youthful hearts,
today touched with pain,
as you also felt.
Only that sometimes we lack
that wind that encouraged you,
and we give up in the shadows.

Join us, poet,
you who, in pain and loneliness,
