Un juego del destino
como el de un ajedrez difuso
me trajo a este mundo
precioso y atroz a la vez
Las líneas y las letras
como cábala civil
me mostraron sus secretos
los senderos de su laberinto
las cifras del universo vislumbrado
Bebí en Platón y Spinoza
la incertidumbre del pensamiento
en Dante y Blake
el vino del encantamiento
en Cervantes y Quevedo
los riesgos de la creación
en Carriego y Hernández
el filo de la daga y el frío de la muerte

A Game of Destiny (A Poetic Exercise for Jorge Luis Borges)
Yesterday marked the birth of Jorge Luis Borges (August 24, 1899), one of our greatest writers of universal renown. I have published several posts about him on this platform: 1, 2, 3, 4. So now, with this poetic exercise, I attempt to honor him once again.
A game of fate,
like a hazy chess game,
brought me to this world,
beautiful and atrocious at once.
Lines and letters,
like a civil cabal,
revealed their secrets to me:
the paths of their labyrinth,
the figures of the glimpsed universe.
I drank from Plato and Spinoza
the uncertainty of thought; from Dante and Blake
the wine of enchantment; from Cervantes and Quevedo
the risks of creation; from Carriego and Hernández
the edge of the dagger and the chill of death.
