Plagiarism: A Natural Web2 Instinct?

20220722_020131_0000.png

I saw an interesting post by @finguru which talks about plagiarism and the truth is that we'd never get rid of plagiarism as long as centralized web2.0 platforms still exist. Why is this? Originally it was hard for you to see the abhorrence of plagiarism on social media.

Most of the people we're trying to onboard are from one traditional media to another, all their lives online, they're used to reposting replying, or reacting "Haha" to someone else's content they can refurbish these contents and make it theirs and the cycle keeps going.

I don't know how Facebook, Twitter or Instagram's monetization process is, but I felt that because the regular user wasn't there to monetize their content.

The Money Intent

Some of these people are there to educate themselves, entertain, or create online opportunities to monetize their real-time or online hustles. So this media doesn't originally monetize people but then, it gives people the opportunity of a diverse audience which creates money-making opportunities.

So because traditional media does not monetize ordinary users, it was difficult to put plagiarism checks in place because nothing was really at stake. Plagiarism becomes an issue when there's something at stake.

The truth is, most people don't even know how to create content on traditional media because it wasn't really about content, it was more about people coming to establish different agendas Facebook is broad, the fact that it allowed heterogeneity means that there aren't many limits to what people could do and because of this, it was easier to be on Facebook and not understand the core of content creating because nothing was at stake.

The "Hive" Tradition

But here on Hive, plagiarism check is strict because there's a reward pool, everyone is expected to "earn" this reward pool. Because the aim of Hive is a little bit boisterous, it makes it difficult for people to do whatever they like.

This is because we have people who are actual investors and stakeholders, their direct opinion and beliefs are directly reflected in the way the reward pool is distributed and this is why things like plagiarism aren't given a pass.

Many would say this feels monotonous, but one of the reasons why plagiarism rules will never stand is because the regular Hive user has the opportunity to monetize their content while this isn't the same for a regular Facebook user.

The "Web2.0" Pattern

So, we will always treat the issue of plagiarism because a lot of people who we're onboarding are and will still be web2 minded. So these people would originally find it difficult because they need to be unique and creative to be here.

Some of the people who cannot cope with this would say Facebook is better because it doesn't require much to create content, but we all know that they go back to Facebook because they're disappointed that their regular style of plagiarism wouldn't work here.

Now, I believe creating apps that can mirror web2 pattern of content creating can help with this aspect of retention, I cannot tell. But why plagiarism will always be a "thing" is because there's a pool that the distribution is tied to the stakes of actual people.

Burned & The Allegations Of Centralization

We've seen people who repost content and get flagged for plagiarism, but they get all angry and call the system "centralized" when all they should understand is that what is at stake makes the rules of content creating to be quite challenging. At the end of the day, we all know that it isn't morally right to earn money for the intellectual property of others whether it's digital or physical.

I know big TikTok users who are making money off the content of legit creators on Facebook but no one is pointing fingers as to why this is so.

So I guess plagiarism is just a natural web2 instinct people are used to stealing the intellectual properties of others and they try to demean this as something that's okay.

Hive will continue to get the sticks when it comes to plagiarism. Many people will continue to see nothing wrong with plagiarism and this will be because it's done on other web2 platforms, they just fail to understand that "the money" and the human factor will always make a big difference.

And thats where the power of a true community comes in. A community is not all about increasing followers and viewers but proper and meaningful interactions. A hive seeks to get that while on the other ends its all about eyeball no,after how they find themselves on you platform. An element that one has to get to the bottom of in the hive ecosystem is the actual people at every step of the way setting up how decentralisation functions

Well, to be honest we need a systematic way to grow without compromising a lot and this includes handling plagiarism. It's a dominant thing and it's often used against Hive and how it's being handled here.

