Se habla mucho en los últimos años de distopía y se la representa en novelas, filmes y videojuegos —productos muy vendidos, por cierto. Posiblemente, en muchos de los casos, los lectores o seguidores de tales productos desconocen su origen y desarrollo, que tiene en el escritor británico George Orwell, fallecido el 21 de enero de 1950, uno de sus principales impulsores.

Para recordar a Orwell esta microficción, ideada como si fuera un soliloquio autobiográfico en sus días finales.

There has been a lot of talk in recent years about dystopia and it has been depicted in novels, films and video games, which are very popular products, by the way. Possibly, in many cases, readers or followers of such products are unaware of its origin and development, which has in the British writer George Orwell, who died on January 21, 1950, one of its main promoters.

To remember Orwell this microfiction, conceived as if it were an autobiographical soliloquy in his final days.

Yo, que he sido un periodista empedernido, no puedo hacer ahora de mí mismo un reportaje. Dediqué gran parte de mi vida a indagar y mostrar las caras ocultas o ignoradas de las realidades más duras, incluso las vividas en carne propia. La tuberculosis que hoy acaba conmigo viene de esa etapa de obrero empobrecido, de marginal, de vagabundo, que me tocó vivir, y que luego lograra convertir en mi primer libro Sin blanca (dinero) en París y Londres.

Sí, sé que levanté más de una vez las armas, como en la Guerra Civil Española. Siempre lo hice en contra del opresor (aunque algunas veces este fuese suplantado por el supuesto oprimido). Sin embargo, mi arma fue siempre la crítica, sobre todo del poder. Mi apuesta por la justicia social, que se nutría de mis antecedentes familiares, me llevó a cometer errores y caer en parcialidades, que reconocí e intenté enmendar. Mas, mi afán fue la libertad, y esta se expresó como palabra filosa e imaginativa.

No sé si fue quijotesco mi empeño en denunciar el totalitarismo que se erguía simulando orden, progreso y bienestar, con rostro de izquierda o de derecha: el estalinismo variopinto de los comunismos, el fascismo y el nazismo… En algo contribuí a desnudarlo con mis novelas Rebelión en la granja y 1984, que creo siguen siendo leídas.

No obstante, el ”Gran Hermano” sigue suelto, cometiendo sus desmanes. Solo una aguda visión crítica puede mantenernos a salvo.

Yes, I know that I took up arms more than once, as in the Spanish Civil War. I always did it against the oppressor (even if sometimes the oppressor was supplanted by the supposed oppressed). However, my weapon was always criticism, especially of power. My commitment to social justice, which was nourished by my family background, led me to make mistakes and fall into biases, which I recognized and tried to amend. But my desire was freedom, and this was expressed as a sharp and imaginative word.

I don't know if it was quixotic my determination to denounce the totalitarianism that stood pretending to be order, progress and welfare, with a left-wing or right-wing face: the various forms of Stalinism of communism, fascism and Nazism... I contributed in some way to uncovering it with my novels Rebellion on the Farm and 1984, which I believe are still being read.

Nevertheless, "Big Brother " is still on the loose, committing his outrages. Only a sharp critical eye can keep us safe.
