Today, August 2nd, marks the 50th anniversary of the death of one of the most important founders of cinema: Fritz Lang, master of German Expressionism, an avant-garde movement that greatly contributed to the renewal of art in literature, painting, and film, primarily. Without attempting a full biography of the filmmaker, as several comprehensive ones already exist (see References), I will offer a few brief lines.

Fritz Lang was born in 1890 in Vienna. From childhood, he showed a love for art, especially painting; he studied architecture but did not complete his degree. After his long journey through several countries in Europe and Asia, he settled in Paris, where he began to take an interest in film, which, unlike painting, allowed him to depict a sequence of movements and actions.

In 1927, he made the film Metropolis, written by Thea von Harbou, his wife at the time. Metropolis is perhaps Lang's film with the greatest accumulation of expressionist themes and settings, mixed with other romantic and avant-garde features. It contains several thematic topics of an expressionist nature, especially those related to his social concerns; expressionism is also present in the dramatized nature of the mise-en-scène, in the actors' performances, in the architecture, and in the lighting.

He died in 1976, at the age of 86, in Los Angeles, United States.

My interest in this post is focused on highlighting the importance of his film Metropolis to cinema. And that is what I will now discuss.

It is considered a masterpiece of German Expressionist cinema but even more so, a milestone in the development of world cinema. Released on January 10, 1927, in Germany, it was one of the most expensive productions in the early days of cinema, but it turned out to be a financial failure. After several cuts and modifications due to censorship and economic considerations, it was re-released the same year.

As a film production, it is one of the major artistic works in the history of cinema. A large number of extras participated in it, countless feet of film were shot, and its production lasted nearly a year. Innovative techniques for the time were used, and it possesses a highly developed sense of fantasy. Its set design, featuring unusual landscapes, is a daring artistic endeavor that, together with the lighting effects, framing, and editing, creates an exceptional work.

Metropolis is a science fiction film (from the so-called "silent cinema") that depicts a futuristic urban dystopia. Let's look at its plot summary:

In 2026, there is a luxurious city called Metropolis, created and managed by Joh Fredesen. It—and those who enjoy it—exist thanks to a multitude of workers who labor in miserable conditions in a kind of underground world. One day, the son of its creator, Freder Fredesen, meets Maria, a young and beautiful worker who defends the workers, and falls in love with her. Following her, he discovers the conditions in which the workers live and tries to help them.

Fredersen Sr. goes to the scientist Rotwang, who gives Maria's appearance to the anthropomorphic robot of his invention, while the real Maria is taken prisoner. The robot Maria will manipulate the workers into inciting an uprising so that Fredersen can suppress it. Rotwang will use the automaton as an instrument of revenge against the president of Metropolis, his son, and the city itself.

Following the robot's calls, the workers rebel and destroy the "Heart Machine," the power source for all other machinery in Metropolis. The machine's destruction also floods the workers' underworld. In desperation, they capture the fake Maria, set her on fire, and discover she is a robot. Freder confronts Rotwang, who was pursuing Maria, and dies after falling from the roof. Maria and Freder meet Fredersen and Grot (leaders of the city and the workers), who reconcile, marking the beginning of a new society. The final motto will be "The heart must be the mediator between the brain and the hand," represented by Fredersen, the workers' leader, and Freder-Maria, respectively.

Critics have raised a major central theme in Metropolis: the profound duality of humankind, presented as the age-old struggle between Good and Evil, visually represented by the darkness and light so characteristic of expressionist cinema. But the film also highlights a diverse thematic spectrum: class divisions, religious fanaticism, the animation of the inorganic, the conflict between creator and creation, messianic redemption, the subjugation of man by the machine, the femme fatale, the end of the world, among others.

Revisiting Metropolis is not a task of cultural archaeology, but rather a way to appreciate how that magical world of cinema was built, eventually becoming what it is today. Its strengths are many: its power of fantasy; its contributions to the development of science fiction; its scenographic architecture, where different styles coexist—in the postmodern fashion that would prevail in the second half of the 20th century—(skyscrapers inspired by New York, a Gothic cathedral, a medieval-style building, idyllic gardens, and gloomy spaces like catacombs, a cabaret, etc.); its technical contributions to visual storytelling (the use of the subjective camera), photography, and editing; its incorporation of modern technological objects (the first significant cinematic robot); its dystopian premise; its foreshadowing of political upheavals (National Socialism) and futuristic vision, and so on.

Its contemporary influences can be seen in films such as Blade Runner, Star Wars, Dark City, The Matrix, and I, Robot, among others.