When I share Hive with friends, one of the questions I ask them is are you on Facebook or Instagram because if you are, you stand a chance of surviving on Hive because it is about posting, I don't even use the word "create content" because it sound heavy to the lol

Come Hive account is created and this pumped up friends vanishes and Hive account sitting dormant.
It just goes to tell how these folks are used to recycling posts on web 2 platforms and when they get to Hive that thinking ability is put to test, which we see with some staying and some vanishing.

You've said it all, being used to recycling contents is the way of web2 and this is why people from Facebook and Instagram needs to be intentional when it comes to a place like Hive. Because monetization is involved the stakeholders here would not have plagiarism. It's the whole issue with recycling and plagiarism.

Thanks for the shoutout mate. On Web2, if a big creator is found to be a proven plagiarist, the platform would definitely ban them for copyright violation.

On Web3 platforms like Hive, everyone earns income so everyone is being watched. We cannot tolerate abuse of any kind by anyone, no matter how big or small following they have. Everyone is on a level playing field. And that's why we have better rewards for good behavior. It also keeps our platform clean while FB and Twitter are plagued with spam and fake accounts.

Facebook and Instagram are at the tip of web2 because they're the most reckoned with platforms. So many of these theft of contents are barely noticed because these traditional media are all about the numbers and most people guilty of this don't even think it's wrong.
Thanks for that post.

If a platform like Hive would allow to earn money by doing plagiarism, it would be like usurping the right of original content creators. The rewards that should be given to them would go to the plagiarised content. In this way, people who can add real value to the system would go away or simply won't put as much effort as they would in a plagiarism free environment.

Plagiarism is a theft. It should be understood

Well Hive wouldn't let it. I think that so many people are still etched to the mentality of recycling contents on web2 so it's always difficult to explain to them that recycling and plagiarism is wrong especially with monetization in question or view.

And looking at the same thing plastered on everyone's wall on web2 isn't monotonous???

Now, I believe creating apps that can mirror web2 pattern of content creating can help with this aspect of retention, I cannot tell.

If you mean creating short form, yes. But there will need to be a way to keep it separate from the normal posts. Also it will need to become viewed as having value, I think. The latter may just be the most difficult challenge.

They know, it's a baseless argument they put on to forestall relevance, web3 is still trying to break through and somehow we're always Left with trying to convince these guys that what web3 offers is more.

This is absolutely true. I think Leofinance is trying to achieve this with projectblank although it's still a work in progress

But isn't Projectblank only for finance? We need something for people who just want to post things like a quick actifit post, or their culinary masterpiece :(

Nice said man, sometimes I think about the same thing for social media also why they do not do a plagiarism check and I see that hive is really a different entity which a lot of stakeholders have strive to make become what it is today.. but truth been told the plagiarism check keeps one inform and makes one able to think out wide to create a lot. Not even on hive here but in other aspect of life too..

I think Facebook is all about the numbers and that's why they might not even have plagiarism check. Recycling feels bliss and monotonous, but since people are having fun and meeting the needs as to how they're there then they're fine.

Well that's true and that is why it can never be like hive at all

If Hive would be as big as tik tok or Facebook we would probably have the same amount of plagiarism. We're a smaller community easier to keep that under control.

Plagiarism is everywhere on web2 which is something that can't be put under control but I'm happy that hive has won the fight over the years and still winning

Plagiarism is bound to happen and I think it's more likely to happen on Web3 as opposed to Web2 because they stand to earn financially from it. Of course, we can flag them and try to stop them as much as possible though. It will likely be a thankless job though but it's a necessary thing for the community.

".....But here on Hive, plagiarism check is strict because there's a reward pool, everyone is expected to "earn" this reward pool".. I love this about Hive. It fosters originality

I agree with @jfang003. Plagiarism is more likely to happen on Web3 where there is a financial incentive. That's why Web3 platforms need to be diligent in combating it, and that means individual users.

Don't upvote plagiarized posts. Downvote them. Don't comment on them. Expose them. If we work together, we can kill plagiarism.
