La noche me alcanzó
con su definitivo nadir
Otras veces se había amagado
en mis ojos velados
en la despedida de mi madre
en la inasible presencia de mi Beatriz

En el espejo vi mi sombra
y el universo al revés
La noche oscura de San Juan
me iluminó y abrió mi alma
al soterrado gusto
de la oscuridad y el silencio

La biblioteca presagió el laberinto
de mis días tenues como el ocaso
y en los libros el secreto de la soledad
Soñé muchas muertes
a la luz de Sherezade y de Milton
Una llegó hasta mí y no me abandonó

The Night (A Poetic Exercise for Jorge Luis Borges)

Today marks the 40th anniversary of the death of the unparalleled Argentine and universal writer Jorge Luis Borges, which occurred in 1986. I have published several articles about him on #Hive; here are some links: 1; 2; 3.

This time I have written a poetic exercise in his memory.

Night overtook me
with its final nadir
Other times it had threatened
in my veiled eyes
in my mother's farewell
in the elusive presence of my Beatrice

In the mirror I saw my shadow
and the universe upside down
The dark night of Saint John's
illuminated me and opened my soul
to the hidden taste
of darkness and silence

The library foreshadowed the labyrinth
of my days, faint as dusk
and in the books the secret of solitude
I dreamed many deaths
in the light of Scheherazade and Milton
One reached me and did not leave me
